For the problem of long term use of silicone you mentioned (29:11) my solution is to put them in a ziploc bag and keep them in the fridge. I can use even the smallest tubes of silicone for many years this way. I keep my cyanoacrylates and even marine wood glues fresh for very long this way.

You just did that farmer a massive favor, no McHale dealership would even look at that. they would tell him to buy a new one which cost many thousands. Baler and wrapper controllers fail often and repairs are extremely pricey. Replacing an old eprom is over 500$ here. Great job!

Thanks 👍I've done a few other jobs like this as I know a few farmers. One was another bale wrapper controller with a shorted protection diode as the power had been connected up wrong and another was a mower arm controller that did things randomly. That one turned out to be dry joints on the mosfets going to the solenoids 🙂

My "go-to" for a repair like where you used the superglue and Gorilla glue is UV-cured resin. You can get it all around and the part situated in place and then in a matter of seconds, cure it with the UV LED. No long wait time, no cure time, pretty easy. Love watching your videos!!!

Hi! Got a decent brand of resin? Right now I'm using UV cure nail polish for solder mask and it is pretty meh (good enough for solder mask but not much else). Wasn't sure about the actual resins so I'd like a place to start :) I have my 3d printer resin but I'd like something that dispenses more controllably.

On watching the same segment, I was thinking that a ring of stainless steel mesh or wire wool fibres plastic welded to the area supporting the e-stop button would have made a more robust repair. Resin sounds much simpler, though. That said, another great video from what for me is one of the best channels out there.
@topc5826

Try adding some hot staple welding staples to add structural stability and then UV resin, The stainless steel wire secures the crack from expanding and strengthens and adds a stop check on the crack. There is also techniques to weld using similar plastic material like you would use when welding metals with metal welding rods.

Great fix! Silicone open tubes preserve well by running all air out, then seal opening with celophane and cut cap. Store standing up with tip in air at comfortable room temp. Stores well for about 2 or 3 months. Silicone does not have a long shelf life even when not open and this is why you can find it on sell sometimes.

Hi, I always look forward to your videos. you would think if an electronic device is meant to be outside it would be at least waterproof. a little tip, for silicone adhesive I started 25+ years ago taking a lit candle and warm the area with the lid on and drip wax around the lid until a seal has been made between the tube and lid. this works very well. I also use it on my used tubes of calk by cleaning the tip and dribble the hot candle wax in the hole. Rich

@@BuyitFixit Unless they went for a full conformal coating over important parts. Washing machines typically have lots of potted circuits. But taxing farmers is farm equipment manufacturing 101. If the name had been "John Deere" then nobody would've questioned the intent. Others can still plead ignorance. But yes, TBF, it could've been a design oversight, as one doesn't bale hay in the rain (or when wet). Wet hay spoils. At least in Murica.

Great job! I enjoy your videos. Very informative and educational. May I make a suggestion? There is a plastic repair tool you should add to your toolbox for something like the emergency cutoff switch repair. Have you seen the hot staple plastic welding tool? It looks like a soldering gun, but has two small tubes that hold a hot staple, 0.08 or 0.06 mm, in various shapes like wave, straight, inside corner, outside corner, that you insert the two ends into the tubes, which makes a circuit like an tungsten light bulb, and you press and melt the staple into the plastic across the crack. Then snip off the ends and grind down the stubs. You can also use a flat curved tip on a soldering station and cut various shapes from metal screen, like window screen, or use precut patches of brass screen and other types of metal screen and dimensions of the weave, smaller or larger. You can melt the screen into the plastic. For example, cut out a circular piece for the switch repair, cut the center out of the screen patch to fit over the switch leaving enough screen to cover the area of the crack and melt it into the plastic with a hot flat tip iron. or you could connect the hot melt staple gun's two contacts using stainless steel wire to the patch and heat up the patch weaved wiring directly. There are many video contents to view to get better ideas of how to DIY your own hot stapling plastic repairs. My first attempt was a large crack down the center of my John Deere garden tractor and you would never know it was split down the center of the hood, but just a long scratch.

@@BuyitFixit have you tried the aluminum foil tape? The kind used for air conditioning ducts. That is what I use. In a pinch two layers of regular tinfoil works also. You have to scrape all the rtv off the end of the threaded portion of the tube. It seems the moisture in the air will wick through RTV so that it will cure in the tube. guess that is a necessary property for gaskets to set. By the way, I am always impressed with the thoroughness, and logic used in your fixes of unfamiliar equipment. You are a diagnostic guru!

When glueing plastics, I always first check if it's dissolvable by acetone, or rather MEK (methylethylketone). If it is (ABS, PVC etc) I find the bond stronger if I partly dissolve both surfaces and glue it that way (chemical welding), rather than using a glue that works on basis of adhesion only.

29:27 The acetic acid silicone needs air to cure. Common is to drive a screw into the tip and let it seat into some silicone coming out the tip. Then, usually, can still use once remove screw. Will see goo on screw threads if you sealed at the tip+fluted neck. Alternative/Extra, use one of those giant Ziplocks to store the caulk. Air intrusion can happen from the pushing disc. I never tried, but theoretically, keeping the tube submerged in water would prevent/greatly retard any curing of caulk. .... TL:DR Atmosphere is the enemy of acetic cure silicone caulk for storage.

Great video. What is the intended use of the battery? What data is stored? Does the user determine the data that should be stored?

I bought an expensive paint thickness meter as used on cars , used it once , the next time i went to use it the leak proof batteries had leaked ever so very slightly, cleaned everything up no joy. took the cover off and checked for battery voltage on the board to eastablish if connectors worked, that was the end of my expertise, as mentioned it was pretty expensive and would love to have it working again, cant bring myself to bin it , is it something you would like to help with Best regards

@@kevamor I normally do, but depends on the cause of the corrosion. Vinegar for alkaline, baking soda for something caused by lead acid battery for instance. This was just mainly oxidized from water.
