When you’re insulin resistant i.e. you have metabolic syndrome, pretty much every chemical in the body is NOT QUITE RIGHT. Some are up. Some are down. Few are actually at physiologically NORMAL levels.
Traditionally the focus is on the big guns.
• Insulin
• Sugar
• And cholesterol
In this series, we’ll take a look at some of the other players.
Who they are, what they’re up to and how they’re part of the state of insulin resistance.
In this video, instead of looking at a specific chemical, we look at the state of being, of your liver.
And in a word, it’s full of FAT.
Which creates a huge amount of angst and quite possible, is creating many of the paracrine and endocrine functional changes, that are making you INSULIN RESISTANT.
Now contrary to what you might think……..
The extra fat is NOT because of too much fat, in your diet, per se.
The fat is accumulating, because the normal fat flux, which moves fat, in and out of the liver, is jammed. Un-jamming this, is the key to overcoming fatty liver. In this video, we explore the options.
Here are the links to the videos, mentioned during this video.

If methyl groups are required, would that mean that those with an MTHFR mutation would be more prone to fatty liver?

The research on the topic is conflicting i.e. some studies say yes, some say no. I think the answer is, it depends…….. the resource that is needed is choline. You can get choline from your diet or you can make it. If you make it, you need methyl groups and a weakness, in this department, will make you more vulnerable, to choline shortages, should you diet not be adequate. Who is who in the gut zoo, is also a factor. NOTE : How well you make it depends on a couple of other things : your estrogen status and the version of another gene, PEMT (phosphethanolamine methyl transferase).

I’m no physician but I can tell you what has helped ME. Cut out alcohol.. COMPLETELY. Cut out processed foods. Cut out sugar, and artificial sweeteners (as they also trigger insulin release). INTERMITTENT FASTING!!!! One meal a day with no empty calories is optimal… or a 20/4 schedule of eating.. even a 16/8 is beneficial. That said, I’m a doofus, and when I get feeling fantastic and really lean, flat stomached, I backslide and “treat myself” to milkshakes, or other undesirable intakes that set me back. Constantly triggering your body to process sugar and carbohydrates diminishes your fat burning metabolism which makes the liver less efficient and a storage vessel for fat. But I sure do love ice cream and milkshakes. It really takes devotion and strong will to stay on track.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Agree knowing what to do and doing it, is not always easy. My nemesis is chocolate.

I've been researching since adolescence about my hypoglycemia. I feel hypoglycemic but when I check my blood sugar it is normal. I recently started getting brain fog when I eat histamine food. I'm almost 60 years old and I think I have histamine intolerance or cell mast activation syndrome. I have read that these conditions can lead to insulin resistance. I read that histamines affect cytokines which affect blood sugar. My doctors don't know what is going on with me. I'll keep watching videos and reading. I have also read that ginger helps with histamine intolerance. I eat low carb and low histamine and I exercise (take walks) when I'm not feeling brain fog. Should I eat less butter? I indulge in butter on my vegetables because I don't react to it because it is not a histamine food I don't think.

So sorry to hear of your health struggles. I don't know very much about histamine intolerance and if you search the big medical data bases, there is nothing linking histamine to insulin. Easiest way to know if you are dealing with insulin resistance is to take a look at other "symptoms". A feeling of being ""hypoglycemic"after a meal is not one of them. High blood pressure, big belly, high triglycerides, high sugar and low HDL are the typical markers.

This is my theory on fatty liver, metabolic syndrome/high blood pressure and kidney damage ... I adopted Dr. Lustig's and Dr. William Davis' way of looking at fat. I think Dr. Patrick may even view fat as inflammation rather than unspent/stored calories. Seeing the culprit of weight gain as under metabolized sugars caught in the liver and kidney capillaries, the cause of insulin resistance, you can treat it by cutting off the supply of sugar. That's Dr. Lustig's approach to weight loss, through metabolic cleaning. Dr. Davis has the same metabolic cleaning with cutting out wheat. Both fructose corn syrup and wheat are high on the glycemic index and when metabolized leave fine particles suspended in LDL-b cholesterol. The particles don't dissolve all the way so they get caught in capillaries of the liver causing backup. Same with the kidneys, diagnosed as hypertension/high blood pressure. I'm no doctor and I may have missed something in the lectures but that's my interpretation and I'm sticking to it because I've lost 35 lbs by cutting out sugar and wheat.

Agreed..... cutting out refined carbs makes a big difference to your body chemistry. Congrats on your weight loss.
