This was actually super fascinating as a DX experiment. Would be interesting to see more of these types of experiments. Would also love to see more Supabase content! Or like a Supabase vs Planetscale

Planning to do a whole video on Supabase. It's really nice 😁

Interesting video. Would love more DB stuff! I don't necessarily agree that speed = good DX though. Speed could be a factor of good DX, so long as its not at the cost of other things. I think a clear UI which is easy to navigate makes a good DX for this kind of thing. Setting up a database correctly could be fairly intensive - restricting access, putting limits on things, creating read/write users etc. There is also the time it takes to plug into that database on my frontend/api/backend. I don't really care about which of those is fastest - I would only care about which of those is most easy to find and carry out and maintain. Firebase is a good example of this - its very quick to set up but I find a lot of the "extra" stuff on firebase very cumbersome, slow and unintuitive. Digital Ocean is the opposite, setting up is a bit slower, but navigating the UI is fantastic. Information is displayed clearly like RAM/CPU etc. Finding things in the future is very straightforward. Price is also factors into DX imo. Saying "im probably going to get billed $100 for this" because you have no idea how much the price is or how the pricing works is a sign of a bad DX imo.

As mentioned, it's just one factor :) You make some good points here for other factors to consider!

I'd like to see them compared in price and how easy they are to request data
@leerob3 жыл бұрын
That's a great point! A price comparison against this would be really helpful. Especially for those considering free tiers.

Which one would you recommend for nextJS? Something that can scale up and can handle the most common features of every web app like authentication, complex CRUD, etc.?
@HappySingh-yt6vm3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have the same question
@nosnart94533 жыл бұрын
supabase 😊
@leerob3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, all of these would be able to scale and handle auth and CRUD for a Next.js app! The larger question is where you're hosting your Next.js app, as serverless vs. managing your own servers changes the answer. If you're using serverless (like Vercel) for your Next.js app, here are some suggestions: For PostgreSQL: Supabase For SQL: PlanetScale For NoSQL: Firebase For Redis: Upstash Fauna is hard to categorize, but also works well!

Hey leerob. Thanks for the video. Please, are there ways to get browsers session or cookies inside of a server component? I mean getserversideprops?

I am using railway, I find I very easy to setup and work with. With Prisma. Now I am exploring supabase because of the built-in authentication and storage. Both using nextjs of course. Maybe you can recommend the stack for each popular services for certain apps?
