I fast from food for health reasons; it's amazing. I fast from other things as a Catholic penance practice from time to time, mainly to make more time for better things like prayer.

I'm fasting to get "closer" to God. Like Jesus said: *"Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they?" (Matthew 6:26).* If animals don't worry about their next meal, why should I?

I’m neurodivergent and have the opposite problem. I forget to eat or don’t have the motivation to prepare food and eat when I’m experiencing sensory overload.

I wonder what Fr Gregory would have to say about Aquinas the man, as he is famously known for having been very large. He was known for his purity, but maybe overeating was the thorn that kept him humble?

This is the best video I've ever seen on fasting and the positives of it as well as cautions. Thank you very much

That’s great information! Fr. Gregory Pine has great sense of humour!

Thanks for this thoughtful commentary. I started intermittent fasting about a year ago in part for health/healing (to induce autophagy) and in part for religious reasons (mortification). During this past Lent, I extended my fasts for between 20-39 hours each Friday and finally worked up to a 72 hour fast from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday. Fasting is really hard for me (I've yet to reach the point where my hunger pangs go away and I feel great while fasting), so for extended fasts I need that extra motivation that only religion can provide.
God bless you both, Fr. Pine! (You and the mouse in your pocket.)

A few weeks ago I started only eating one meal per day in order to lose weight and be more healthy. Is it possible to make this fasting into a sacrifice to God or is the intention forever tainted by the desire to lose weight which spurred it on?

Orthodox Christians have been fastin for 2000 years. Our fast is at least 1/3rd of the year (at least). 4 large fasts (2-7weeks), multiple saints days plus every Wednesday and Friday during the year in order to take communion at liturgy. We are not reinventing the wheel, we are just steadily turning the wheel that began its journey with Christ. Hristos voskrese Christ is risen

If you’re going to fast regularly, be careful what you eat before/during/after. Tomatoes, coffee, alcohol, spiciness on a fasted stomach can mess you up. Eat bland when fasting.

If fasting brought about the renewal of the spirit or the curtailing of excessive appetites, I have yet to see it in those who practice it. I have no doubt that there maybe a few who find the practice of fasting transformative. However, I believe for most people, fasting just becomes a means to fool themselves into thinking they are improving in someway when they really are not. Such improvements are fleeting and seldom extend beyond the fasting period.

There's a process to fasting. Physically, you just stop eating as much. Spiritually, you need to WANT it. Most people just take up fasting as a momentary thing instead of a way of life, hence why it's "fleeting" to them. Therefore, if your heart accepts fasting, you are indeed renewing the spirit and ending your excessive appetite.

I’m sure Thomism can be adapted to talk about this, but I feel now with media and technology… we can mortify the lower faculties all we want but if we don’t fast from mental distractions, internet, tv, social media and entertainment addictions it won’t really change us.

Well, the pride you show in this comment tells me you are likely not the best judge of such things. Say it with me please: "From the desire of being consulted, deliver me Jesus"

"Collation" is how you say "snack" in French. Interesting.

Never made this connection, thank you! in italian breakfast is 'collazione', which come to think, they typically have a small breakfast that might be about the size of a snack, hence the cognate. So cool!

I'm old & diabetic with Kidney disease. My eating is geared for my health as much as possible but if you're young, healthy, aren't involved in strenuous labor you can go for it. But if you're anorexic, better seek some professional dietary advice over faith based advice

Watch the video first. Around 500 BC, Buddhist monks counseled eating 1 meal per day. Now in 2024 (and last year in 2023), 100's of thousands (100,000's) of personal trainers now recommend fasting one day per week and eating 1-MAD or 2-MAD (MAD = Meal A Day). All clear?
