Just FYI but Fou HAS regained some of his former intelligence after the Lostbelts, since he feeds off conflict between humans (and the whole Lostbelt thing is a war between seven alternate realities and the last remaining humans if the original reality). For what it's worth, Cath Palug in the myths *is* described as a cat, albeit a giant one. Fou, meanwhile, appears to be some sort of canid (which tracks as SPOILER is described as a dog in some materials). Of course, given what Fou *actually* is I imagine the specific details are irrelevant.

Gawain and Lancelot actually compared Barghest’s Black Dog Form in LB6 to the Cath Palug they faced (yes, they faced Cath Palug in a relatively strong state, though not quite Beast). So yes, he likely is a dog.
