This is a great video and explanation! One think I would add is that wetsuits and gloves can impact this decision greatly. We are up north in Washington State and wear 5/4s and gloves throughout the fall and winter which greatly increase the forearm exhaustion (especially if you are using non pre-curved gloves). I totally agree that in boardshorts it feels like you can ride all day but there are plenty of days in the winter where I would have a hard time riding for over 30 min without a harness. Even using a simple wing hook on a waist leash is enough to give your arms a break!

When I started windsurfing in 1973 in the East Bay, there were no harnesses. My forearms looked like Popeyes arms after an hour of sailing. There were NO storm sails. I would give ANYTHING to have windsurfed with a harness and a storm sail, but when the harnesses came out we all scratched our heads. What is that? Now? Give me a harness!!! 🙂 What YOU do is off the charts. Having my experience, I can't believe the amazing talent you have.

Such a comprehensive advice, thanks, Robbie. Very reasonable way of thinking about every level being a pro yourself. Love you boards and enjoy my Naish every time on the water. Surfy look gives it and extra edge on my lake :)

Excellent advice! After almost 4 years of winging I've never used a harness but after watching this I'm definitely at least going to try it out and see how it feels especially going hard upwind.

Excellent!! I pretty much live in my harness - wing belt - now, I’d walk a mile if I forgot it on a good day. 🤙

Love using the harness on the wing! Essential to get the hook up high around the bottom of your sternum. I have tried lots of different set ups and higher up is the most balanced! I have a video on a really useful harness line with a magnetic quick release on my channel too

Robby, you are legeng, telling people to riding carefully at the end of topic harnessline, but doing masive jump at hookipa last 10 second of this edit 😂🤙

Excellent advice, thank you! Clearly lays out when a harness is a good idea, plus the cons. For me I like to ride quick but use a small wing and small foil so not in ‘race power’ mode. So I’ll stick to the simplicity of no harness and get a mild arm workout too hehehe

I use a "worker's" belt from Home Depot. Without cushion. And it is ok. I can't imagine who would need a windsurfing harness with steel hook. It is overkill and one can dent a board with it. A foldable plastic hook works the best. So the "toy harness" is perfect.

Wind foiling can be the answer to the catapult issue. I'm just freeride wind foiling but i don't hook in to harness line from 6.4 m2 or smaller. I hook in while board is on water then unhook at lift off if i hardly needed to pump or unhook before pumping to get on foil. So little pressure in sail that it doesn't take much effort to go unhooked.

Good advice. I just used one the other day and was blown how great the angle of attack was with my 8m. I found if Infelt like I was getting close to falling I could disengage even when I was falling, but definitely needed to be aware.

Surprised you use an ankle leash. May be an old surfer's habit... I hate having the leash crowd the board and dragging behind the board... Love you Robby! We met so long ago in Tenerife, I was a young star stuck french windsurfer and you were super cool with me!

I have been getting up on my board from my stomach to my knees then up to my feet. My windsurfing harness is too big to do that technique. How do you get up to your feet. That part wasn’t in the video.

Any clue what what's meant by lightwind? How much windspeed is necessary to get on foil with 3.5? PS: on my lake I barely get over 10kn😢

Hey there is another Time where you may like the Harness even without to much Power that you guys in Hawai do not experience 😂. It is wintertime riding with gloves. You can extend your cold sessions quite a bit with a harness.
