If you Google "make your own Fate dice" the primary hits show you how you can make the plus/minus/blank icons by connecting the pips on normal dice, using a permanent marker. The 2 and 3 become minus, the 1 and 5 become plus, and the 4 and 6 are connected around the edge to make a box for the blank face.

Thanks for the tip. I think that is in the FUDGE resources, though FUDGE has seemed quiet for years.

You can get a set of 20 fudge dice in 5 sets of colors and a bag for 10 bucks. I feel like it’s def worth it

As an old DnD Dm from 80, it’s hard to lure me away from the old ways but I’m intrigued by your comments. I’ll try it. I’m tired of as you say bean counting.

Give it a try, and don't be afraid to hack it a bit. I run it more like a traditional RPG (very few compels or scene aspects) and it works fine for pickup games. I even run old school D&D a little lighter than written on the tin. All the best!

I tend to use fate as a short adventure I run in between our major dm campaigns that last about 3 to 4 sessions which gives dm time to make there next big 5e campaign.

Fate does seem more suited for shorter campaigns and one-shots. And props for giving your main gamemaster a break once and a while.

Why waste time painting dice? I mean, if it works for you fine. But Fate has always said you don’t need special dice. Grab 4 d6 from your house somewhere- rob a couple board games you have that you don’t play much. Roll them. 1&2 are - 3&4 are 0 5&6 are +

A BIG problem with most RPG dice systems: OK, you're rolling twelve Fudge Dice and you need seven successes. Is that good, is that bad, do I have almost no chance of succeeding, am I going to make it easily? How about when I roll a few dice and add them together, and I want to roll fifteen or higher -- am I good at this, is this impossible? Players need to grasp numbers, but they shouldn't need to be able to do statistical analysis on the fly or be left in the dark. d10 or d100 systems are far more clear, and moreso when your goal number is modified, but the dice never are. To pick this lock , you need to roll a nine or less. You have a 9% chance, which is do-able, but not great. If you use a Luck Point, the number jumps to 18 -- an 18% chance. Still not great, but twice as likely as it was before -- that should be perfectly clear to most adult and young adult players. ANY OTHER DICE SYSTEM = significant clarity issues with zero benefits. I buy RPG's to get complete-ish settings and fleshed-out systems that save me work (like a good magic system with bunches of spells and classes) but I always toss the dice systems and replace them with something consistent throughout and much more straight-forward.

With rolling 4 Fudge dice, you are going to get on or around your level most of the time. It's pretty zero-centered. That can be a plus or minus depending on how swingy you like your dice mechanic. A lot of dice pool mechanics, though, can make it very hard to predict how a roll will turn out.

@@sharpmountaingames9303 I mean this is one of the things that made me interested in trying fate is the fact that the dice system averages to 0 as much as it does. As a person who got his start in D&D and there fore d20 based systems as a whole weather or not you will be consistently good at the thing you are supposed to be good at is more or less a crapshoot. In fate if my opponent is +1 better than me in a skill he will beat me most of the time but because of the way fates mechanics reward shifts of successes not by much and by setting up aspects I can increase my chances of victory pretty substantially .

@@joshuaturner4602 Fate is much less swingy than a d20 (especially when you consider that even a +2 is just a +10%). Fate is a lot less swingy in terms of the dice. That may or may not work for some folks, which is of course a matter of personal taste. Thanks for watching Joshua and have a great day.

@@sharpmountaingames9303 I may have failed to communicate clearly. I know that fate is less swingy, than d20 systems. The fact that it is less swingy was an attractive proposition to me. I like the idea that a wizard with a +3 in Arcane Lore almost certainly wont be out preformed by a Barbarian with a +0 in Arcane Lore. It makes your characters feel like they are consistently good at the things they are supposed to be good at

Worst game ever tried...buggle the mind it is stll updated in 2020. Completely unplayable due to extremely crunchy rules, aspects creep and non consistent resolution systems

I run it a little more like FUDGE, leaning a little less on the scene aspects and compels. That way it is more like a traditional game. So I understand your concerns. Thanks for watching.
