Rory On Air - Less distance available in the glide but more options available in the event of an engine-out because you can autorotate into something as small as a tennis-court. Swings and roundabouts, as the saying goes. I shot a couple of practice approaches to a rugby-pitch in my gyro a few weeks ago and my friend captured some decent footage of my low-passes (I’ll send you a link in FB Messenger).

After our brief discussion on your previous video, I did have to laugh when the ground-station said, “Stop calling yourself ‘student’”. I bet you knew I was going to comment on that, didn’t you? ;) Oh... and the term I was trying to remember for a newly-qualified/low-hours pilot is TYRO, not TYCO. @RoryOnAir4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian - glad you enjoyed it. Yes, he did ask me to stop using student but I couldn’t hear him until the second attempt. I guess it’s slightly quicker if I don’t as it shortens my callsign. It’s entirely correct for controllers to shorten it as per CAP413 once they know I’m a student on a solo.

@RoryOnAir4 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, thanks for the comment. I am careful not to overfly a settlement in a way that would not enable me to glide clear but it's sometimes hard to judge and your experience may well tell you that I'm not leaving myself enough wiggle room. I do try to be cautious but we are also trying to practice heading hold nav techniques and if we deviate it becomes a track crawl and not as much use to practice. Safety must come first obviously but that's another consideration I have on trips like this. Thanks for watching!

Great vlog again, thank you. You seem really comfortable with the radio but I’d feel really intimidated talking to ATC, do you ever feel that? @RoryOnAir4 жыл бұрын
Robin Floyd hi Robin - I’m delighted you enjoyed it. I don’t feel intimidated but I do feel the pressure to get it right so as not to embarrass myself. I also know that others watch my videos and copy what I do so I want to get it as right as possible so as not to spread bad habits! That’s my own fault for starting this channel though. As for grumpy ATCOs, I think we’re lucky in the UK to have a patient squad of too operatives who are willing to help and not get frustrated. Maybe it’s worse in the USA but I haven’t been made to feel like a wally by a controller yet. It’s practice and confidence really.

@RoryOnAir4 жыл бұрын
Makey Bakey yes, you only use student when you are a solo student pilot and you can drop it when then controller does first, just like with a shortened call sign. We have been told to use it on every call around Leicester as it’s a radio AG.

Why stop calling yourself student? That seems like a strange request from a rather unhelpful controller. Student let's him know you are a student solo? Never heard this before. I'm not sure how omitting the word student would make any difference to "speeding things up" like he wants.. nice video.

I would assume that after the first call the controller is aware that they're a student so repeating it isn't really necessary
