One of the best mullet profiles that I tie. So far its caught about 20 different species (that I know about) and I'm sure it will catch many more!
It key to this fly is fly is to keep it sparse you do not need loads of material for this fly, 3 small bunches of between 25/40 strands (depending on the size hook you are tying on) folded back on its self.
The I have tried loads of glues/adhesives ect for this pattern plast-dip is the best, it shrinks as it dries stays light and has a soft squidgy feel to it and is tougher than anything else.
Material List,
Hook: gammakatsu SL12 #4/0-#8/0
Thread: Danville Flat waxed 210 White
Tail support: Super hair white
Tail:SF Blend white, and Angel Hair
Head: 0.5 inch pearl braid tubing, SF Blend in White and Olive
Eyes: 8 mm -12 mm 3D eyes
Glues: Plasti-dip, gel superglue, and Loon UV thin

I'm definitely putting this in my arsenal , I found the pearl braid at the dollar store it is usually found on the shelves around Halloween as decoration 36ft for a buck ! I'm loving this pattern and with the soft gel uv this one can be made easily, thanks so much for posting this video ! 👍🏼

Great tie Rupert. One of the beauties of this fly is the variations you can come up with. I like to use a deceiver type tail for flies fished slowly for barramundi or an all flash tail for flies fished really deep. You can vary the head with some wraps of lead under the cone or a shot of foam packing rod under the foam to produce a waking type surface fly.

Can't wait to make a couple of these mullet, they're running thick on FL east coast now. Is the plasti-dip the same as you'd use on tools, only in clear?

You've go this one wired! I've been looking for a tie with maximum profile and a minimum amount of materials giving the streamer that translucency that I know fools fish time and time again. I originally learned of plasti-dip from legendary tier Steve Farrar. It's time that I picked up a can. Great music too, thanks for sharing. btw I saw some pearl braid as well as other colored tubings the other day at the JoAnn Fabrics. You get a grip of it for like 5 bucks. I'm going to give it a try.

This is an old Rich Murphy pattern called a Pamet Special. With a bit extra hair over the EZ body. If you're in the U.K. you may not have heard of him, but look up his patterns.

Fantastic fly. I hope one day to be as good at tying. I have a couple questions. 1) What kind of tubing are you using. 2) What exactly is plasti dip. 3) Is the shredded mylar something you made yourself.
@RupertHarveysflies
@RupertHarveysflies 8 жыл бұрын
+PapaBaske its a tubing I got in a craft store but I can remember where will try dig out the invoice and let you know, plasti dip is a product used to rubberize metal ect check out www.plasti-dip.co.uk and the shredded Mylar is a coarse angle hair/flash. but normal angel hair will work just as well.

Looks great. I bet that plasti dip smells terrible😂. There’s a similar pattern guys have used out here in the western US for fly fishing the Mexico salt for the last 20-30 years, but they just dip the head of the fly directly in the goop.

Rupert Harvey hey harvey! what type of plasti dip is it that you use? the spray can or the actual can thats ment to dip your tool handles in?
@RupertHarveysflies

This looks like a great fly for Striped Bass and I have been making it but I do have two questions. 1) How do you keep the EZ-body braid from separating after you cut it and 2) what is it that you put in front of the braid before you fold it back onto itself and tie it off?
@RupertHarveysflies
@RupertHarveysflies 9 жыл бұрын
Bob Boyhan Hi Bob, 1) nothing just tie it down, it will fray a little but it will make it easier to tie down as the material will not "crimp" (best word for it) on its self. 2) its just a little uv glue to seal the threads.Makes the fly more durable. Hope this helps!

Rupert, you are truely a Master fly designer.This bait-fish pattern has a large profile, is sparse, lightweight and is deserving of innovative recognition. It surely ranks up there with a Deceiver, Clouser, Dalberg Diver, Surf Candy, and Hollow Fleye.Plasti-Dip link:www.amazon.com/Performix-12219-Plasti-Dip-Clear/dp/B00I9SK8WK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1481386584&sr=8-4&keywords=clear+plasti+dip
