Pill Swallowing Difficulty: Cause and Treatments (Pill Dysphagia)

Difficulty swallowing pills but not to foods and liquids is a very common complaint known as pill dysphagia. This condition is often due to a tighter than normal muscular valve at the top of the esophagus known as the cricopharyngeus muscle. Because the opening is tighter than normal, large pills often hang up in the throat leading to symptoms of the pill being stuck in throat sensation and even occasional choking or gagging. Further medical investigation of pill dysphagia often shows nothing physically abnormal. Rather, the muscle tightness is often due to mental factors like anxiety over pill swallowing. As such, treatment involves learning simple strategies to help swallow pills more easily. I just had a Paracetamol pill get stuck in my throat (still stuck, by the way), and I threw a tantrum. I chugged an insane amount of water, followed by eating a tomato. I even threw up twice after palpating my throat for the pill, and pieces of the tomato came out of my nose (ouch). I was just trying to get some pain relief so I could sleep peacefully.🥲👊

Thank the gods I’ve finally found my people. I’m 16 amd cant swallow a pill, but I currently have an ear infection and need to swallow it. Why not simply smash it into powder and then swallow it ? I once thought I was going to die because the pill stuck in my throat and I was freaking out if the epiglottis would flip up letting the pill into the airway. After I managed to finally swallow it minutes later, I could feel pain in my throat as if the pill was still inside. It was 8 years ago. I still suffer trauma, and I am in my late 20s. Also, I have always been the one finishing the meal last because I need to chew the food much longer than other people in order to be able to swallow it smoothly. There is a special perk to it: I get to enjoy food more.

Everything apart from you personal pill lodged experience I have felt! Last done eating and chewing meticulously. I believe my trauma stemmed from watching my dad almost die choking twice! Some pills you aren’t supposed to chew or grind up as they have a protective layer around them to protect your stomach lining from ulcers like aspirin. And some of them have layers designed to gradually release the medicine over time whereas if you crush that layer, you could accidentally overdose

I have hated swallowing capsules SO much because they always float to the roof of my mouth and it just feels unnatural to swallow. I can barely get tablets down without gagging and that’s tilting my head as far back as possible. But tilting my head forward when taking capsules has changed my life!! It sounds dramatic but I literally couldn’t do it and even the thought would cause my heart rate to go up and my palms to get sweaty. I now have to take capsules three times a day so imagine my dismay. But tilting my head forward made it to where I didn’t even feel it go down at all. I never was able to swallow pills with a liquid. But it is extremely easy to just take a piece of bread or anything else that is not liquid (a piece of fruit, bite a banana etc), chew it, and then just before you swallow throw a pill in and swallow (don't chew it). Extremely easy. But sadly I don't always have something to chew around me and being able to swallow with liquid would be much easier and faster.

Probably advised to try these methods. Thy just don't understand the anxiety because it's like swallowing food for them.. I can only swallow pills (even tiny ones) with food. And the food has to be the right consistency, not too mooshy like puree, but it has to have some texture. Bread or a very non ripe banana works best for me

I struggle for like 20 years with this issue, and today I finally found a method that kind of works for me. Instead of water I chew some food and then place the pill in my mouth. I wait for some minutes, moving it with my tongue to the back of my mouth, until I'm finally able to swallow it. The key is to persist and try not to chew the pill.

I have it too. But I grew up as the child of a chain smoker and was a mouth breather almost from birth. That makes you let your mouth hang open (a bit) and forces you to keep your tongue on the bottom of your mouth causing you to develop an abnormal swallowing pattern (using the wrong muscles) . Especially the bad advise of my parents to place the pill on the back end of my tongue made me gag. Putting it on the tip of my tongue made it easier. Thanx, helpful friend who gave me that advise! Jaw exercises and making sure I close my mouth [as often as possible of course] and keep the tip of my tongue at the back end of my upper teeth helped me develop a more normal swallowing pattern and now it's not so hard anymore.

I eat either a piece of a cracker, bread, or some peanut butter first then put the pill in with the food before you swallow it. Use water to wash down. It helps.

Theres only one way to 100% master this: Progressive overload. Try smaller tablets like vitamins. Take those tiny tablets for a week without chewing then move onto a soft capsule i used my daily omega 3. It was soft so i couldnt feel it in my mouth with all the water. Make sure u dont take too much water in ur mouth and pin ur nose and go for it. Dont hesitate. After that move onto ur main challenge the pill ur pescribed with. All the training will make ur brain unafraid and youll be able to do it

Some individuals have a more narrow esophagus as well & it needs to be stretched to swallow normally. You can always ask for liquid or a pill where the capsules can be opened & tablets crushed.

