In this video one of my good friends lets me take out is BRAND NEW 2020 Harley Davidson Iron 883 Sportster for a test ride. I loved the bike, but it would not be for me. I think this bike is best suited for new/beginner riders and/or riders that just want a cool looking bike to commute on in and around town. It does not have the power I typically look for in a motorcycle. I'd be very interested in riding the 1200cc variant of the Sportster.

I've been riding over 20 years, and I would never recommend the Sportster as a starter bike. It's a great bike, and like you said, it's a great bike to grow into. But it's one of the heaviest bikes in its class, and it's top heavy at that. It's not that powerful, but it has enough torque to get you in trouble. The Sportster is the best building platform in motorcycles. This bike is still more than enough to get you in trouble if you don't have any experience riding. It's a great bike to get more experience on, and build confidence, but it's still not the ideal bike for riders with no previous experience. I currently own 2 Sportsers, and I love them both, so I can speak to this. Honda's 600 shadow, or Yamaha's 650 v-star are much better first ride bikes. The Sportster is a great bike for the riders who are more about the ride than going super fast. But keep in mind, like any bike, these bikes can be made to go extreme fast. My 88 sporty is on a Pauchgo rigid frame, and has a 883 Harley to Buell xb9 1200cc conversion on it with a lot of engine upgrades, and it will scream. Start in the 600 cc range, get more comfortable and confident, and then step up to the Sportster, or another bike of your choice. There's never any shame in starting small, and moving up through several different bikes to find what you want. Any ride can get you into trouble, so at least minimize the risk with a bike that's suitable for your experience levels. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.

If I have motocross experience but no cruiser experience would a sportster 883 be a good first cruiser? I know motocross and street riding are completely different but I’m just saying I understand how controls on a bike work.
@thomasbarnardjr9657
@thomasbarnardjr9657 Жыл бұрын
@Brayden have you rode a street bike of any kind? I would recommend a Yamaha vstar 650, Honda Shadow, or something similar first, but if you have even some basic experience, the Sportster can be ok. But keep in mind, though it's not fast, the bike does have some pretty good torque, and it can get you in trouble really quickly if you're not careful. It's also a bike that is top heavy... and you really feel it at low speed. No matter what bike you choose, take the msf safety class, and practice in empty parking lots to build your skills. MC Rider has some really great videos on safety tips, good road strategy, escape routes, proper braking etc. I hope this helps. Stay safe, and enjoy the ride.

I love my 2009 883 Sportster Custom. It has Vance and Hines slip ons, forward controls with mini floorboards and a HD Sundowner 2 up seat. It will surprise you with how comfortable it is. I put a taller pulley on the front of the belt drive, so it cruises very comfortable at 68mph, 68 is what 62 used to be. It is one sweet ride and it sounds like the bomb, I constantly get thumbs up and compliments on it. Harley will regret killing that model. Luckily they are still readily available on the used market at killer prices. I can see the day when any classic sportster in decent condition will bring in the big bucks... I say we are about 5 years from that. Grab one now on the cheap. You can find 883's in new condition with less than 5k miles for about $3,000. Best motorcycle deal in the universe.

I think we're these Sportsters really shine is in long-term ownership. How long they last and out easy to rebuild they are. Now if somebody's always chasing the most exciting bike and doesn't mind Trading in their motorcycle every few years to get the next most exciting thing then this bike probably isn't for you.

I toured over 20 States on an 883 Sportster and it was fine. Of course I had to upgrade to a touring seat and put used Road King shocks on the back as well as a big windshield and forward controls.

@jamessouthworth1699

@@theAverageAmericanTroy I'm being totally genuine. Those are the parts I actually put on the bike. On one of my trips I did just under a thousand miles in a day going from New Orleans to Miami. That was a little extreme but when I kept it around 400 to 500 miles in a day that was much better. For windshield I used the national cycle plexifairing because it was detachable for when I wasn't on a long trip and it offered the most coverage for when I was. I also had detachable saddlebags with ghost brackets. On one trip from Philadelphia to Texas I towed a small trailer behind it. I wish I could post pictures on this comment.

The throttle on the 2019+ iron 883's getting stuck seems to be a manufacturing issue. I have a '19 and I ended up crashing in a sharp corner 3 hours after leaving the harley dealership; because the throttle stuck open halfway through the clutch release coming out of the corner. The back tire came out from under me as a result of the stuck throttle, high rpm clutch engagement and lean angle. Adrenaline kept me moving to run over and pick it up probably 200 feet away from where I landed and rode that tough SOB home; got some mean road rash, a fractured wrist, and thankfully my backpack kept my head with no helmet on, off the road. Took it up to the same harley dealership where I got it and they said "we'll fix the throttle", but everything else that is supposed to be covered under new vehicle warranty which got damaged(including the bent forks, dent in the tank, and bent bars) are up to my own dime and insurance to fix. Super shitty customer service and rider protection, so whoever reads this and wants a new iron 883, check the throttle before moving an inch on that thing or you run the possibility of getting screwed out of a couple grand or more on top of the thousands you just signed for and that money doesn't even get to go to the upgrades.

Just don't buy a Harley at all. Problem solved. The only appeal to them is the "American Badass" vibe and to be honest it's outdated, and extremely overpriced for an underbuilt bike. Not to mention the whole land pirate, trucker on two wheels lifestyle. They all have issues and rattle themselves apart. But, like Jeep guys. It seems Harley guys enjoy when their expensive new things are broken.

