Fat Albert is a 2004 American live-action/animated comedy film based on the 1972 Filmation animated television series Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids created by Bill Cosby. Kenan Thompson stars as the title character. Fat Albert transforms the cartoon characters into three-dimensional humans, who have to come to grips with the differences that exist between their world and the real world. The film acts as a continuation of the series; Fat Albert and the gang leave their 1972-1975 cartoon world, and enter the 2000s real world to help a teenage girl, Doris Robertson (Kyla Pratt), deal with the challenges of being unpopular.

The animation in this film is pretty good. Part of me wonders if they intended to use this movie to be a pilot film for a modern-day reboot of the cartoon? Also, Bill is portrayed by Keith Robison who also portrayed Joel Rawlings the Green Ranger on Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue.

Kenan is so funny not only due to his great comedic timing, but also because of how genuinely he has FUN with what he is doing. So many SNL cast members are wooden in their performances and he is always right there, living it and loving it. That feeling of genuine fun is the secret ingredient in all great comedy.

It’s amazing how heartfelt this movie can be when it comes to how Fat Albert is related to Doris and how he tries to help her, but it can be really bad in other parts like most of the comedy.

Kenan Thompson really gave his all during this movie, and did most of Fat Albert's gang. It's just a shame the writing barely gave them anything to work with. Kenan at least kept this from being as bad as it could've been. Also, Doug's right, the Cosby Jokes pretty much right themselves.

It’s a shame that there is an expectation for actors to do amazing regardless of bad directing/writing and such and if they can’t they are bad. Super weird expectation. Cooks/chefs aren’t expected to make great meals without proper prep of good ingredients. Same here cus if actors aren’t given anything good in writing they’re at a deficit already then throw in upper management and their unwillingness to budge and give actors freedom no shit they can’t save a movie with nothing else going on.

It seems natural (I’ve never seen the film or the show, except maybe when I very little) partly because he’s physically matched to the character (it was always weird seeing him portray skinny people on SNL like Michael Steele), but also because he’s long done a killer Bill Cosby impression, even well before Cosby’s public unmasking and downfall.

Another movie that apparently wasn't well received, but I loved and heard nothing but good things about since I watched it. Albert talking about pushing a woman away from the curb wasn't a joke. It was a callback to a gentlemanly thing to do that's no longer practiced. It's another example of why Lorie falls for Albert; he's extremely caring, even in mundane ways.

What always perplexed me about this wave of live-action(ish) old cartoon adaptations is how far the writers seem to intentionally stray from the supposed source material, to the point it's only tangentially related to it, and instead go for old and trite plots, contributing to this distinct "Direct to video" aftertaste left in the viewer's mouth.

According to an article about the making of the animated segments of the film, the characters from the series had to be redesigned for the movie because the original designs were owned by Filmation's then-rights-holder, Hallmark. Said changes are slight, though, with the characters in the movie overall appearing more cartoonish compared to how they appear in the show.

Another Fun Fact: Bill wears a blue sweatshirt depicting a superhero on it, that superhero is The Brown Hornet. He was a cartoon character Fat Albert and his friends watched from their TV at the Junkyard. Each Brown Hornet segment featured a moral lesson that Fat Albert would use later on in every episode. The Brown Hornet segments were added during Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (1972)'s run from 1979-1984.