I believe it's because we know it's not food so we can't swallow it the same way we swallow food, I have this problem so I think if we think of it as a piece of candy or so maybe we can swallow it, swallowing the pill is a choice.. Hey y'all! Just wanted to share my experience earlier, I really was stuck with the pill that I have spitted out my mouth for who knows how many times. Eventually I noticed that the shell got softer (I mean as it should) but not as soft for the medicine inside the pill to flow out, so I took that chance to swallow it with as much water as I could gulp and honestly that still felt scary because of my anxiety but that was my first EVER pill experience. Yes, I did get yelled at, I got threatened that I would get my phone taken away but that just made me even more determined to push through. You guys, take your time if you really can't swallow it yet. It all comes down to your trust in yourself that you have to make it happen!

I think there should be a law where creating a solid medicine for people to swallow should be illegal and jail time worthy. I CANT SWALLOW NO MATTER WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS I LOOK UP TO! I can literally drink the most bitter Chinese herbal medicine but I can’t swallow. Why can’t they just make every medicine a liquid or powder like substance..

i use to have trouble when i was younger. instead of using water or a flat drink i would use carbonated drinks. i think the carbonated drinks help the pills float and it was a lot more comfortable. please give it a shot if you suffer this.

the looking down method really works! I'm a cancer patient and i have to take this huge pill to prevent lung issues and i have been unable to swallow it for weeks, but i just tried the looking forward method and it made swallowing the pill easy.

I think that's a good idea, but if this hasn't worked for anyone, I tried something before watching this video and it worked. I had a problem, my head wouldn't accept that something big would be swallowed by the water in my stomach, my brain thought it's not possible. So I tried something very good, I showed my brain how it's going to happen and told my brain it's possible, after showing my brain I tried again and I swear it worked. I was so happy. If anyone still has Stryggels with them, try this method and it will work inshallah😊.

Just a tip for the pop bottle method I find placing the pill towards the back of the tongue helps

I am sorry, I have to speak up at the dismissive attitude portrayed in this video. The issue of a tight cricopharyngeal muscle and not swallowing a pill equals anxiety? It is doctors like you that kept me from a proper diagnosis for 2 years when I actually had Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfuction (R-CPD), which is an inability to burp caused by the sphincter no working properly and in my case was adult onset that happened immediately post-op from an appendectomy. No one would listen to me when I complained about the distension in my belly, throat compression, chest discomfort, choking, body racking coughing and PAIN from my abdominal muscles feeling like they were being ripped apart from the acute onset. Then I developed pelvic floor collapse and bladder retention because of the pressure and still no one listened. I was the one who actually figured it out since every doctor I saw said "I don't know what is wrong with you" and then bounced me on to someone else. Thankfully I went over my GI's head and got a doctor that would actually listen. The clinch was when I had pH study done (they kept telling me it was GERD which does not cause distension) during the 24 hour test I burped non-stop and released all the backed up pressure from my gut. It was the irritation of the catheter that allowed this to happen. This was the last piece of the puzzle for internet search parameters and voila, a diagnosis that fit perfectly. I had the nurse take a video of me pressing my belly in to show it was not distended, then the catheter was removed. Then 29 hours later I had a friend take another video of my looking like I was pregnant with twins. It was with those two videos I was finally able to get a doctor to believe me. I am scheduled for the botox injections into the cricopharyngeal muscle in two weeks and I can hardly wait to have this gone. You need to correct your assessment of this type of condition because you are waaaaaay off base.

lean forward is for capsules and can be used for tablets but wont recommend it for bigger ones pop bottle might be way better conclusion? always ask for suspension if there is

I struggle with the same thing, what usually helps is swallowing water first to get your throat used to it and then when you get more water, place the pill in your mouth. Then position the pill and don’t hesitate, just swallow. The pill is small and is impossible to get stuck in your throat, that’s what helps me have some peace of mind

it's worse when the feeling to gag doesn't go away for a really long time too, i have to take pills at night and i'm afraid i'll just throw up in bed somehow, i have to eat something else to at least quell that feeling a bit but it just sucks i hate it
