Beautifully harmonized in the walls of an old stone cathedral, this is a pleasure to enjoy.

The story is that this was considerd the most beautiful piece of music ever written and it was forbidden to perfom it outside of the Vatican. Then 13 year old Mozart heard it on a visit to Rome and went home and transcribed it note for note from memory ....... and then it began to spread around European music circles. Probably apochryphal !

That is a myth and a fable, the piece was actually sung in London before Mozart ever visited the Vatican. It's a good story, and adds to the legend of the piece, but not a bit of it is true.

@@cuttlefishrampant5241it's not a fable: the young Mozart risked to be excommunicated, but the news arrived to the Pope, who awarded him with a high a high honour . Mozart himself took his transcription to London, where it was published. Previously, the Pope had made a gift of a copy of the score to the Emperor of Austria, but since the performances at the Vatican were enriched by embellishments performed by the Sistine Chapel Choir that were not on the score, the performance at the Austrian Court did not satisfy the Emperor. Mozart's transcription, on the other hand, was complete.

@@giovannipellegrini4694 it is a fake story. There's no such thing as risk of excommunion for something unrelated to public faith

Beautiful! There is something about good church music when sung in a large church or cathedral which makes you appreciate it even more.👏🏻👏🏻🐿️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I know everybody is impressed by the girl who hits the high c. Her name is Josephine Stephenson. But for me the guy who really kills it, is the one on the upper floor. I don't know if I have ever heard a more beautiful male voice!

He has such a wonderfully pure tenor! Those basses are remarkably good too though.

Nah, the woman’s voice is better than the boy’s voice. Do you see how weird that sounds? Let’s try again: I prefer the WOMAN’S voice and you prefer the MAN’S. OK? There are no children in in this video - just men and women.

So good to see you reacting to such beautiful, ethereal music. Tenebrae conducted by Nigel Short are just perfection.

That was beautiful. Many years ago I used to sing in a church choir (in my 20's) and from my experience the acoustics are so different when you sing in a larger church or cathedral and are more clearer and yes 'ethereal'/ 'angelic' sounding.

The beauty of this masterpiece comes also from the Latin language. Thre are few languages that can transport so much emotions, glory and power, as the Latin language does.

Written specifically for the Sistene Chapel. It's one if the psalms, not sure which one. The current arrangement is due to a mistake. The soprano section for the 4 singers was mistakenly transposed (those descending high notes should be an octave down) when copied in the 1800s. The arrangement proved popular and has been sung like this pretty much ever since. The solo Gregorian section is usually sung an octave lower but this version restores the original way it probably would have been sung.

Psalm 50 (51) "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your merciful love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions." Yes, it was a mistake. Felix culpa! My choir sings this every year at Holy Week. It is hard for me to maintain a steady voice as I find this psalm very moving. Truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed.

There is a video on youtube that documents how the structure this song ' Miserere mei, Deus ' changed vocally over the years . there are three main different versions ... ( this the most recent version ) ... AS in our modern times for example ' amazing grace ' added expressive vocal techniques ... From the old standard minimal basic notes to what we know today ,

This is why I share Tenebrae recordings of sacred pieces with people who are unfamiliar with this classic music. May he spread this impossible gift to all his audience.

I had a conversation with a friend about Christian music. I told him that I would put up the Allegri Misere Mei against the total of 19th and 20th century contemporary Christian music, and admit that it was an unfair fight.@@jerryh2511
