Hey Brother I had a question for you on Luke 9:56. My Pastor just preached for the ESV and it removes like half of the verse. What is the manuscript evidence for the KJV reading. He said it isn't much but I don't believe that. However I can't read Greek or really dig into that much. But the TR reading is very important and the meaning of the passage is totally changed if it is not in there. I wanted to get your thoughts on it because you deal with this a lot more than I do. Hope you have a good Lord's Day!

Hey brother. The manuscript evidence is fairly split, so it really comes down to which sources rank as most authoritative. The sections are absent in two early papyri, Aleph, Vaticanus, the old Latin, the Syriac, the Coptic, and some of the Byzantine manuscripts. However, even Bruce Metzger notes that "the longer readings in verses 55 and 56 had fairly wide circulation in parts of the ancient church." (Textual Commentary 1st Edition, pg.148) So once again, it really comes down to methodology. In this case, the evidence being split, even more so. Are some of these oldest witnesses best or are some of those other oldest witnesses best? From a purely evidential point of view (which I don't accept, obviously), you can go either way. Hope that helps! God bless you this Lord's Day as well.

@@DaneKristjan So it is in a lotof Byzantine manuscripts right? I believe it is scripture and again you and Taylor had a big role in bringing me back to the TR. Just want to make sure u have my ducks in a row when I talk to my pastor on this passage.

@@BibleFanatics Amen. Metzger himself stated that it had wide circulation even in the early church, and the NA28 marks the "addition" as "permulti", which means that the majority of manuscripts are split. Maybe your pastor was oversimplifying or simply going off of someone else's words, but there is certainly more support than "not very much". Evidentially, you could go either way. The Robinson-Pierpont Bzyantine Greek text has the passage in the main text for what its worth.

@@DaneKristjan Yeah we go back and forth about the TR and Critical text, all done charitably, we rib each other more than anything haha. I appreciate that brother it is very insightful and interesting that the majority text platform retained it. Praise God, However that he saw fit to preserve it!

@@BibleFanatics amen! In devotions with my wife and I use our RHB study Bibles! I have not had the chance to use the MEV much. I don't actually think I own a copy! I need to remedy that.

@@DaneKristjan That is cool to hear! How do you all do family devotions. I try to do something every night with my family, but it's not structured. Once you get a copy I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the MEV!

@@BibleFanatics amen. Read the article in the RHB on "Family Worship", it lays out a rational and structure for family worship. With our whole family, we sing a short psalm/hymn, then I read a short adapted Bible story, then I ask the children adapted catechism questions (they are all under 5yo), then my oldest son prays, then I pray, and then we close by singing the doxology. When all goes according to plan it lasts about 10 minutes. After the kids go to bed, my wife does her daily reading in my office out of her RHB study Bible. When she finishes I usually grab my own RHB and we discuss what she read (using the questions at the end of the chapters) then pray together, and sometimes sing a psalm.
