I have a feeling they appreciated Snail's name, too, since it's a departure from the names they hear all the time at the office. Just like with very common child names, you're named that name to have 20 other students have the same first name as you.

In general cats typically get quirkier names than dogs. Dogs are “man’s best friend” and therefore are called by human names typically. Cats however are just a creature at times that it just feels right to call them wacky names.

Um, if Snail doesn't want to get in the carrier at home but doesn't want to leave the carrier outside of home, couldn't it just mean that he knows "getting in the carrier at home" means "leaving the house to go somewhere different/strange", so he wants to stay home as long as possible, but once he's outside, he knows that the fastest way to get back home is if he stays in the carrier? Alternatively, he could view it as relative preferences, where "everything at home" > "the carrier" > "everything outside"...
