Codes have changed since this video was made. You have to tie the railing posts into the rest of the deck more securely. I love the new method since I never really trusted the way the posts were connected on old decks.

Given enough time I knew somebody out there would try and change some thing that has worked just fine for the last 200 years. And then just like he says it’s highly engineered just like the price

Used these on my deck, awesome stuff.

Do you have to use three? As far as aesthetics go three staggered screw bolts is kind-of an eye sore...

We recommend following the manufacturer's guidelines for this application. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

For the price of 6 of these I can buy 15 carriage bolts with washers and nuts. And can use only 2 carriage bolts vs 3 of these per post. These make no sense to me since drilling and using carriage bolts is just as fast.

That looks like a good connection from the post to rim but what about the connection of rim to joist?
@RVEVANSCO6 жыл бұрын
Brian, thank you for your question. The connection typically is nails from outer rims/band boards to joists with joist hangers on the inside. If you'd like more information, please feel free to contact us 800.252.5894 or via email at sales@rvevans.com.

OK! Not exactly what I was getting at. My point is what good is it to have a positive connection from the post to the rim when the rim is only nailed to the joist? Youi need a positive connection from post to joist.

I recommend you look online for the "Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide", by the American Wood Council. (The latest edition was just released and is based on the 2015 IRC.) It has suggestions for the connections you're asking about.

As they always say, that's a good question. Mike Guertin address it in www.deckmagazine.com/videos/railing-post-connections-with-mike-guertin_o?Video&PDB_122518%20(1)&he=91f0f7a64bdd06dc7678746cdd381fe0f1a00d94. The link doesn't always work, but try Googling "Guertin, post connections" And, Google "deck tension ties" and "DTT" Tension ties are intended to tie the deck to the house, but also work to lock rim joists in place to resist guardrail post forces.

Is this ok to use or due to building codes, may no longer be viable?

The fact you have to explain this bolt means people are getting dumber by the minute
