In Chile, in 1974, in a gathering of hundreds of people, a Jewish girl asks the Founder of Opus Dei about the Catholic faith.
I'm Jewish, but I believe in the Catholic religion. And I would like... my most fervent wish is to convert to Catholicism, but I am a minor, and my parents won't let me.
Look, I am going to tell you something that will make you very happy.
I - and I learned this from this son of mine... I must tell you that the first love of my life is a Jew: Jesus, Jesus of Nazareth - a member of your race!
And the second love of my life is Mary most holy, Virgin and Mother, Mother of the Jewish man
Jesus, and my Mother and your Mother.
Do you like that? And then, I must tell you to be very good toward your parents, to be patient, to pray.
Don't make any gestures of rebellion. Is that clear?
Yes, Father.
And the Lord of Nazareth, Jesus the Jew, Jesus the King of all hearts and all wills, will move your parents to let you follow calmly and serenely the path that you already have hidden in your soul,
that "vita abscondita cum Christo in Deo" [life hidden with Christ in God, cf. Col. 3:3].
Isn't that right?
Love your parents a lot. OK?
Yes, Father.
And in the meantime, go on learning the teachings of Jesus Christ, and pray. Pray, my daughter. You already have your baptism of desire. Pray. And never a word of criticism against your parents.
Because this is very clear: you have to love them with all your soul and show it with deeds. OK?
Yes, Father.
You will be a good daughter of Christ, if you are a good daughter of your parents.
Thank you.

I had a similar yet different situation. In 1975 when I was 15, I decided my heart belonged with the Catholic Faith, but out of respect for my Jewish parents, I postponed my conversion until I was 18. My father was a born Jew who I later found out secretly believed in Jesus as Messiah, and my mother converted to Judaism when she was 19 (from the Catholic Faith!) So I held off telling them for fear of hurting them, but in my mom's case, for a different reason. Many years later, I had the great honor of baptizing my father at his request, 2 days before he died...he died on the Feast of the Epiphany, which commemorates the baptism of Jesus. My mother returned to the Faith on the first day of Holy Week 2008 as she lay dying and received the Last Rites of the Church. Two odd things happened: as a child I used to ask my mom things about her childhood faith, and she said one thing she was always taught is that if a person dies during Holy Week, their sins are forgiven and they go straight to Heaven (its just a fable, but...) she died during Holy Week and she had no way of knowing when I was little, when she would die. She also used to claim that a nun told her that it always rains on Good Friday between the hours of 12 noon and 3 PM (the hours Christ hung on the Cross). Again, just a fable....and yet my entire life I would make it a point to prove her wrong, and I watched. It always rained on Good Friday during those hours, without fail, in our area. Except for the Good Friday after she died. It has not rained on Good Friday since. Despite her leaving the Faith (though she did return), Christ still honored her belief. +

Even though I'm Russian Orthodox , Father Josemaría Escrivá is obviously a holy man . I wish I had a small portion of his love for God , and our Holy Mother .
