Just FYI but Fou HAS regained some of his former intelligence after the Lostbelts, since he feeds off conflict between humans (and the whole Lostbelt thing is a war between seven alternate realities and the last remaining humans if the original reality). Though he lost his Beast title… for the moment.

For what it's worth, Cath Palug in the myths *is* described as a cat, albeit a giant one. Fou, meanwhile, appears to be some sort of canid (which tracks as SPOILER is described as a dog in some materials). Of course, given what Fou *actually* is I imagine the specific details are irrelevant.

Gawain and Lancelot actually compared Barghest’s Black Dog Form in LB6 to the Cath Palug they faced (yes, they faced Cath Palug in a relatively strong state, though not quite Beast). So yes, he likely is a dog.
