Dr. Fung, what is your opinion on BCAA supplements like the powdered version whilst fasting for 72hrs? They claim these enhance the production of ketones by making your liver learn how to produce ketones on a low-carb diet etc or get you into ketosis quicker when fasting. Your help on this is much appricieated.

It really is. We've been trained since childhood to constantly snack. Food is EVERYWHERE. That's why a lot of people find it easier to start with 12/12, then push it out to 16/8 and stick to that for a while. Then push it out to 18/6, 20/4, omad etc. Hey, congrats on the loss so far. You must be feeling amazing! It cant have been easy, so high five!

I've been doing Intermittent Fasting for over 1 year now. I started with 10 hours a day, then 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 hours. I now eat for 2 hours a day, and it eventually turned into a OMAD (one meal a day) pretty fast. I was big, 320 lbs. After adapting the OMAD tactic I saved myself from an early death. It also came with tons of other great things. I saved money and time. Today I am 220 lbs, and I'm very happy with that. I am 6'4, so 220 lbs is fine. I no longer have cravings, my back problems disappeared and I felt so incredibly good. I didn't really restrict my food, I ate what I wanted basically, but only ONCE per day. If I wanted to make a burger, I made a burger, if I wanted to eat a fat juicy steak, I ate it. I literally had no problem losing weight if I just stuck to the fasting/eating window. (Of course, you shouldn't be consuming a 3000 calorie pizza everyday, but you get my point) One more thing, people that say that you are starving yourself and that you will develop eating disorders are wrong. They are jealous, and they lack the discipline to do what you do. Don't let them poison your mind. The human body is a fantastic machine, you will survive. Challenge yourself. Goodluck everyone!

Hi Doctor Fung and thank you guys for your enlightening and encouraging comments. Doctor, I am a Nigerian. I am 48 years old. I weighed 88 kg and a height of 5.3 ft. I came across your videos on reversing diabetes and intermittent fasting about six months ago. It was a perfect timing as at that time I was just diagnosed with diabetes. Since then, I have been practicing intermittent fasting with low carb diet. It's pretty hard for me because all my life I have eaten majorly carb diets. I found ways of improvising following your guidelines. Today, I weigh 72.4kg. I eat my last meal at 4pm and breakfast at between 9 and 10 am and I take averagely 8000 steps per day. My wife and colleagues are complaining about my wait loss. I am happy with it though but I need to look fresh instead of my present 'dry look' what can I do to stabilize my wait loss and look fresh?😃 Thank you.

Then when I did the 72hrs fast I realized I didn't actually need food as much. I am currently 101KG and 4 weeks ago I was at 107KG. I will say, it's ok to fail. If the urge gets the better of you don't be discouraged and let your body have what it wants. Then start again. I did this for a while, with so much up's and downs and eventually, especially after doing 3 days fast, it just seem to re set your body, it's amazing what the longer fasts do! As an RN, I thank you for trying to educate others on the subject. It can help so many people reverse their poor health and get their life back. I do my part, but people around me are quick to defend their high carb lifestyle, because keto or IF is unhealthy and therefore bad for you, yadayada! I've lost 42 pounds, yet people have a hard time understanding they CAN live without carbs like I have, to get to this point. My best friend needs to lose 20 pounds and insists calories in, calories out works, because she can't and won't give up sugar in her coffee (and snacking that she won't admit to). For months she's been complaining and trying to lose weight, yet no weightloss, in fact she probably gained 5 more pounds. In the meantime, I've been steadily losing weight and she won't acknowledge she is on the wrong path and is gaining weight in the process. She is perimenopausal and losing the fight with hormones, cortisol, and sugar! I'm hoping to convert her after the holidays.🤷♀️

I've been fasting on a 16/8 schedule since the end of May and walking lots of steps. I'm down 45kgs as of my last weigh in and I haven't been hungry. This is sustainable. I'll keep on fasting and walking. Ideally, I'd like to be about 70kg. I think I can!
@robinmendelson55123 жыл бұрын
David, for me you say the magic words, “this is sustainable”. I also have been doing intermittent fasting. Usually somewhere between 20 and 22 hours. Low carb, keto also. The weight is coming off. Not fast but not slow. It’s just coming off. I don’t weigh myself but my clothes size goes down. Yes I have a goal, size 8-10 but more importantly I think I can keep this as a way of life. It seems to me that most people have a goal of a certain weight/size and then have a fantasy of going back to an old way of eating. An old lifestyle. For me that is not a possibility and the way I have been eating for about 10 months now seems as you say sustainable for a lifetime of being healthy.

My sugar was 215 and was 137 this morning. Our first 34 hour fast was absolutely miserable, but each fasting day is easier and easier. And we get full so much faster on eating days. I feel amazing, and I'm sure I'll continue after Lent.

This is a good one, I am doing the IF and must confess I am struggling with letting the calorie counting go. I take in 1500cal daily and am always full after a feeding so I feel like if it isn't broke, lets not try to fix it. I purchased his complete guide book and my daily intake is close to/or higher than what he outlines in the book so I guess its ok??? Anyway, luv Dr Fung and all his teachings. I purchased the Complete guide and its workbook, the obesity code, the cookbook, the diabetes code and workbook. I feel that I have finally 'cracked the code'(pun intended) on my battles with obesity for over 30 years of my life(im in my late 30's). I forsee this as something I could maintain forever. And when things get tough, I won't give up! Big ups to Dr. Fung!!!!

The grocery store is much more smaller for me now and of course saving lot of bucks. Wealthy in monetary and health terms.

