hi all here's part 32 from the second series from my "Fat lad on world tour" in this one i have a little walk around Guatape in Colombia .
Guatapé is a municipality in Colombia , located in the eastern subregion of the department of Antioquia . It is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Alejandría and Concepción , to the east by the municipalities of San Rafael and San Carlos , to the south by the municipalities of Granada and El Peñol , and to the west by El Peñol . Its capital is 79 kilometers from the city of Medellín , capital of the department of Antioquia . The municipality has an area of 76 square kilometers.
History
Before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, this territory was inhabited by aboriginal ethnic groups, some of them led by a remembered chief named Guatape . In his honor, the town was named in this way.
Another name that the town has had in the past is "La Ceja de Guatapé".
In 1714, the indigenous people of "Guatapé" from this region were grouped into a reservation known as San Antonio de Remolinos de El Peñol . As vestiges of their existence, there remain some funerary urns made of clay found in the town called Alto Verde , and in several archaeological sites not yet studied, in the villages of La Peña, La Piedra, El Roble and El Rosario .
Guatapé has undergone several changes throughout history, going from being essentially a livestock , agricultural and mining area , to a gigantic reservoir being built in the 1970s , forcing the population to change its economy to tourism.
In the 1970s, Empresas Públicas de Medellín built a large hydroelectric complex here by flooding 2,262 hectares of land. This megaproject had a major social, economic, political, environmental and cultural impact on the town.
Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Today, Guatapé has great potential to exploit religious tourism, agrotourism, ecotourism, culture and adventure. It has hotels, restaurants, boats, launches and tourist sites to enjoy, contemplate, meditate and rest. Territorial marketing projects are currently being developed for the community, with the aim of supporting a sustainable and relevant development process with the community of Guatapé.
Among the most representative cultural elements of the municipality are the plinths, many of which were made in the early years of the 20th century , and which are still preserved on the facades of the town's houses; new models of these plinths can also be found that recount different parts of indigenous history and the colonization of Antioquia. A representative place of the town is the street known as "los Recuerdos".
In 2010, it was one of the sub-venues of the IX South American Games . In 2018, Guatapé launched its tourism brand to the world, with which it wants to make the world aware of "Guatapé, a colorful destination", thus representing this magical place full of plinths, history and lots of color.
