If I’m a manager looking for a Data Analyst and I see someone has a certificate from a course that was self-paced, in my mind that’s almost stronger than instructor-led, because they had to have the initiative and discipline to keep going back, stick with the course, and finish out on their own.

This was an extremely helpful video, though I have a question from the position of someone just starting their journey into learning data analytics, I see videos outlining what the day to day of the job is, and how to work on technical skills etc. but it feels so overwhelming looking at it from the beginning of the climb. Did you feel the same way when you first started? I currently work as a labratory technician in CMT so its not necessarily a relivent field, I plan on following along Alex the analyst's course and completing the google analytics certificate, but im just wondering if you also felt overwhelmed when you started, or if maybe a lack of confidence is getting the better of me.

As a former language professional I would very much like to get into machine learning but more specifically for NLP, or anything related to automatic translation or so, would you say that it is relevant to start off as a data analyst? I have heard some advice that data analyst is a good gateway to NLP jobs if you don't have a degree in this specific field. Also, do you recommend certificates over starting off a new bachelor? Keeping in mind that a bachelor part time would take 6 years to complete, I imagine the certifications are more worthy?

Don't be afraid to accept roles adjacent to data analytics. I got hired as a SQL developer because of my abilities with SQL, and I got a promotion when I switched to my company's analytics team. Working in the SQL developer role helped me tremendously in understanding the kind of data I would be working with as a data analyst and it expanded my SQL skills significantly. I love the path I took to get where I am.

Thanks for the vid. I'm in my mid 30's and am looking to either enhance my current career (sales) with Data Analysis or jump into a new Data Analysis career altogether. Is sales + data analysis a good combo? Would I be able to leverage my experience in sales (account executive and SDR roles) to land a good position relatively quickly? I'd be starting from scratch, with basically zero knowledge of data analysis or any programming knowledge, along with zero knowledge/experience with tableu, sql, etc.

To be completely honest, it'll be very hard to get a data analyst position quickly given you're starting from scratch. That said, if you're willing to put in the time and effort, it is certainly possible to transition into a DA role.

Yeah for sure. Getting 2nd hand is a good idea. I'm running my YT channel, editing videos etc on a 2nd hand base M1 Macbook Pro 14. Maybe look into M1 or M2 Macbook Airs - a bit newer and the Apple chips are really good.

Quick question when you say follow a guide or copy how does that show that you can use the software? I took a class where I had a project to do with tableau and never studied or anything and just followed a KZbin video and got a 100/100. Isn’t that cheating?

If you can re-create something it at least shows that you have the technical understanding to do it. Whether you can actually apply the concepts to real-life problems on your own, that's another question that you'll get tested on during interviews for sure.
