I was a casual fan until I saw them live opening for Dream Theater during the “Awake” and “Monument” tour. I was completely sold. Mark Zonder, who played drums for them at that time, I felt was more impressive technically than Mike Portnoy. However, that was one helluva show by both bands. FW kinda got pushed aside by Dream Theater through the years but I’m glad FW continues to write great music utilizing their own unique brand and approach to progressive rather than trying to be another DT clone.

@@gudalpesanz Nah, not even close to the last of his kind. He's great but there are loads out there that still do only singing. I love screams/guttural vocals being a huge fan of metalcore, death metal and post-metal, but man, there are so many singers out there that do this sort of thing. Right off the top of my head, I could name quite a few. Roy Khan, Tommy Karevik, Jorn Lande, Tobias Sammet, Michael Kiske, Matt Smith (Theocracy), James LaBrie, Andy Kuntz, Daniel Tompkins, the list goes on. There are still plenty of metal bands that rely on singing only, it's just that a lot of metal today involves the heavier stuff.

The difference between FW and the others prog bands is melancholy. Fates Warning talks about time passing, about people we lose, about the lost of illusions...Deeper thoughts. Perhaps that's why they didn't meet the success they deserve.

You confess a lot of things But you confess alone The absense of a person brings The burning question home The nights are long, they turn to days And sleep is not a friend The voices though you hear them sing Are only in your head And you have not begun to fight It slowly takes a toll The burden of the little thing Will never make you whole I understand that feeling of dread, you're used to it And thos empty promises are just the same When our time had come to end, it's over then It's over then, it's over The light and shade of things The light you held is gone And although people change I know it can't be far The light and shade of things And I can't understand How one is more important Than the other You're nowhere now, you're nowhere now I know that it's hard to find A heart that's there inside It's hard to find your heart now Forget falling down, forget all that you've been It's time to face those broken promises Oh, burn the past, this thing has to end I wish that it felt strange that you feel nothing The light and shade of things The light you held is gone And although people change I know it can't be far The light and shade of things And I can't understand How one is more important Than the other You're nowhere now, you're nowhere now I know that it's hard to find A heart that's there inside It's hard to find your heart now Some roads are empty Some roads just go on And though you may walk alone, my friend I know it won't be long It's not over, not over yet I know you can remember when You gave away you heart in your hand It's not over then, it's not over I know, your heart is there It's there inside

Fates Warning SHOULD be playing bigger venues and Theatres, more known and recognized for all they have contributed to Metal music progressing, and they have been pounding the pavement since 1984. But . . . . its WE Fans that keep them alive and relevant, trying to spread the word of these Fathers of PrOg Metal. I "hope" I'm able to see them with their co-fathers QR in LA. This is one of my all time fave songs, and as a fan, pure emotion that hits you in the soul, and enough aggression to make you headbang. Every album is a masterpiece \m/.

I had the privilege of seeing them live on their Pleasant Shade of Gray tour in 1997. FW always knows how to put on an exquisite, polished, and soul-filled live performance. I swear that Ray's voice continues to get better with age. Yeah -- he doesn't hit those crazy-high notes like in the 80s and 90s, but his vocals are always spot-on and rich in a live setting.
