Finding a main is super important. I wholeheartedly suggest writing down everything you like about the characters you're playing, writing a list of chars from Fox to Falcon (lower if you want, no disrespect) next to it and crossing off every one who doesn't fit that criteria. It really helped me go from alternating Peach and Falcon to settling on Marth. It hurts to cut a character you have an emotional attachment to, but if you're serious about improvement, you've got to focus.

Damn, choosing one character to main is gonna be a real pain. I'm having trouble deciding that for both Melee and Sm4sh, but it feels weirdly tougher in Melee to choose.
@brimstone9208 жыл бұрын
I would recommend that if possible choose a different character for Sm4sh and Melee. I know for some people, me included, it feels very jarring to go from Melee with one character and then trying them in Sm4sh and it being completely different. It can mess with your consistency with both iterations of your character (this specific reason is actually why Mew2King is a Cloud main on Sm4sh instead of Sheik, the differences messed with him too much).
@matthewleclair31898 жыл бұрын
Brimstone Yeah, that was something that I recently had to consider. Ever since I was a kid, I always played Marth so despite the fact that I could still play him somewhat competently in either game, the constant transition always screwed me up. I'm thinking I'll stick with Marth in Melee but I also have my eyes on Fox and C. Falcon as I've been having a lot of fun with them and playing/watching them is always a blast. Sm4sh on the other hand, I'm unsure of. I like a great deal of characters but none stand out that badly to me asides from ZSS and Sheik.

If you still want to play multiple characters I recommend doing this: Play one character and only that character for a week Switch to another one and play for a week Repeat. If there is one character in the group that you want to make your "*main* main" never use any character in the training room other than that character. I've got some progress so far with this tactic.

How I like to think of losing sets: I tell myself that I lost a set not because I was bad, but because my opponent was really good; they were better than me. In this mindset I both credit the other player for being more skilled than I am and complimenting the work they've put into the game, and I'm also not putting myself down for losing. With this mindset I'm not discrediting my own skill in the game while also giving credit to my opponent for a well played game.

You should consider writing a Marth versus floaty guide from the perspective of the floaty. Specifically, understanding how to DI Marths aerials and throws, and understanding what marths counterplay to those DIs are. Puff might be the easiest to discuss this in depth if you want to pick one specific character to discuss it with.

I find it so difficult to practice punish game alone. I main fox and it seems like even with the 20XX hack pack, people never DI like the CPU's do so I never get any valuable practice from them. On top of that I've always struggled with tech chasing and I have no idea how to practice it outside of reacting and grabbing, how do I practice getting tech reads on people? Does anyone have any tips on how to practice fox punish game?
@SSBMTutorials8 жыл бұрын
Ok here's what I've been doing for the past 2 weeks. Keep in mind I am not proficient with this yet but 2 weeks has shown me lots of improvement: - make sure it's version 3.02, put a cpu fox in the player 2 slot (lvl 1), go to battlefield, with 99 stocks and infinite time - upthrow the fox. if he lands on a platform, react to the tech roll with upair. once in awhile just guess tech in place and cover it on no reaction. if he doesn't, chaingrab him until he does. If he DI's the upair far off the platform and you don't land on top of it, upsmash. if he doesn't, regrab on top of the side platform. Continue cg until he DI's to top platform - if you grab him near a ledge, or near a platform ledge and he DI's off the stage, use fsmash (you can't be really close to the ledge or fsmash will miss) - if he is above 45%-ish, use fullhop falling upair on tech in place, and if he tech rolls, dash and JC grab him. You should be able to hit the L-cancel whether it hits the fox or not and it's a 1-frame window for getting the grab in time if they tech roll - after upairs you can continue doing single-hit falling upair on them or just bair off the stage. when they up B, armada shine them every time then do it on yoshis, and dreamland, and against falco, and then falcon, etc etc. for tech chasing on the ground, if they tech in place use shine, otherwise run JC grab vs others practice getting upthrow upair at every percent. Freeze their percents at 0% or at kill percent (depending on character). this is just MY way of doing it, there are plenty of other ways and you can develop your own as well. I also may have different options for certain things, for example Ice will sometimes tech chase with bair at low percents if he doesn't think he can get the upair, or maybe I move differently in order to tech chase the upair, maybe I should wavedash down on the platform above 40 rather than doing falling upair, theres plenty of other things to practice. this is honestly just one tiny part of the game, there are tons of other things to practice, im sure you can think of some yourself unless you believe you are perfect at everything
@morganlak43378 жыл бұрын
Thanks this helps a lot. I think my problem with tech chasing has been that I didn't have a good plan for punish, I wasn't sure how to make one, and I dont believe in my ability to react enough to rely on it and actually hit reaction tech chases. I can probably react more than I give myself credit for and I'll just have to grind out specifically reacting on the platform with uair. I also need to do a better job of recognizing situations where they'll hit the ground and getting ready to react with grab or usmash. Right now I'm lazy and i dont even try to react. Do you have any tips on picking up on people's tech roll habits?

