I remember reading a Nancy Drew book (one of the newer ones) where their town does a Civil reenactment. People were going crazy which side their family was on (fairly half and half). However Nancy and all the other women were allowed to fight (though I think Bess decided to be a nurse).

There were always isolated instances of women taking up arms. Most of them were disguised as men for obvious reasons. One Eleonore Prochaska served in the Prussian Freikorps under the name August Renz. She was mortally wounded in the battle at Göhrde in 1813. Her true identity was discovered when another soldier tried tending to her wounds. She died three weeks later in the City of Dannenberg. Also regarding the scene, the father of the girl was making a point to his reenactment colleague. His dedication to historical accuracy seems to end at the point when someone starts yelling at his daughter (good on him).
