I’m 68 yrs old certified welder for 40 yrs.,,,,,a little advise if I may with your cutting torch! You can over power the cutting tip which will give you a sloppy looking cut. When you fire your torch and adjust valves the torch should not sound like a jet. Adjustable tour oxygen so that the blue feathers are short and dark blue. When you mash the oxygen trigger you should not hear a jet but a little louder than a whisper. Your cuts will look more like they were cut with a band saw. The slag on the back side of your cut can be bumped off not hammered off with your chipping hammer. Awesome craftsmanship and pride in your metal fabrication! Enjoyed your video!

@@fathersondiygarage3580if you haven't ran 6010 or 6011 practice on something first before you weld on your project they hard to run about one of the best welding rods you can get is 7018 all so if you still have the lincoln buzz box if it is ac only 6010 will not work on your welder you will use have to use 6011 because 6010 is dc only and 6011 is ac or dc ps love your videos

Good build. However. for a smoker it is essential that you can access the food on the grates. Grate slides on the top and bottom is a game changer. it lets you access the meat and spay and rotate. let the bottom and top grates slide out for access

Looks amazing. I'm curious, when buying second hand steel, how do you make sure the pipe or whatever steel piece has not been used in something that could in some way make it not food safe? Or how do you make sure the steel hasn't a coating that could be not food safe? I ask because buying second hand seems tempting but what makes me doubt about this idea is related to food safe.
@fathersondiygarage358011 ай бұрын
When we find the steel we ask the owner what it was previously used for. When we get it home, we pressure wash and sand blast it. Definitely a lot cheaper than buying the steel brand new but it does require a lot more work.

that welding table is super bowed. nothing straight about that weld up. Also why not bolt the casters on. Welding them seems overkill and hard to replace if one of the casters fails. Should definitely clamp materials that your grinding especially after freshly plasma cutting them. You could say goodbye to junior or open that femoral artery very quickly if your not careful. You also want to be wearing a respirator when welding stainless due to hexavalent chromium gas venting that could occur during stainless welds. Also, it's probably a better idea to remove the rust before you start welding. you should also weld a dam across the bottom of the fire box throat so grease doesn't run into the fire box and start a grease fire that ruins your cook.

Best way start ANY long and complicated project build is to first give a tour of it, and show how it works, then show the build. Don't wait to the end to explain how it all works - that's just wrong. Not in a 45 minute long vid, anyway!!!

"80 hours worth of work". Yeah, that's a lot of work, but consider this: that smoker is going to last a long, long time. So if you are into metal working, building one is worth 80 hours easily imo.

I just don't know why people make bases with such thick steel. 2-3mm thick can carry 100's of kg's, especially if you have a square as to stop bowing. Save your money et thinner steel for the base, then use that to get good wheels and hinges rather.
