While working @ Mattel in the late 1990s, we had a variety of Hot Wheels races similar to the set up shown here. The Manager of the Test Lab Boy’s Toys group contacted the HW factory requesting the fastest car found in their ongoing quality testing protocol. The single car sent was a stock Ferrari F40. Like your TRK, the F40 waltzed through several rounds. That is, until a VW Bug came along. It lost to the F40 by a whisker (we had no electronics at the end of our track, just an independent spotter). Almost everyone said to run them again. The second run was called a tie, a dead heat. The final agreement to crown a champion was a best-of-five takes all. The tracks varied randomly for each pass, determined by the roll of a die. After four runs, the racers were tied. It came down to the last heat, where the F40 nosed the VW. This was before any meaningful change to the wheel design. By the way, how was the VW so fast, you ask? Simple, it was full of lead split-shot fishing sinkers. Good times! 🏎🚙
