A really, really awesome term for a vanguard is "The Forlorn Hope". It's actually a real life term for (from Wikipedia): "A forlorn hope is a band of soldiers or other combatants chosen to take the vanguard in a military operation, such as a suicidal assault through the breach of a defended position, or the first men to climb a scaling ladder against a defended fortification, or a rearguard, to be expended to save a retreating army, where the risk of casualties is high". I came across it in Robert Holdstock's absolutely fantastic mythic novels Mythago Wood and Lavondyss and I thought it was just a cool term he invented, but I recently discovered it was a real life one. Also his books are chock full of ideas because they're basically about a forest (Ryhope Wood) in 1950 England which created beings formed from archetypes from the collective unconsciousness of myths. And the main characters journey into it and encounter various myths come to life from the British Isles from pre-Roman times all the way back to back to Neolithic times. (Like King Arthur, Robin Hood, Herne the Hunter, Cúchulainn, the Green Man etc) They combine very realistic details with gritty mythic fantasy. Quite unique and different from most fantasy I've read.

When the party decides to attack someone or something it’s just accepted that the party is attacking someone. But when the party tries to fight someone and the person wins initiative it must look to those witnesses like the guy with the green beard just attacked these guys.

Sorry I have not been feeling well myself lately so set up on telly last night and the last bit I remember before "I rested my eyes" was you turning into a gold dragon and then opening them again a few hours later with DD special on how the Wizard class is one of the most powerful in the game and something about an OP spell? I'm a Dwarven Fighter so not into magic and gone way past the 1st stage in Baulders Gate 3 without even finding this Wizard guy "still on my 1st playthrough so not going back" haha. I'm now just half way through this now so thank you and thank you Kyle 👍

Also, if Wrath moves (even forced movement) he'll take additional cold dmg 52:40 - The women who was smearing dead fish on the stones is actually a fish folk. She hits wrath w/ her bone staff 28 dmg and he is bewildered (can only cast cantrips), she then teleports Wrath on top of the altar, taking 39 force damage and then 10 cold dmg as he is restrained by chains 56:11 - Rudy hits the fish folk women, who turns into sea mist, teleporting up to the altar. Rudy then hits Greenbeard twice (one is a crit) dealing 70 dmg 58:44 - Greenbeard then slashes at Rudy in retaliation for 20 dmg 59:13 - Bogden cast chain lightning on Rudy, Houdini, and Wilhelm (to bad his Dex save is trash now and he doesn't have evasion anymore). Houdini is is atomized, while Rudy saves taking 22 lightning dmg, Wilhelm fails taking the full 45 dmg (should have been a blue or bronze dragon) 1:00:46 - Dragon Wilhelm uses his frightful presence, Bogden and Greenbeard but Lomez (Romez?), the women/fish folk mutant is immune. He then snaps Lomez in his jaws and flies up 80 ft to drop onto the rocks below 1:04:18 - Round 2: Greenbeard misses all his attacks against Rudy thanks to shield and the disadvantage from frightful presence 1:04:57 - Lomez's ability doesn't recharge and she can't teleport far enough to avoid falling damage, so she tries to attack Wilhelm missing both times 1:05:36 - Rudy continues to attack Greenbeard, hitting three times for 72 dmg. This was such a small part of the episode that didn't even matter, but I'm gonna push back a little on the water bit. Yeah, jumping into water is dangerous and fatal at a point, but you're not reaching that point at the same time as jumping onto rock. If we're at 80ft (the height initially discussed in game), that's a high but manageable cliff jump or dive into water. I know people getting dropped probably aren't going in with proper form, but they probably aren't going to belly flop and sustain the full brunt of an injury either

"Everything is crab". Jill stumbled upon a big meme in the ecology community where the "crab-like" body plan has evolved on 5 or 6 separate occasions. Look up carcinization and see for yourselves. Funny enough, hermit crabs aren't crabs or one of the crustaceans with a similar body plan, so "everything is crab" doesn't apply to them. They're perfect as is lol

With their most recent level Joe took True Polymorph for Wrath and turned Wilhelm into an Adult Gold Dragon which lasts even through Long Resting until Wilhelm drops to zero hp. If he drops to zero he will turn from being dragon Wilhelm back to just normal Fighter/Rogue Wilhelm but for now he doesn’t have any of his normal class features and instead fully uses the stat block for Adult Gold Dragon in the meantime.

Monty is waaaaay too cheap with the healing potions and this has been going on since day one! It's ridiculous especially since they have no cleric. This is a major flaw in the campaign.

Ok, I'm trying to understand this combat. As far as I can tell, the guy with the green beard, out of nowhere just attacked the party. The way initiative works in DnD is weird. I choose to attack this guy out if nowhere…. Roll initiative, ok, so you are standing there and the guy with the green beard attacks you ! Let me repeat what just happened. Out of nowhere the guy with the green beard attacks you! Did i feserve to be attacked. No you did nothing to earn an attack from this guy. This guy with the green beard, attacked you out if now where, did i attack him first? Nopehe just attacked you.

To be fair, a few threats had been bandied around from both sides. Green beard dude was just faster to draw his weapon when the time came. It was hardly out of nowhere. Another example of that sort of thing was Greedo making threats and Han shooting first when both of them had hidden weapons in hand. And you can't convince me Han didn't shoot first, I saw that movie during the theatrical release.

I always DM this kind of scene as the party reaching for their weapons / begin incanting a spell, but the enemy reacts quicker. So even though that party imitated the combat, the npc goes first

Gotta think of it more as rolling for initiative being the equivalent of everyone reaching for their weapons or preparing to do whatever their next action is. Highest initiative is simply the person fastest to the draw. Only time I would say someone was truly caught unawares after initiative is rolled is if the person going first is an assassin rogue or if they’re attacking with surprise

Remember that d&d isn't a simulator type game. If you think of checkers as the lowest resolution "fight between two sides" game, then chess is a slightly higher resolution version that represents the real world with slighly more detail . If you keep increasing the resolution way, way higher you eventually come to something like d&d and because it's also a rpg it has to balance a lot of additional factors like keeping it fun & not allowing instant kills (like so many things will do irl) because that would just such to play if your beloved character that you've invested a year into just had their throat cut and died in 1 second. Also tbf anyone involved in this battle would have to be really, really dumb to not be expecting a fight to break out any second.