@ bill hedrick You obviously have zero idea of what the harleys have been since the mid 90's. It's like everyone on a crotch rocket and leather is a semi pro bike rider, not a doosh that shouldn't even have a license. Stick with your vespa or cheap cruiser that you can't give away in 4 years. You are just spewing the same tired garbage from people that still think harley is still owned by AMF.

Bro I figured out what makes your videos really good and that’s the fact you don’t say um or stop talking. Your delivery is truly like you are living into the vlog. Love the music and intro. Your review was great, that bike is very similar to my Suzuki S50 Boulevard except it looks way more modern and sporty with the blackout look while my boulevard has more of a classic look. I agree with you in that I think I’m going to upgrade at some point so let me know if you ever want to sell that v rod! You might want to see if Harley will let you do a test drive on a fat boy and a fat bob. They seem similar to the v rod. By the way now I noticed the Fat Boy Arnold was riding in Terminator 2. I bought that 20' Black Denim back in mid-March brand new had 8 miles on it when they dropped it at my house. It's my 1st bike, so I don't know what it's like to be on a bigger bike. It could probably use a little more oomph.I currently have around 6500 miles on it as we speak. I changed the pipes back in late April, and I'm in the process of getting the stage 1 finished. It's been a great bike for my 1st! Might have it converted to a 1250 or 1275 later down the road once my extended warranty expires, if I end up keeping her.

Stock i would say the power is comparable to a 3-400cc sport bike. Its not slow, i hate when people say that. Plenty of power, and its a vtwin air cooled cruiser. Very nice bike. I’ll probably keep this thing forever. Eventually I may put a 1250 in it, but thatd be way down the road after the 883 gets a lot of miles. 883 is all you need for the street, not too slow and not too fast. It is heavier, but it doesn’t really feel like it imo

I have a 2015 Iron and a stage one upgrade makes a big difference with these bikes. I have no problem keeping up in group rides. I Love it. The only upgrade I'll make is to a Street Glide! A bagger anyway but I have my heart set on a Street Glide. But I do wanna test ride a Road Glide too.

That was a great job, great video. I just got my 883 iron last weekend. It’s not my first bike, I had the Harley Street rod. I much prefer the 883 because it is so nimble and like you said, since I usually ride alone, I don’t care how fast it is, I’m not going after checkered flags

I agree .... seeing the Iron makes me wanna ride for the first time but every butt head Harley rider i talk to call it a girls bike. Harley riders are Harley Davidsons worst enemy. They say at least get the 1200 but the 1200 doesnt look like the Iron 883 at all.
@mushroomcloud1
@mushroomcloud1 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeremybrocknblue5593 You are 100% correct. The 883 looks better than the 1200. I have been riding for 45 years. Most people who call the Iron a girls bike are posers who are too stupid to know the history of the Motor Company and the Sporty. Or they haven't been riding long and are just parroting what they have heard like little sheep. The Iron is distilled motorcycle essence. Two wheels and a motor. The assholes who are so soft that they need a dresser so their delicate little bottoms don't hurt are the pussies. Ride what you like and tell everyone else to get fucked.

There are definitely better suited commuter bikes out there, but those bikes can be used as one! If money isn't an issue the s1000rr has more creature comforts (heated grips, cruise control, etc) that would make it a more enjoyable bike to commute on

Great vid. I own a 2017 883. Very fun! Handles good and sounds awesome with slip-on's. Best sounding Harley IMO. Accurate review. 👍 Hey, that's a really special bike. Not like anything else. The people that own them and support them are not typical either. 🤗🤔

Thx for the vid. Just window shopping for a born-again virgin first bike (something comfortable and to cruise with; no need to squid out) and your review helped quite a bit. Honestly, been wondering if a “training wheel” used Honda shadow/rebel so that I can just drop it around may be the better selection - but having a goal certainly helps. And nice R32 catch. I’m more of a car guy.

Reminds me of the '07 1200XLR I sold with that little peanut tank. Loved the looks and the sound. Even on the 1200, I think you'll still find it a bit lacking in the power department. I don't know what power they make now, but my 07 is said to only have had about 58.3hp. Sprinting on the roads was a lot of fun, but the highway was not enjoyable because of the short 5th gear. At 70mph, I want to say it was around 3.5 - 4K which is a lot for that EVO engine and pretty close to the end of it's power band. (Sportster Roadsters have a tach, dual front disc brakes and a taller stance for handling). I'm telling you, your 120hp, 9K redline, with powerband above 6K V-Rod is where it's at IMO. Oh, and the lack of throttle response on your V-Rod is intentional to tame it down a bit with a slipper clutch. You still manage to snake the rear-end though at intersections, lol.
@FastLaneD
@FastLaneD 4 жыл бұрын
I've never ridden a 1200XLR but I don't think it would enjoy having my 230 lb body on it 🤣. The more I learn about the v-rod muscle the more I love it. That's good to know! I was gonna look into adjusting the throttle sensitivity. She loves to slide in 1st gear! haha thank you for watching 🤘🏾

Man it seems like everyone and they're brother are always ragging on the Iron 883. Newsflash people the Iron 883 is a budget Bike. That means it's not going to have all the fancy things the other Harley bikes. In my opinion give the bike a chance and test ride it before y'all bash it.

As I said in the video, I think the 883 is a phenomenal bike! Especially if you’re a new rider or just looking for something small to commute on. However, if you want something with a lot of power you’ll be disappointed. This bike definitely has its niche place in the market though!
