I just want to repeat the thoughts and sentiments of the posters above. I have also gone through an experience of persistent severe clinical depression so I can literally 100% feel deeply in my bones the level of empathy and recognition I wish I didn’t have to bear like so many of us but at the same time makes me feel such gratitude that I was able to somehow get through and find the right treatment and therapeutic, life approach, counseling and admittedly begrudgingly sobriety (the only thing that I longingly sigh and daydream after is a traditional authentic margarita on the rocks with salt- I am from Texas and my family has a home in Mexico so that shouldn’t be a gigantic surprise to anyone lolololol) and I can only hope that those who are in the depths of that experience (like the first person above) or who are still having to fight aspects of it since it’s not exactly *not* an ongoing struggle and intentionally treated/managed condition, can find the healthy and effective ways in which to cope each and every day, and I for one can absolutely agree that often times for me too it’s the (what they would humbly think) “little” things like a Katya and Trixie podcast or UNHhhh or whatever else that’s *the only* thing that is able to keep you going at times 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

So glad they briefly touched on the topic of straight actors playing gay/LGBTQ+ roles (and vice-versa). It's a tricky situation, because ideally, yeah I want more queer people on my screen and more authentic representation, but at the same time, I also completely agree with what Katya was saying, in that straight actors should still be able to play LGBTQ+ roles AS LONG AS homophobia/transphobia isn't the reason why gay actors weren't chosen to play that same role. So if a straight actor was chosen, it should be because they were the best candidate for the role and fit the best within the overall story, as opposed to them being the best person solely because they're not actually queer and could potentially bolster marketing + PR. But I do understand how serious of an issue it is within the industry. I think what's hard is that some of my favourite gay movies have had straight actors play some of the roles, and for me, it didn't take anything away from the overall story because they portrayed the characters (to me) authentically within the confines of the script, etc, and not once did I think "hmm if a gay person and been involved in this kissing scene, they would have done it better because they're actually gay". I'm just getting tired of some members of the community be outright dismissive and sometimes hateful towards actors that land a gay/LGBTQ+ role without knowing how they got that role or the entire situation (I've seen the two young Love Victor main actors get this). Especially when they do the role justice and we still get queer representation through the story.

The thing is that for the audience it might not be that important because there is representation in the story, but for the actors it matters. LGBTQ+ actors don't get straight roles after coming out because they're not as "marketable". But when there are finally more queer roles, they don't get them either - because they're not a household name. So they still hardly get any roles. It's similar to whitewashing roles. People of color usually don't get the main character roles. And when there's a, say, female asian character, she's played by a white woman in a black wig. Also, if there are no LGBTQ+ people involved in the writing, directing or acting, it's probably going to be a stereotypical portrayal. With disabilities as well. Ideally, the best person for a role could be queer, of color, fat, disabled and still get the role just based on their acting. But unfortunately, we're not there yet.

@@jasmint3207 Look at the Kim’s Convenience writing room and the complaints the actors had there. Extremely little representation in the room, yet not willing to hear from the actors who were Korean Canadians with lived experience. All based off of a 2011 play by Ins Choi. I know it’s not exactly what’s being spoken about but, it’s the same field.

The tricky part is that we can pretty readily say that homophobia/transphobia plays a part in a gay/trans person not getting a role in almost every situation because of how rampant and systemic they are

"I need actors to play everyone." Exactly. I don't want just trans actors in trans roles. I don't want just cis actors in cis roles. I need trans actors in cis roles. I need cis actors in trans roles. It's idealistic of me to say so, but true /gender/ representation will not exist until everyone plays everyone. edit: a word second edit: I realize that this is an idealistic perspective, and it is not lost on me that /before/ we have true gender representation, there needs to be an equal playing field for all actors. I know that queer actors are disproportionately underrepresented, and they need to shine and they need to be given the same opportunities as their cis contemporaries. Thought I’d clarify.

Trixie hit the nail on the head when she started talking about how depending on your brain you don’t wanna be locked up in your head for long periods of time. Like she is so right about that.
