I laugh at all who boast on how fast they can through. First speed doesn't mean your good! Doing it a 100% efficient does. Pointers for the guy in the video would be to toss the plastic down"stream"(toward the side of the aisle he has already worked cutting all the cases at once is easier and a less ackward pose (doesn't violate basic knife safety cut away from yourself not against your chest.) He also doesn't face/block/front while he stocks, nor is his product spotted/arranged for strategic advantage. If he worked a stack at a time he would also increase his efficiency. He might work hard, but he could easily work smarter. Apply knowledge and you generate efficiency.

The father and daughter who were both maintenance would sit their ass on the scrubber all night and drive around, their feet not even touching the ground for hours on end while I sweated my ass off ninja'ing through the boxes like the guy in this vid. And when I'd work really hard like this guy in the vid did, they'd come by and start bitching about some plastic on the floor or something. Most of the time they wouldn't even pick it up they'd drive on over on their mighty scrubber stead and point at the plastic on the floor to me like I'm some dog.. Now they're still maintenance though, and I work a Transactional job selling products for Microsoft, fuck Walmart :)

You can shave a little off your time if you cut the stack all together before you peel the plastic off. What you'd do is to run vertically along each of the three sides, doing quick slits along the way. You may be more comfortable the way you're ripping them now after a cross-section slice, but it can cause more fumbling in the long run. Critique: all speed, no technique --- even though you're stocking whole cases, the boxes are crooked and all of that. If you put them up straight the first time, that's less time you have to waste when you pull the rest of everything forward.

Please do yourself a favour, work slow and dont even worry about it, since back injuries will haunt you for the rest of your life. All the best
@billgould526910 жыл бұрын
I worked overnight stock for almost 20 years, and I currently teach it. At first glance this young man seems to be amazing. But lets break down the stocking procedures he is using. #1 he is not using a table/cart to place his items on to prevent a back injury, #2 he is quick but he is also case stocking and it is less presentable than regular stocking. #3 His pieces are spotted fairly well but they could be closer to the shelves location to save time. #4 he is not putting the pieces on the shelf the proper way (overhangs and not straight etc...) #5 his trash is all over the floor and he could be stocking so much neater and less of a customer hazard ( granted I worked messy as well, but we were closed over night, there were no customers in the store. When i stocked while we were opened I worked neater and had a box under my table to collect plastic. #6 he isn't blocking and leveling as he is gong ( he may be doing it later) #7 doubtful you an keep this pace up for a full 8 hours every night.. some days I needed to go this fast other nights it was slower. But I always worked smart. Overall I give him a B grade and I would hire him, but he would need safety training.

@billgould52699 жыл бұрын
Also he might be the type who presents at the end of his shift. Many stockers will block and level during the last 1-2 hours of their shift. the danger here is that if someone is behind and you are asked to help them finish, your presentation wont get done at all and if the person you are helping blocked as they went, they will be nearly finished and you will not be.

If you do well in a good store, it does get recognized; and you will not only feel accomplished, but you will be considered for promotions or relocations --- or whatever the more capable in your location do. Also, if you do happen to work part time, and it's not a union, then you'll be considered for more hours and be respected by co-workers, or be up for full-time if the store you're at recognizes that providing for good workers ensures good work to be done.

the only complicated part is when the shelves aren’t empty and you can’t set the case down, like pre existing cases are half full and you have to condense to 1 to put another out. Then its cans getting stuck on each other or following over as you slide 1 case on top of another. But yes this typically is faster than individual stocking. This is for stores that do big business in their area and have tons of cases and customers don’t car to grab a can off the shelfp

The way I was taught is that you face as you go, at least your product. That way come morning, you don't struggle when you face the Isle on the morning. I give him the speed, but he needs to work on his technique. I've worked overnight for 4 years, and I recently came back to the day 8 months ago, I miss the night shift. I've worked for Kroger, HEB and currently at Fiesta. I learned each store has different rules on this matter when it comes to trash and all of that.

@1nstyZ28: try using both hands and grabbing two at once, making a triangular pivot with the last joints of your fingers with the pointer at the intersection at the front of the two cans, and the two other fingers spread at the back (the ring finger or pinky, and the thumb) to lock them in your hand. In this way, you can also develop strength to make your hands very flat vertically while still holding the cans upright, and being that they're oriented to the tips of your fingers, you can get them in quick and still have enough room to be able to flawlessly stock them consistently at a rapid pace without slowing down. With practice, you can get the 8oz tomato paste cans up four in each hand at a time, for a total of 8 per movement; and although maybe slightly slower, still faster in the long run. Even if you started out only doing one in each hand at the same time, instead of one at a time in only one hand, and you don't do it HALF THE SPEED, then you will still have a speed increase. It goes up exponentially with skill. It's like levels in an RPG game. Also, having the case already laid facing the shelf straight before doing this with the direction that has 4 rows parallel to the shelf, when you go to pick up the four in a case at a time, spin them forward before you pick them up, as it's easier to do for the cans like that in the case. For the cat cans, it's easier to do a combination of in the case and in your hand, depending on how they look. Using your judgement, you'll be able to stock a case of cat cans in solid columns two to four cases per minute. The most I did in the pet aisle was 215 cases in 1 hour and 15 minutes, but some were bags. The most in the soup (and such) aisle during their "Great American Can Sale" was 550 cases in about five and a half hours, in each pulling the aisle forward If you have trouble, notice the distinguishing marks, such as UPCs where they are in relation to the front. Since I moved to Canada, I've relied on that, since almost everything where I'm at has a French and an English side, and it's difficult sometimes to tell the difference on first glance going top speed. If you double them up, and you usually fill the shelves pretty full, my advice would be, using experienced and sound judgement, to fill the bottom row first, leaving the last cans to double up towards the front. In this way, the facings are always lined up straight (unless someone during the day comes and shoves things, making them look like a bunch of molecules hanging around). You won't have to worry about them always being straight however if it's always full and you always stock them in rows - they will self-lock. If you do these things, and practice them well, I promise that you can at least double your speed. The last thing is concentration - if you have other things floating in your mind that you're thinking of, it'll cause you to have less concentration on what you're doing, even if it doesn't seem like it. The perception of time is relative to what you're concentrating on doing, you see? You'll know that you've mastered it when you keep doing something like 400 to 500 cases a night consistently, and keep saying to yourself at the end of the night, "but it seems like I just got here five minutes ago..."
