I put a Tremec TKO in a 1965 Mustang. I also had clerlance issues. I did not use a hydralic throw out bearing. I actually used 1/8" plexiglass sheet, and drilled out the two clutch release lever bracket holes which the clutch piviot arm is attached. I also perfecly drilled the four mounting holes from a 4spd/3spd 1965 bell housing. Than I bolted the plexiglass to a Tremec bell housing with the four bolts and than drilled the new holes for the clutch release lever bracket. I measured the diffrenced on all the transmition input shaft, front plate that the original throw out bearing rides. I added a spacer between the bell housing anf the clutch release lever bracked ( 5/8th inch aluminium solid block). Doing this, was able to use all my oriinal clutch linkage, Z-bar, and peddle. Yes, it is not smooth like a hydralic bearing. But I wanted it to look original, which it does. I also had a custom aluminium drivehaft made. This transition is great compared to the 1965 4spd.

Great video, thanks. I've seen many articles about the TKO being notchy and often complaints about 2nd to 3rd shifts. I think you mentioned the TKX was notchy, which you liked. I realize notchy can mean different things to different people and many will say it's a negative i.e. "gears seems not to mesh momentarily, and then engage". I currently have a T10 4 speed in a SBF and all I can say is that is shifts smooth and easily at all rpms. I'm planning on moving to a 351w stroker and would consider the TKX if I hear a general consensus that it also shifts smooth and easily at all rpms. Can you comment more on the 'notchy" aspect you mentioned and even your 2nd to 3rd gear shift experience. Thanks again. Jim
@FastMonty3 жыл бұрын
Great question Jim! I agree "notchy" is not only subjective, but definitely left up to interpretation. While I don't have a ton of seat time on the TKX, cuz I'm putting in Fuel Injection now, I can say the shifter felt much improved over the TKO. Let me think of some other terminology... Smoother, Less Effort, Engaging, Better Syncing, (which I noticed just going into reverse). I swear it was a shorter throw too... Once I get rolling again, I'll have to do some of my favorite shifts... that's 1st to 3rd, on hard launches. But, won't try that until I have surpassed the 500 mile break in period. I hope that helps? Thanks again for your awesome observation, hope to see more comments from you in the future.

I installed the TKO 600 in a 68 El Camino. That I purchased from American Powertrain. Supposedly the kit was supposed to be a bolt in kit no trimming at all. I had nothing but problems with the kit oh, I think they lied to me they told me maybe my body bushings were shot. Well they were wrong I took out the 68 body bushings and they will perfect. So anyway in order for me to get my pinion angle I had to move that transmission way up in the tunnel. I even had to cut the front seat mount bracket that goes from one side to the other side of the car. I had to cut out way more sheet metal than you did. But the results are awesome I can burn Tire 1 2 and 3 gears with no wheel hop at all. Because we're the El Camino if you don't have your pinion angle correct you'll get wheel hop

You showed some of the extra space, using your “screwdriver micrometer”, but how about your opinion of what mods, if any would have been required had you installed the TKX first?
@FastMonty3 жыл бұрын
Great question West... tough to answer that, purely because no two 69 GTO's will have the "identical" fit up. But, I'm pretty confident that it would probably take some minor "dimpling" towards the rear tail shaft area. Again, it depends on ride height too... as you can tell, my car is 3" lower than stock. When installing the TKO, or TKX, the rear mount is higher than the Muncie location. (I don't know the exact amount, I'm guessing almost 1/2", which is major change to the driveline angle. And, if you're running long tube headers like I am, it lowers those too... so, I wasn't happy about that, and had to shim the mount to raise it up further. The new TKX allows me to continue with bigger shims, almost getting me back to Muncie level.) Sorry for the rambling, but if you're worried about driveline angle, or header height, make sure you take those into account when "test fitting" the TKO/TKX. Thanks for the comment, and let me know if you have any other questions... See ya!

Good question Brian... the weight is Negligible. I couldn't find the TKX spec, but the TKO is 99 lbs., dry. I think they just rearranged gear location, so I can't imagine there's a ton of weight savings. At least I couldn't tell when lifting it out of the box. Ha, ha.... thanks for watching!

I've got a '65 GTO and I want to switch from the factory 15 inch wheels to 17 inch wheels and lower profile tires. What do you think about running 3.90 or 4.11 in the rear- it ought to be fairly decent on the highway at .68? Or would you recommend spending the extra bucks and going to a Magnum 6 speed trans? Thanks for your series- I want to upgrade my factory M21, and swap out the 389 for a rebuilt 428 with Edelbrock heads and a Lunati roller cam
@FastMonty3 жыл бұрын
@@wheelhorseman2306 Welcome to the channel... switching wheel sizes has nothing to do with engine speeds, etc... as long as you pick a tire that has the same OD (Outside Diameter, or greater than the original tire) That said, I'd say an overdrive of at least .68 is mandatory for your tall gears. A Magnum is awesome, and has the same final gear as the TKO/TKX. The issue is the Magnum, as the name infers, is HUGE. You will absolutely be cutting up your tunnel to make that fit. Love your idea going with a rebuilt/modified 428. Keep at it, and see you soon!

I miss my t56 its to expensive 🤣 how much hp can the TKX hold?
@FastMonty3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, T56 is too expensive, and too big.:) Transmissions are rated on Torque. Horsepower is just an equation of (RPM x Torque) divided by 5252. So, the TKX can handle 600 lbft. of torque throughout it's entire RPM range. Peak range being 8000 RPM... so, if your engine can put out 600 lbft of torque at 8000 rpm, that's 914 Horsepower. That being said, Torque peaks much sooner than 8000, which in this example, would be higher than 600. That's why it depends on your engine's peak torque. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

@@JUNKYARDGTO OK? Not sure what to tell you... Hp is the quotient of Torque and RPM. So, if you make 500 hp at 5000 RPM, you an detrmine your torque, etc... Here's a link to the transmission used in Cadillac's, and ZL1's etc... all of them have a torque rating, not a hp rating. www.tremec.com/anexos/Literature/Product.Sheet_TR-6060.pdf That said, great to hear you can hold 2500 hp. I have a Big Block 66 Corvette Coup with the Muncie M20 4spd . I recently swapped the factory 4:11 gears for 3:55s and it still isn't freeway friendly ! I have to do something and was thinking about a TKX total package upgrade (clutch , flywheel , cross member , shifter , drive shaft , etc.) . I was told I need to replace my (original) body mounts to get it to clear the tunnel . What's your thoughts ? I'll be making reference to your videos if I go forward with this swap / upgrade .
@FastMonty3 жыл бұрын
Great question, George... as you may, or may not know, I too had a Muncie M20 with a 3:55 rear end. And going 70 mph was not fun... 3000 rpm ish? So, I understand. Getting an overdrive in there will be a night and day difference. To your question... if your body panels are nice and lined up, DO NOT change the body mounts. You will have a nightmare trying to re-align panels. Even then, that won't buy you a ton of tunnel space for the pain caused. In all honestly, your best bet is moving forward with a TKX kit, and say a ton of prayers to the car gods that you don't have to modify your tunnel. But, be mentally prepared to do so. My issue is that my car is lowered by 3" and ground clearance is critical to me. When I put my TKO in, I did not have my long tube headers mounted, and didn't realize until after I cut the tunnel, that the transmission sits lower at the tail, which caused the headers to dip lower. When I got the TKX in, I now have an extra 1/2" to raise the tail, with no tunnel issues. So, that's a good sign. Hope that helps... let me know what you decide to do, I'll help as much as I can. Moral of the story, the TKX is totally worth it!
