Fatal Fury (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Takara's 1993 fighting game for the Sega Genesis, Fatal Fury.
Played through as Joe Higashi on the normal difficulty level.
Fatal Fury: The King of Fighters was an important stepping stone for SNK and the Neo Geo, but I can't say that the arcade game was ever a favorite of mine. The graphics and sound were nice, but I always thought that it felt a bit too limited after playing Street Fighter II.
I felt just about as indifferent about it as I did the SNES port ( • Fatal Fury (SNES) Play... ), so I was pretty surprised when I found myself getting into this Genesis version.
The gameplay is far more responsive and fluid feeling than it is on the SNES, and lane system that was cut from that version is present on the Genesis. The Sega port's special moves are easier to pull off, and the AI even retains some of the funny quirks of the arcade game's, like how Geese can easily be beaten with nothing more than throws.
The Genesis port cuts a lot of content - Billy Kane and Hwa Jai are missing, as are the bonus stages - but the general level of playability more than compensates for the loss, as do the extra moves that were added in for this version.
The graphics and sound are also pretty good here. The backdrops have been well adapted to the lower color depth and the fighter sprites are big and animate with a good sense of weight. The voices are reasonably clean, and the music sounds great - I much prefer the energetic and twangy FM sound here over the cheesy, thin sounding samples of the SNES game.
(But that grunt that Joe lets out with his win pose... does that sound to anyone else like Zangief when he threw people in SF2?)
I'm not a huge fan of the original Fatal Fury game in any format, but I was impressed by the Genesis version's gameplay. If you're looking to play on a 16-bit system, even with its missing content, this is the one to go with.

Idk if it's this one or 2, but Billy Kane's stage music never left my head no matter how long ago I played this game.(only played it for a week when it was first out)

It's missing a few characters and stages, but that's small potatoes considering how much better it plays than the SNES version.

Glad to see all the hilarity of the Genesis-version A.I. on full display here, as well as the ehm... interesting 3-lane system these earlier _Fatal Fury_ games had. Can't say I've ever been crazy about that part of this series, but the characters and stages were always cool. Perfecting Raiden by throwing him was pretty entertaining, I must say.

What's here is good. I love the music, graphics are solid. 12-Mb cart maybe with a 16-Mb they could have had the 2 missing fighters? I always thought Sega should step in and foot the bill for a bigger cart size to make sure fighters like this had an advantage over their SNES counterparts because Street Fighter was still a SNES exclusive. Still ended up being better then the SNES version though.

The Genesis port was my first experience with Fatal Fury and I LOVED it! Some time later, I rented the SNES port and I cannot put into words how much it disappointed me. Hell, even the music on the Genesis version is superior!

I never played *_"King of Fighters"_* as a kid, but I've heard that it's sort of a crossover fighting game. Characters from games like *_"Samurai Shodown"_* & *_"Art of Fighting"_*

The only time a Sam Sho character was in a KoF game, both times Nakoruru, was KoF 95 Game Boy as a hidden character, and in KoF XIV. KoF is mainly Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury fused, with characters from other SNK games.

Starting with Fatal Fury 2, I feel the FF series surpassed SF II. The Fatal Fury characters at least had personality. Remember, like Fatal Fury, and Art of Fighting, Street Fighter didn't get off to a hot start either. Same guy did all 3 series.

Missing two characters, and all the characters have different voices from the arcade game. As I said for the SNES version, hard pass (I own both versions though haha), and quite honestly, not very good, just like the SNES port.

Fun fact: the engine the game runs on was actually going to be for Street Fighter 2. Capcom rejected it for them wanting a different and faster engine, so the creator of Fatal Fury went to SNK to make this instead