Which 20xx version should we use to grind out our punish game? The newest or 3.02?
@liftingforlife18 жыл бұрын
3.02 for the majority of practice. If you want specific DI (like behind di on upthrows) or specific tech options then use 4.05.
@chadshowdown93828 жыл бұрын
Why 3.02 for the majority? Is there a difference in how the ai di's in 3.02 vs 4.05?
@liftingforlife18 жыл бұрын
3.02 has shine wake up and jump out of hitstun. When 4.05 just has color overlays, it can be sometimes hard to tell if he ever came out of hitstun for a frame or two. With shine, there is no questioning.

edit: so this is seen before the fold, in general i agree with everything he's saying. I'm just nitpicking. m2k played multiple at first, though his marth was really good he was a fox main for quite a bit of time. he didn't stick (as evident by his name) but he got better relatively slowly and is a special case for alot of things. PPMD started off as a doc, then switched to falco marth for a while, and got good as a double main, but once again, this is a different story since his case was unique and he learned the game very differently from a lot of people. While I don't disagree with your point solo maining helps you get good easier, and faster for most people, to cite the gods when yes, a majority of them did start off solo main, the fact remains 2 of them didn't get god solo maining.. and that's a decent percentage for it to not be as useful a thing to point at in my opinion. I want to reiterate- I agree with captain faceroll, just not his evidence as to why.
@SSBMTutorials8 жыл бұрын
I don't believe that is true. M2K played only Fox before becoming Top 8 at the old MLG circuits and PPMD played only Falco. You can look back at the footage, they rarely played Marth/Doc in tournament while reaching these points.
@SSBMTutorials8 жыл бұрын
I don't believe this is true actually, M2K became Top 8 in the MLG circuit without playing Marth in tournament. You can even look at old footage, I don't remember anything where PPMD used doc in tournament while rising to the top (also he started with Mario, not Doc). In fact he says he dropped Marth/Mario before he became one of the Top6

Is this something I just need to grind out? So how does one deal with match-ups that are grossly one sided like Pika vs. ICs? Do I have no choice but to choose another character, or do I stick with Pikachu and just grind the match out until I can figure a way to beat it.
@SSBMTutorials8 жыл бұрын
So, at the absolute worst you know you can be at least as good as Axe is at the matchup (but obviously everyone can improve and find out new ways to deal with things, so you can do even better than that eventually). Axe probably wouldn't lose to any ICs not ranked Top 100, so you can at least do that. Once you get to that level, you can decide for yourself. Practicing bad matchups is actually very helpful for overall skill

My problem is that whenever I start trying to stick to just one character, I start doing worse with that one and start doing better with the rest of the cast. My main game is Project M, and as someone who loves learning to play new characters and finding their unique tricks and abilities, I've found myself able to play a majority of the cast at a tournament level. I've even won tournament sets with bowser, the worst character in the game! But my love for diversity is another reason why it's hard for me to stick to a single character: because I get bored of doing the same thing over and over when there are so many other cool things out there. But back to my main point, when I focus on one character to main, usually Lucario, I end up underperforming with it in tournaments, and when I bust out secondaries they end up doing serious damage. This isn't always 100% true, but it is a reoccurring pattern

Bowser being the worst character in the game in Project M has a lot less bearing than it would in Melee, since "the worst character in the game" is still tournament viable in Project M. I feel like Project M's tier list should be taken with a grain of salt, since most people will look at tier lists and use it to make snap judgements of characters, which has truth to fairly unbalanced games like Melee or Brawl, but can be misleading when looking at a game like Project M, where people will look at the lowest placing character and assume he's garbage when in reality, Bowser is probably around the equivalent of Melee Falcon on Melee's list. I know that wasn't the point of your comment, but it's always something that bugs me, lol. It's like when Eventhubs or whoever made a 3.0 tier list way back when which placed Toon Link at last, and suddenly everyone who thought they were good at the game was declaring how terrible Toon Link was despite no one saying it prior and Toon Links still doing absolutely fine at tournaments.

well the point of sticking to one character is to improve and grow with them faster than others. so if you continue doing the same thing over and over then it somewhat defeats the purpose

i already have melee, but my region has next to no tournaments, not to mention people who play melee. my tv also has a lot of input lag because it's not a crt, so is it alright for me to practice in this state, or should i wait until more suitable circumstances
@Iriscience8 жыл бұрын
Salty do NOT practice seriously for any long period of time on anything but a crt, it will heavily inhibit your improvement once you switch to a crt

about number 4 in a Game like Smash thats surprisingly easy for me to accept i lost to someone , unlike in League of Legends where i can try my hardest and lose because of a teammate but in Smash i only rage when losing to a CPU because of unfair level 9 CPU mechanics ( thats why i stopped practing with them , now i practise with Level 1 or 5 , still get riddicolous grabs from them sometimes but not as bad
