It's mostly not in the tongue, but in the placement of your lower jaw. Open your mouth a little so your upper and lower teeth aren't touching, bring the lower jaw back a TINY bit, relax the tip of your tongue to rest on the gumline just behind your top front teeth, then imitate the sound of a car engine. They'll go faster or slower by adjusting the amount of air you're blowing out while you're doing this. Replicating is a LOT easier if you practice by making it sound like you're revving up/down and shifting gears. - Source: years of studying different languages, but probably more from unconsciously making the sound effects whenever I'm telling someone a story.

The way I've very easily managed to teach it to my best friend (though this was in person, so mileage may vary with me just typing it out without being able to show it) was to tell him not to actually focus on making it sound like an R right away, but first focus on achieving the trill sound you need your tongue to make, and to learn that you first just do a big long sigh, then without stopping the sigh try to lightly push the tongue against the roof of your mouth while keeping the tongue flat/wide. Don't start with your tongue alrdy against the roof, only start trying to push it up while doing the sigh, and keep the sigh going. The air from the sigh that is pushing through between the roof of your mouth and your tongue while doing this is what causes the tip of the tongue to vibrate on it's own, and that is how you achieve the trill effect you need to roll your R's, and then it's just a matter of actually using your voice alongside that to turn that trill into an actual R sound

Rolling R is simply a matter of force and resist your tongue (resistance) against the top of your mouth so it closes the center from air escaping through there (you mainly need the tip at the top since thats whats gonna cause the rolling effect, the rest of your tongue can be shaped however you want so long as it helps close the center) then you exhale (force) against your tongue. Exhale the air mainly through through the center, pushing against your tongue (dont just blow or the air simply comes from your cheeks on its way out.) Doing so will push the tip of your tongue, exert some resistance on your tongue so the tip tries to force its way back while still exhaling this will cause the tip to bounce back and forth and essentially making the roll The more resistance you apply on the tongue the harder you gotta exhale the less resistance then the softer you exhale its a matter of balancing it out so the tip can bounce back and forth for the roll to happen apply more resistance than force and the air will force its way out from your cheeks apply more force than resistance and you get what Fauna struggled with, where the tongue couldnt make its way back so you just get a rough sound of air pushing through

For english speakers who want to try to roll your R’s, don’t use the tongue muscle to create vibrations. It doesn’t work that way. Blow a wind from your throat while pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth, you’ll notice that your tongue vibrates when you do this, from here adjust your tongue positioning.
@Sobepome9 ай бұрын
It's easier when you realize rolling your Rs is a repeated D sound while you make the r sound in the back of your mouth. Say a word that starts with D and think about how you are making the D sound.

Lightly place the tip of your tongue on the "hump" on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth, but leave a gap between your tongue and the hump. Now open your mouth slightly and pout your lips very slightly. Now breath out through your mouth like the exhale after a deep breath while imitating the "R" sound. The key is to keep your tongue super relaxed and try to direct the exhaled air at the gap between your tongue and hump. The "rolling r sound" is exhaled air that makes the tongue vibrate/oscillate against the roof of your mouth by basically making it "flap in the wind" if that makes sense lol. Try playing around with how much you pout the lips and mouth gap. It's really similar to how whistling works actually.

@TimWngn9 ай бұрын
@@cry9438 Yeah, but try closing your lips all together, it's nearly impossible. I was just trying to help people visualize how to direct the air and used whistling as the example, since a lot more people are probably familiar with and can relate to whistling. It might feel really natural to you and me, but is REALLY unnatural and hard to visualize for others.