Nearly everything I get at the grocery store is "on the edges" of the store (the veggies, meats, dairy, etc.). I do pop into some of the other aisles for a handful of things (some spices and similar stuff) but most of the aisles, I never have a reason to go into them.

@@chipspangler736 The one I usually shop at actually (seems to) purposely mix it up. You'll always be an arms-reach away from an unhealthy choice whilst trying to get your healthy staples. Just getting my staples (veggies, meats, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts) I cover 80% of the store. If I want fruit, all I'll have missed is household staples, babyfood and dogfood. It's not an issue for me since my body cannot handle processed food, but it's clever to expose people to all kind of temptations. Then again the other store in the village does have a 'normal' layout, just a massive variety of junk in the middle and it's where most people overweight+ seem to come in and out.

I was watching someone last night say calories in and calories out is how to lose weight so I was going to start doing that again even though it has not worked for me in years. I have been doing IF for 3 yrs and have gained weight. I also had major surgery in September as well and have out on 10lbs in 2020. I am going to keep doing my IF and just be patient. Thia is not a diet for me. This is a lifestyle in my post menopause journey for the rest of my life. Thank You Dr Fung!

What fasting protocol are you using? If you want to lose weight up your fasting. For instance, try alternate day fasting or some longer fasts. You should not be gaining weight unless you either have a tiny fasting window--say 8 hours--or are eating more in your fasting windows. Good luck.

Thank you Dr Fung for a very informative video 🙏🙏 The content completely resonates with my own journey. I weighed 14st 10lbs in Jan last year. Today, I weigh 10st 10lb after doing 14-16 hours of IF a day. I’m planning to get down to 9st 10lbs which will be my optimal weight for my height. The weight loss through IF has encouraged me to get fit, do more exercise, boosted my mental clarity, helped my digestion, given me better sleep, reduced my knee pain and given me a new lease of life at the age of 52. Once I achieve my ideal weight, I intend to use IF for 12-14 hours a day with increase my calories to maintain my weight. Even if I do put on weight because I might relax myself on holiday or at a wedding or party, that’s ok because I now have a magic formula to get me back into a vibrational vortex to stay slim, trim and fit.🙏🙏

O M G. Every time I watch an interview or a presentation about this type of thing. My eyes open wider and my jaw drops. In September of 2019, I started a weight loss journey. I was dedicated to that 1000 calorie deficit. By June, I was 60 down. Then things got harder. Between then and now, I've only been able to go ten down and I am HUNGRY. I feel that hunger in the pit of my gut. In hindsight, I get it now. I'm breaking even with what I eat. This deficit means NOTHING anymore because I'm constantly grabbing something to eat (even if "healthy" and small) due to hunger. Therefore, the insulin response. WOW. I'm just awed at this. How come no doctor is telling me this stuff?!?! I was, however, able to reverse insulin resistance. The dark patches on my neck from too much insulin have VANISHED, but I'm getting frustrated that I'm doing a deficit that's USELESS. January 1, I go keto! I'm OVER the calorie counting game.
@elizabethkoenig51856 ай бұрын
How are you doing now? I've hit a couple of plateaus, but have been able to break through them by fasting more aggressively, a least short term.
@notasmith85216 ай бұрын
@@elizabethkoenig5185 The struggle is real. I ended up going off keto in the fall as I normally do. Then I always bust-ass from January to May to get back down to my weight. This last year, though, I didn't have the motivation to do it. Now I am 30 up from my best weight and it sucks. And the crazy thing is I never eat crazy things. That's the big down-fall with keto. You go off and you are up at least 12ish just like that. My nutritionist suggested to go back to calorie counting but that isn't working this time around (I first lost 60 counting calories). Free rein of food by counting calories only?? I'd like to grab a couple of Oreos, please!! LOL So that's not working for me this time. I need to go back to keto. Structure is good for me. I am not diabetic, either...I just need structure and accountability. :) Hang in there!! You can do it!

Fasting definitely works, I went from 30% body fat to like 12% (and was skinny) back a few months ago; all I did was Alternate Day Fasting for 3 weeks. Mind you it wasn't sustainable and I went back on to 20~ % something body fat. But now I'm at 16% and I'm just doing IF (I eat my breakfast as late as possible and try not to snack in between meals). Combining fasting with 2-3 meals a day (calorie-dense foods) can go along way to getting you leaner.

The reason you lost fat is due to being in a calorie deficit... not some bullshit fasting
@alexjulius693 жыл бұрын
@@ericyoutube77 it's not bullshit. While sure it puts you in a caloric deficit which causes fat loss, it also helps you fix many hormonal problems like insulin resistance which ultimately restores your metabolism and muscle building ability.

Fasting not only creates a simultaneous caloric deficit but also preserves muscle.I fast twice a week for 24 hours and train really hard.Believe me it works!!! EAT STOP EAT IS A LIFESTYLE NOT A DIET No need to obsess over eating

This video is really great - super clear and helpful. So ultimately a calorie deficit is necessary to lose fat but if you don’t address any hormonal issues first (ie hyperinsulinemia/high cortisol) you’ll just end up super-tired all the time - something anyone who’s ever been overweight can recognise.

@cheyd43124 жыл бұрын
Well this just blows that calorific deficit reasoning for weight loss right out of the water. I always felt it didn't make any sense why I would cut my calories but I still wasn't loosing the weight. I just wasn't allowing my body to transition to burning fat instead of burning the calories i continued to consume daily as soon as I got hungry again even though the food had fewer calories. 👏 wow! Clearly I was just eating to maintain that weight. Mind blowing 🤯
