When DeGarmo left, everything changed. But what a band till then. Incredible musicianship and songwriting. I love the Operation and Empire albums and I often still go back to them, and Im 67 now. @@purplekat5864 Yes, when I think about them at that time which was their peak. I think they were all married or close to it and it seemed like a family operation. So, you get a song like "Jet City Woman" which is a love song dedicated to the women in their lives. I think that had lot to do with their professionalism backstage and how they conducted themselves, they were grounded. They were almost boring and not into the groupie thing. I also think that's why Chris left the band after the next album Promise Land. To raise a family.

@@shawnstarks1743 I agree with you totally. Those were the vibes I got when meeting them too. Also, interesting that none of them had tattoos (except for that small Triryche Chris did himself on his upper arm), which was atypical for the metal scene. I loved how serious they were about the music, and that they weren't just in it for "fringe benefits". I really respect them, and I'm glad to hear that you worked closely with them and felt the same. ☺️

This is the only "Unplugged" session I've ever heard that I give any (personal) merit to. They re-arranged the tracks to sound as if they were meant to be this way, instead of playing the originals through acoustic guitars. "I Will Remember" is the highlight for me. I enjoyed QR up to "Hear in the Now Frontier" and the albums with Todd LaTorre, but this time period (and my fave album "Promised Land") was very special. It's a crying shame that Chris DeGarmo left the biz, he was a hell of a writer and guitarist. The Fathers of Prog Metal (along with my fave band *Fates Warning* who ended in 2023, but sadly didn't have the following Queensrÿche had) will not be forgotten in the progression of Metal. Been a fan since _before_ their debut EP was released. - Thank you soo much for uploading this!

@@saltpeter7429 Yeah :(. I was hearing word that this may have been their "Swan Song". But then I went to the "Dreamsonic" Tour earlier last year (Dream Theater, Animals As Leaders, Devin Townsend) at the KZbin Theatre (LA Forum), and their was a guy wearing the only other FW shirt at the show (for Theories of Flight Tour, mine; Awaken the Guardian), and we chatted for a bit, and it turned out he was a Roadie for a few tours and he told me Jim Matheos ended it in 2023. Like it says on their Wiki page; He just didn't have it in him to write songs for the band. I think that just happened out of frustration, ALL those albums, a catalogue of unique Prog Metal and they still played at small venues and clubs. Its hard to maintain their standards of music (and then the merch, paying their crew, touring, bills/expenses etc.) when you have a sea of various bands, and those that are newer getting all the attention/recognition. I don't blame him to seekout new projects. The last Tour I saw from them was "FWX" (2001), I can remember the Tour T's were horrible. They must've done that tour on a shoestring budget :(. I had no money to go see the next 2 tours. They were a band that didn't follow the formula. But I HOPE he at-least does a 3rd "Arch/Matheos" album. Jim & Ray have "North Sea Echoes", Ray's newer band "A-Z" with Mark Zonder on drums, and Jim's "Kings of Merica". I doubt we'll see another "OSI" album. I really really loved those last 3 albums from Fates Warning, it was like all their previous _sounds_ all rolled together.

I still recall the first time I heard this band in 1984 after their EP came out . Hear it thru my friend’s walkman. I didn’t give him back his walkman cause I herd it over and over

My dopey young ass didnt hear them until MINDCRIME. I was 9. Eyes of a Stranger got some rotation on Empty V. Definately a huge " Walkman" tape for me as well, bus rides to school, bored walks aimlessly around town etc...

Def on the top of their game there. Geoff Tate had great vocal accuracy (without modern pitch-correct) and the guys were musically very tight. Impressive stuff..

I watched this right after graduating high school and moving to Seattle in 1993. They were everything that was right about music at that time. No one could touch them in this genre in my opinion. So sad what they became. Goes to prove how fragile a perfect band can be, and how fleeting good songwriting is.
