Hi Vince, it was me who sent this item to you. I saw it on eBay and I paid £15 with postage. It was described as having no power. I was hoping it wasn't just the on/off switch. I had it sent straight to you to save more postage costs. Thought it would make a good fix it video. Also thought if you got it working, the kids could drive you nuts with it later on. I'm pleased you didn't mind me doing this and also pleased you made the video.

Ohhh OK, so the sender was the eBay seller. Oh well I thanked Raj but I should have been thanking you Flying Mower. It all makes sense now😂 Nice one for sending it over. I was also worried it was going to be the on/off switch but I think it made for an interesting fault, luckily it was more challenging but not too hard. I will pin this comment. That was great! With the voltage regulator I think you made the right call in the end. On that datasheet it looks like the original one is a BL8503-40 so that would be a fixed 4.0V output. Voltage regulators are set up to always have a fixed voltage output, so generally a 4.0V regulator would always output 4.0V no matter whether a 5.0, 6.0 or 7.0V (or higher) input, you only need to worry about not going beyond the limits of the specific regulator. And a minor point is needing to have a bit of differential between input and output so for a 4.0V output regulator you'd normally need minimum a 4.5V or 5.0V input for it to have something to work with. Again it depends on the exact regulator. Anyway, they probably used the regulator here to lower the battery voltage to a safe level for the chips so 5.0V output could well have been too high!
@Mymatevince2 жыл бұрын
Nice one, I thought they might just step down the voltage to a % under a range of input voltage. I didn't realise that they have a fixed output. Thank you 👍👍👍
@MrMaxeemum2 жыл бұрын
@@Mymatevince The output should be 3.0V according to the datasheet for the regulator shows 4V input (Minimum) and 3V output (this allows the batteries to run from 6v down to 4V before the output is affected) I was screaming at my screen when you used the 5V regulator, I then took a great sigh of relief when you swapped it for the 3.3v although it's higher by 10% it should be ok but I would still swap it for a 3.0V version.
@BuyitFixit2 жыл бұрын
@@Mymatevince Generally the last two digits are the voltage output like a 7805 (5v regulator) 7905 (-5v regulator) 7812 (12v regulator) etc, so I'd expect a 8503 to be a 3v regulator. Well done on another successful fix.

Nicely done Vince. It is always satisfying to fix something when the components only cost 20-30p a piece. I fixed a TV a few months ago, the component I already had in my stock with a value of around 10cents (EURO), which was an IR receiver for the remote control. The client thought the actual remote handset was at fault. Fixing it as an amateur really put a grin on my face, a nice feeling and prevent things going to the landfill so quickly.

Interesting fix, it’s funny how just one little component killed the whole thing. I enjoy fault finding too, and you always hope it’s not something simple. Some things take a lot of time but when you finally fix it, it was all worth it.

You had me on the edge of the seat Vince! I was here saying "No! Don't use the 5 volt regulator! Use a 3.3 volt one!" and was glad to watch through...what a relief! Now with some more broken musical instruments that could be fixed there seems to be a band forming up... Those piezo things are there to sense vibration and strikes to the drum pads hence the sensitivity and velocity/hardness sensitivity (if such kit does have that!) So the LDO (yes it actually is) that was originally in there is a CMOS part (known for low idle power consumption but a bit fragile on high current applications) in a tiny package (cannot dissipate the heat well)...must have heated up and died out that way. Personally it is not worth getting that same exact LDO for a replacement only to fail once more...I would have used a fixed-voltage 108x (1084, 1085) or jig an LM317 on there! 3.3v seems to be the ideal spot for that blob chip. 4 volts is a bit of an oddball, maybe conversion to 3.3 seems to lay burden on the regulator considering input voltage so raise it up...Or to account for droop when the batteries get weak. Remember that as input-output voltage differential increases the current capacity drops down too

Excellent video. I had the exact same issue with my e piano and my ultrasonic bath. In both of them the 3.3V regulator has failed. I have no bench power supply, so I took 3.3V from an ATX power supply. I think these regulators are often undersized and likely to fail. So I love the fact you replaced it with a bigger one, I wish I did so either but I took it from another board and now I can wait for it failing again 😂
