Hi there, I have dysphagia due to an esophageal stricture and acid reflux. I'm mainly on a liquid diet with certain soft foods like yogurt and ice cream. I went several months without eating (only liquids) before I found a doctor that correctly diagnosed my problem. I'm being treated for it now they have to gradually dialate me once a month since my stricture was severe and closer to the top of my esophagus. I'm having a problem learning how to eat and swallow properly because it's been so long since I've eaten solid food. Its been a really difficult journey, I feel like I've completely forgotten how to swallow. Anytime I try to eat anything I feel like it's getting stuck. @@devilsKrEEd thank you so much for asking, you are so kind. 💕 I was finally approved for Medicare / disability, so I did get to go to speech therapy, and the best trick my speech therapist taught me was the same as number one that she has taught us here, the chin tuck! That helps me to swallow my saliva properly without is going into my lungs! although overall speech therapy did not work to get rid of my tube because apparently the little flappy thing in my throat that is controlled and connected to my brain, isd unable to be fixed to work so that I wouldn't aspirate if I eat or drink. So I am so on my feeding tube, but that is okay because I consider myself so very blessed. I did relearn how to walk and talk and write, which many people that have the type of brain lesion I have, are not so lucky. 1/3 die immediately, 1/3 get stuck in what is called locked in syndrome where they can only move their eyes for the rest of their life even though they are very alert and know what's going on, and the last third get a little bit better and accept their new normal, that's me! For that I am forever grateful and I am so thankful to be so blessed. So all in all I am doing fantastic! Thank you so much for asking my friend. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist who has been actively practicing in the field of dysphagia for many years. It is not recommended that these exercises be performed unless they have been prescribed by a Speech-Language Pathologist following an objective swallow assessment via a Modified Barium Swallow or a Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow. For some people, they can make the swallowing mechanism worse and actually increase the risk of obstruction / aspiration. This video is a lovely visual aid to help people who have been prescribed these exercises / manoeuvres, but it should be made clear that people should not perform them unless instructed to do so by a qualified professional.

Its because its not medical. Theres nothing wrong with you its all in your mind. If you think you cant swallow you wont be able to. I have and still am experiencing it. Its like with my breathing its all anxiety. You and i both are fine uts just us overthinking it. You should try relaxing and doing hobbies to take your mind off it. Sorry if this is long . I just wanna help 👍

I have had several endoscopys now and every time the results (even with biopsies) come back negative. I can swallow but often food gets stuck. I think there are many factors I need to look into however, factors the doctors can't seem to point out. Doctors I find seem very good at writing prescriptions for different drugs I should take but I wonder if there is a link for me with things like lack of sleep, fasting, not drinking throughout the day, how strenuous exercises impact my swallowing, my T-levels, etc. Something is obviously triggering it, I can go weeks with not a single episode and then other times I have the choking sensation several times a day. Maybe I need to invest in a swallowing habit diary as well as my own health observations.

I went to the dr after a car accident because of multiple complications with basic functions, this was one of them. Didn't even try to listen to my symptoms. Focused on the fact that I had memory issues (duh concussion) BUT told me it was depression?? And that I should get a prescription like Wtf ? I'm sick of the doctors where I live because they always say it's something unrelated until you really start to suffer and bother them to do testing. I'm not the only person Who's had this happen either. They say everything is nothing at this point cuz they just want you to pay big pharma. bs. KZbin has better solutions at this point 😂

Hello. I was diagnosed with Pharyngeal dysphagia due to a brain injury, but this swallowing problem it's getting worse the last few months, some days it's so hard to swallow and others I don't have any problems, recently I have the sensation that food its stock in my throat, I try to swallow very hard and drink a lot of water sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, the sensation can last 1- 2 days and suddenly disappeared, I've noticed white bumps in my throat and doing research on internet i've been able to remove them. I'm impress of what the body can adapt to every circumstance, my point here it's that I have never watched a video of swallowing exercises because it doesn't affect me every day (but when does it's so bad, worse days ) and my body did every exercise you explain here specially the last one! It's it very hard living like this. Thank you for your videos!!

Hi I'm a 18 year old male I'm suffering from swallowing difficulties . It's been 1 year now and I still have some difficulties back when it started it was like brain was not coordinating the swallow and it had gone worse over the period of like a month it had happened back then that I had a time that I was completely not able to swallow food not even solidified liquids after that I saw many doctors from a normal physician to ent to neurologist but nothing helped everything was to be seen normal in reports after that I found a ayurvedic treatment centre after which it started a improve but till date now also I'm not able to swallow properly and I hear some clicking sound when I swallow and requires water to clear the throat to every bite I take . What should I do?

Upright posture is great and I imagine that it would work best when back support is given by a chair or repositioned bed. Simply sitting on the side of a bed with someone with coordination problems could give an eater unnecessary things to think about.

extremely dry mouth and too much excessive saliva is extremely hard to swallow. My swallowing muscles goes on and off and I want to swallow normally like I used to than what I'm doing now is chewing like a chew toy on my sleeves, collar, nails, and another bite when food is really stuck in my throat for a long time.
@QueensNativeNYC5 жыл бұрын
Why do your swallow muscles go on and off if you don't mine me asking? I never had a problem swallowing in my life and then one night about two weeks ago I was having dinner and I started to notice difficulty swallowing. It felt like small particles of food were stuck in the back of my throat, and then I would have to swallow 2 or 3 times for the food to go down and ever since it's been a problem..

It keeps getting stuck in my throat and esophagus because of the tightness. All the swallowing methods I used never last me long. My muscles aren't strong they're very weak and fatigue. I'm getting my 2 surgery and I can go back to normal.

I have orophayrengeal Dysphagia but the ENT doctor after performing a trans nasal endoscopy of my throat and a CT scan could not find the problem. Should I see a gastroenterologist or a speech therapist? I am not asking for your medical advice at all just a recommendation on who is the nest professional for me!
@stephenappiah57666 жыл бұрын
Maybe a barium test would show what happens when you swallow
@SierraSpeech6 жыл бұрын
Hello, I wonder who diagnosed you with oropharyngeal dysphagia without a speech therapist or diagnostic. If you are having swallowing difficulty and the scope did not find anything, a modified barium swallow is a good option. Without your history, I cannot say what diagnostic to do. A gastroenterologist will be able to see issues with the esophagus and stomach, which can indirectly affect the swallow. This should be followed by a local speech therapist. Best of luck, Sierra
