I think the more interesting part, as a non-Muslim who has observed Ramadan for years, is the focus on reflection, learning, and not merely abstaining from food but from the excesses of life in general. He did mention discipline, but there’s so much focus on the not eating/drinking aspect when Ramadan is discussed in general that some of the other meaningful components fade into the background. The corporeal discipline is important but it is the striving toward cultivation of the soul that is, I believe, more precious and vital ultimately. I clearly do not know everything about Ramadan and do not experience it as a Muslim does, so I offer an apology for anything that I’ve said in error. [edited to try to make what my thoughts more clear)

@@The_one_that_got_away It’s been 10 years. I started after a close friend of mine passed away suddenly. He aways looked forward to Ramadan and was always gracious when I would ask questions about it and so I started doing it to honor his memory.

Dude, from a Muslim to a non-Muslim, it's all up to The Lord Almighty if He decides to open your heart to Islam because there is no compulsion in Islam. What's more important is your heart. Be a kind human being.

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Every (good) deed of the son of Adam would be multiplied, a good deed receiving a tenfold to seven hundredfold reward. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has said: With the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give a reward for it, for one abandons his passion and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts, joy when he breaks it, and joy when he meets his Lord, and the breath (of an observer of fast) is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk. -Sahih Muslim, Book 35, Hadith 2567

My friend, you mean well, but you have not the slightest understanding of precisely what you are appeasing. You are at great risk of being converted and turned into a radical and losing your family, friends, job and everything else. And the whole concept of Ramadan is theologically flawed. It is not remotely acceptable to God to have bad habits such as greed, disrespect or anger throughout the year and to then put them aside for a month. They should never be there in the first place. X

It's like a training period...yes you should abstain from bad habits all throughout the year...so when a person is training himself for a whole month , not to do anything wrong ,doing more good deeds... don't you think it will have a great impact on him after that period. Just like every job has a training period, ramzan can be seen as a training period to overcome bad habits and do more good in life .

1st of all it's not that we muslims are allowed to sin 11 months and then just 1 month of discipline is enough. It's not like how Christians believe that they can do whatever cause Jesus (pbuh) died for their sins and they are forgiven. Actually, we have to pray everyday of 365 DAYS, 5 times, (it's compulsory, compulsory, compulsory) and need to practice every other good deeds (it's a huge list) that we do in ramadan. Also there are other compulsory fasting days throughout the whole year, not just 30 days of fasting. The only difference is, this 30 days are in a sequence, means a whole month and the other fasting days are a few specific days of the rest of the 11 months. Even it's advised to muslims to fast everyday except 2 occasions of Eid Day if they can. And then being RADICAL is not a bad thing. It depends on who is deciding and defining the BAD.

The idea is that a good habit you build during ramadhan such as discipline, empathy, simplicity, giving charity, etc will continue after ramadhan over. Ramadhan should help you be a better person. In fact, it is considered a loss if a Muslim gain nothing but hunger after ramadhan over.

Muslims, in fact, condemn Shaytaan (Satan) . I don't know where you're getting your facts from. But a practice that teaches patience ,and empathy for those who can't afford food daily is not evil. Even if you don't agree, at least respect and move on. May you find the right path.

@munazahq5127 all of you muslims, and others, do the same thing when it comes to their beliefs. You all lie to. And for some reason you think it's in your benefit to do so. The devil is the father of all lies and in islam, you're permitted to lie. Am I lying about that? Allah tells you that you can lie, so can you tell me exactly who that would make him to be? Or is it easier to avoid the question?
