That piece of fatwood you wound up with could last 10 years or more, lighting a fire everyday. Use the scraper from your fero rod and get a little pile of "Maya Dust" the size of a quarter and hit it with a spark. Fire!! Brian from Survival on Purpose has been using the same piece of fatwood for about 10 years now, and still has some left. It lays on the ground in his backyard. The resin (Turpene) makes it waterproof. Thanks again. I enjoy your videos.

I used to use a hatchet, but after getting my Corona saw at Lowes I left the hatchet in the car. If you are not sure you have fatwood, just smell it. Fatwood smells just like Pinesol. Also, fatwood will not float in water. Sinks like a rock. But leave fatwood in water a week, take it out, and it will take a flame and burn right away. Amazing stuff, it is fun to find/harvest, and it is FREE! Thanks for a well done video.

Here in Northwest Oregon, I look for old rotten Douglas fir stumps that the loggers left behind. The fatwood doesn't rot so it is easy to locate and harvest. The best fatwood is in the roots if you can get to them.
