Best option is to put enough solar on top of your camper where you can run AC for free during the day. That along with the propane option with the generator would be the perfect ticket for easy living while boon docking.

Love the idea ID of dual fuel, but Propane costs $4.25 /lb here in Tampa Bay Area. Gasoline is $3.21 / gal. At full load this gen burns ~40 lbs of propane per 24 hrs. At a cost of $170.00 per 24 hrs. Gasoline at full load burns about ~10 gal / 24 per hours at a cost of $33.00 and does not have 5-10% less output. Propane costs 5x as much to burn than gasoline and puts out 10% less energy. That math doesn’t work for me so I just use gas.
@BillAndersonNS
@BillAndersonNS Ай бұрын
One additional point you didn't mention: Ethanol does a lot of damage to high compression and small engines and it is almost impossible (at least in Canada) to find gasoline that does not have at least 10% ethanol and often the % is a lot higher. Converting to propane will probably extend the life of your small engine.

I watched that conversion video you mentioned years ago. I bought the Hutch Mountain tri-fuel conversion kit and installed it. I wanted a 30 lb tank from Northern Tools and found it cheaper to buy two 20-lb tanks; so for less money I have 40-lbs instead of 30. The advantages of propane are numerous, especially the safety factor. I've heard that if you run propane a lot, you still should run it off gas once in a while, but I can't remember the reason. Thanks for the tip concerning the spark plug.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound Ай бұрын
Nice! And I agree, propane is better in almost every way. And if for whatever reason you want to run it off gas you can do it with just the turning of a switch. It's super easy to switch back and forth between the fuels with this kit and that's one of the reasons it's so great. Glad you're loving your propane conversion too 😁

The biggest problem with using my Honda Generator is the gas going stale. I just spent $150.00 to service the unit because stale gas clogged the carburator. I don't use it very often so it is a big problem. I bought some synthetic gas to use as it won't go stale as quickly. It's a solution but very expensive. I'll check out the propane option, cheers.

you use stabilizer I assume? Because that keeps it good for up to a year. I make sure to run all the gas on the last use of the season. you can power a window ac during summer or an electric heater during winter to not waste it…

I'm in Canada, too. I own three chain saws and several generators that are allergic to even the smallest amounts of ethanol, let alone stale gasoline. Premium and Premium Plus high octane gas should be ethanol free. Don't bother to ask the gas station attendant, ask the guys at small engine repair shops, they know where to find good gas. Another rarely known problem is when you fill your jerry can, or what ever, at the pump with Premium gas you always end up with a certain amount of gas that was left in the hose from the previous person, regular or high octane, which is like playing russian roulette. Filling up at a gas station with a pump dedicated for Premium fuel is the safest way to get 'clean' fuel. You can also put a few liters into your vehicle, if gas powered, before putting the nozzle in the jerry can. When using fuel stabilizer, always pour the stabilizer in before adding the fuel. Some fuel stabilizers sit on top of the fuel preventing oxygen to get into the fuel while others mix with the fuel, do your research. Adding a tiny amount of 2 cycle engine oil to the fuel helps, too. I aim for 1%, give or take.

Thanks David, do you have a link for that spark plug? Also, I heard some rubber o rings in the carburetor need gasoline to keep them lubricated that propane’s doesn’t do.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound Ай бұрын
All I know is I haven't had any problems with dried up o-rings. If that's a concern for you just run gas in it once or twice a year. You can change between gas and propane by just turning a single switch with this kit. It's super simple. And here's the link for the spark plug: www.hutchmountain.com/products/propane-iridium-spark-plug-eu2000i-eu2200i-eu3000is-generators?variant=43775601311977

I have a new Honda 2200I ( to replace 1 of my 2000s with the intent of not needing both all the time) and Hutch Mountain easy start on a 13,500 gen. the problem is heat. According to both Honda & Hutch and my experience.. if its hot outside... the AC has to work harder and draws more and The generator is hot and works harder and produces less and over loads and shuts off on premium gas so even losing ANY power could be an issue. I've found ~ 90deg is the limit. even trying to shade the generator. with an amp meter, the AC alone - have to shut off EVERYTING draws 1700 watts. I even changed the fuel jet for higher elevation since most camping is above 1K ft. Elevation makes a HUGH difference on output of the generator

No, I don't use eco mode while running my AC regardless of whether I'm burning gasoline or propane. Honda recommends not using eco mode for large loads like that. And Hutch Mountain also sells an NGK iridium plug for $13, or you can pick one up from NAPA. I'm not sure what the part number is since I just order mine through HM and they come pre-gapped.

Is there an altitude limit running on propane after the conversion? I like camping at over 9000 feet in the summer.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound Ай бұрын
There's no limit to what elevation you can run propane, and like I showed in the video it's very easy to adjust the air/fuel mixture with the regulator on this conversion kit. Generators lose about 2-3% power output for every 1000' elevation and that will probably be on the higher end with propane. With that said, we've done plenty of camping above 9000' as well near Fish Lake in Utah and we've had no problems running this generator on propane and it still runs our AC no problem. This kit allows you to switch between gasoline and propane any time you want with just the turning of a switch, so if you notice power loss problems at high elevation, just use gasoline in those instances 👍

I bought a dual fuel generator thinking a factory engineered solution would be better than a conversion kit. It's not. The generator won't start (and barely runs) on a propane tank thats less than 1/3 full, and it has a weird electronic regulator that seems like it could be something that breaks. Of course I only paid $300 for the whole thing, so I guess I got what I paid for. Another benefit of propane is it's good for long term storage. I have a small generator to run my fridge at home in case of a power outage. I can keep a couple propane tanks and even if they sit full for years the fuel is just as good. With gas I'd have to rotate it through my cars, creating a chore every few months. After many years the tanks need to be recertified, or I can just exchange them for freah tanks.
