I think we can all agree on the fact that wingfoiling is here to stay, but
I feel the need
the need for speed!
In this video I wanna see if that wing thing is only fun or if it can be fast too.
Normally I'm happy just gliding, jibing, tacking, jumping around at speeds ranging from 15-25 km/hr.
It's very relaxing and still fun.
This time I'm gonna sqeeze the maximum out of my wing gear trying to beat my personal best speed winging.
To do this I'm gonna mount tiny wings on my F4 aluminium foil and see if that will do the job.
Wanna see how that went down???
Just check out the video and don't forget to let me know what you think.
See you on the water!!!

Great to see the F4 foils adapting well to windwinging without great expense... I'll be testing this setup out in 2024 too!

Hi Berowne, that's also one of the things I really like about F4. with 2 fuselages you can windfoil and wingfoil while interchanging the mast and wings. You'll might need an extra adapter e.g. tuttle to plate mount which they sell separately. I use all my windfoil wings for wingfoiling as well. Saves you quite a bit of money. Let me know how it went down for you. See you on the water.

Hi SurfingMarc, Thank you! Just take it step by step and remember, control is the basis for speed. So the first thing you want to do is find the right setup concerning front-/backwing/shims/rake and foil position. Just have fun and always try to figure out how to make your foil more comfortable, then speed will come automatically. Don't hesitate and just ask if you have the feeling you get stuck with something. See you on the water!

Great to see you trying new things all the time. Great attitude. 45.6kmh is really fast! I'm doing deep downwind runs on ice (with old fashioned, straight, ski's and a 4.5m2 Ensys wing) but always use a harness to hold the power and to be able to go for a long time. Why aren't you using one yet? I just used some old harness lines (strung two together for length) and mainly use it to relieve my front arm. This also results in a different position from what wing-foilers have: My front arm is really straight. Perhaps not good at all, but my max speed is quite a but higher than is possible on water :P

Hi Fons, Thanks!!!! On ice it will absolutely be very fast!!!! Really cool (and cold) too! I do have a harness for wingfoiling but prefer not to use it. I'm not a full power winger all the time and also like to hold my wing just by the tips of my fingers and just glide smoothly over the water so I don't really need it. I did use it for the "RoundTexel" and it's definitively great for those long distance races. With a harness you might just be able to squeeze an extra knot or 2 out of your speed runs that true. See you on the water!!!

Nice video, any particular tips on how to build maximum speed - position etc ?
@Windsurfcoach

Hi Matt, Thank you! For me speed is all about control. This means I want my foil setup in such a way that it's not hard to keep it in the water and that it has no tendency to continuously dive at high speeds. You can achieve this in 2 ways. 1. adjust your foil in the tracks. 2. use shims (There is a video about shims on my channel and it works the same for both windfoil as for winging.) Depending on the foil you have you probably want to do both. In my opinion the 2-nd methode is really important as well especially if you don't have a foil which is made for high speeds. You might just want to adjust the rake of your foil mast if the foil doesn't match the board so that the board will have the least amount of drag in case of touch down. Your position on the board should be with your front foot at the front strap position as that's the way your board will stick the least when it accidentally touches the water at high speed (The scoop/rocker line of your board should be designed that way.) I hope this will help you out to get you going. Be careful and have fun. See you on the water!

I'm sure you could squeeze even higher speed out of it. Bend your legs a little more, sit lower and use a harnas . Nice vid btw

Well done, to beat your 45kmph , use a smaller inflatable wing in a bit more wind for less drag and once going well on a reach turn down wind to about 15 to 30 degrees off directly down wind to get the maximum apparent wind , with land yachts its about 20 deg off directly down wind .

Coming from a windsurfing slalom gear do you think you can have still fun with the wing? I can tell from the videos that winging is much slower than windsurfing, isn't it?
@Windsurfcoach
@Windsurfcoach 9 ай бұрын
Hi emotionseeker, true, wingfoiling is slower than windsurfing at this moment for me. But...... It feels fast. It works in light and patchy winds. It is very efficient. It is chill. It is a very small and light package. It is simple and quick to rig. It is loads of fun. So as a windsurfer you should definitively give it a go! Will it replace windsurfing? No, not for me but it will give me more time and opportunities to go out on the water and have fun. See you on the water!!!

The foil you are using is whistling a lot. What if you would wet sand it with very fine sanding paper. Perhaps also the edges of the foil. Other than that trying out a shim under the stabilizer in order to trim the foil might result in an even higher speed. Last thing, using a larger wing in order to be overpowered and get the most out of the wing
@Windsurfcoach
@Windsurfcoach 10 ай бұрын
Hi Machiel, you're absolutely right about the sanding part and I know what part causes the whistling. There is some damage on the trailing edge of the mast, but as it's an aluminum mast so I rather not sand it but should definitively do it if I would want to go faster. Normally I don't go that fast so it doesn't bother me. Also about the shim you're right. I was using a shim to get the most out of it and I could tweak it even a bit further. Bigger wing means more power so that would absolutely give me some extra potential for speed, but this time I preferred control over power. Thanks for the input and.. See you on the water!!!

Interesting that you use an overhand grip for your front hand. I thought that an underhand grip would give you the potential for more power in the limit and, in any case, would be more natural given that you (presumably) come from a windsurfing background. At least, underhand front is much more comfortable for me. I hate overhand so much that I have to switch grip from underhand to overhand and then back again when entering and exiting tacks.
@Windsurfcoach
@Windsurfcoach 5 ай бұрын
Hi Kshred, Overhand grip for the front hand for me is just a safety feature. When you crash with the wing upside down in the water your hand is more likely to get stuck in the handle using the underhand grip. I know of people who broke their wrists that way. Using the overhand grip your hand will just slide of the handle/boom in that situation. So yes, you are right. For me the front underhand grip feels more natural and powerful but I don't use it for that reason. Stay safe and ... See you on the water!!

@@Windsurfcoach Interesting. That consideration would never have occurred to me. Since I am no where near approaching the speeds you are going, I guess I don't have to be too concerned. A somewhat similar comment was made to me by another wouldbe speedster. He said that he wears a calf leash instead of a waist leash to the board under the theory that it will drag the board/foil down rather than lift it up in a high speed crash.

What is keeping you guys from not using a board leach? I haven’t used a board leach for the past months and I prefer it alot definitely if i am on a lake where there are no waves to push the board away. And if you lose it you can body drag to it with the wing.
