The driver of the Range Rover was sentenced to 4½ years in September 2010 for causing death by dangerous driving. He was also uninsured at the time of the incident. 4½ years seems way too lenient for what he did, particularly as he may have only served 2 years for good behaviour.

In Australia we have annual medical exam for all drivers over 75yrs which includes eye sight test. This is sent electronically from both the Dr and the Optometrist to the driving authority. Police do not need to waste time doing street clinics. Its a simple move to send people to the Optician each year as so many treatable eye conditions are picked up. Drs also do other tests to which test other skills necessary to drive safely. Licences can be revoked on the spot by the Dr and returned with a good result of a Comprehensive Driving Test done on the road with the specially trained and certified Occupation Therapist. This whole approach has improved road safety.

@eliz_scubavnАй бұрын
The barrier isn’t going to magically land from outer space into the railway crossing. You need the physical barrier, plus a crew who have the technical training to actually do the job, plus safety and operational testing of the barrier, plus the costs of any delays to traffic/trains and local business. They had to do repairs to the railway crossing in my town due to simple wear and tear and that bill came to £8000 very quickly. My route to work took me over that crossing regularly and having it shut off was an absolute pain in the backside because it added a mile or so to my route and took me through a horribly busy section of the town at the worst time.

The fact that so many people risk their lives trying to beat a train is ridiculous. I know how much trains weigh, and the reason they can pull so much is exactly the same reason they can't stop on a dime - which is the efficiency of rails when it comes to friction. Rails are nearly frictionless, which is great when pulling millions of pounds of weight. But _because_ they're nearly frictionless, they really struggle to climb hills, slow down on downhills - and stop in an emergency. Combine that with the fact that people misjudge how close they are because of how big they are, is a recipe for disaster. Always look both ways before crossing - even when there are bell/lights/gates!

We have lots of fatal crashes in my part of Scotland. Usually motorcyclists who come up from other parts of Britain to do the North Coast 500 and they ride too past and end up binning their machine and themselves. Young drivers driving cars that are too powerful for their standard and skills also end up the same way. We have one traffic police unit in the Highlands and they’re in Dingwall. So, even after the crash happens it’s around a 2 hour wait for them to arrive, (and they drive like formula 1 dudes), and by the time everything is concluded you’re usually 10/12 hours for the average fatal or possible fatal crash. If they think a person may die from their injuries they treat the scene the same as they do for fatals. Total pain in the tits when there’s only one way off the Isle of Skye etc.

I’ve hired three cars in the UK. Each time we booked an automatic transmission, but were told on arrival that they didn’t have any. Get into the 21st Century UK. All those flipping roundabouts while driving a manual car, is ridiculous.

Have more control in a manual and its a more enjoyable driving experience. I did not feel safe at all while driving automatic. You drive a manual. An automatic drives you.

I don't understand the issue with the personalized plates. In the US, all plate, personalized or not, are issued through the state you live in. Personalized plates cost a lot more, but there's never an issue with their legality because the state issues them. Do personalized plates in the UK come from a third party? If so, it's a great way to alter the identity of a vehicle.

The police guy in the car with the old guy broke the law by letting him wear no seat belt on

The old guy is an adult. Not the driver's responsibility. The only person breaking the law was the old guy. (Highway Code)
