This faux stone sculpture was made with my DIY air dry clay recipe, plaster cloth, and insulation foam. It's a lightweight reproduction of a Mayan monkey hacha, found in Veracruz, Mexico.
For this project the air dry clay recipe was altered, just slightly, by using brown paper instead of toilet paper in the mix. Everything else, including all gram measurements, was the same as the original recipe. You can find the recipe here: • How To Make Air Dry Cl...

If you haven't seen the video that shows you how to make a pattern for a sculpture using the grid system, you can find it here: • Paper Mache Animals - ...
You could use my paper mache clay recipe instead of the grout to seal the foam. To see how that looks on a foam giraffe sculpture, see this guest post on my blog: bit.ly/2VF2Wo0

Hi Jonni! Thanks for all these recipes for paperclay! I've been looking for a recipe for a project and the paper clay seems close to what I need.....but....I'm wondering if you've ever tried calcium carbonate(marble dust) in your recipe instead of flour? I need the binding/absorbancy characteristics of the marble dust for the forms I want to make and flours won't work. Any experience with this? Thanks very much!
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried it, but it should work just fine. You'll need to do some tests, and remember that it takes time for the calcium carbonate to absorb the water. Add a little, and then give it time to thicken up before adding more. If you find the amount that works best, please let us know.

How do you make plaster cloth? Is it possible to put plaster cloth over a brick wall, for instance, and once dried, pull it off and have that plaster cloth dry and in tact?
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacqueline. I don't know how to make plaster cloth. I buy mine. It's gauze with powdered plaster stuck to it. You might be able to dip fabric in wet plaster, but it gets hard so fast that it would be difficult to work with. If you put it on anything that's porous, it will stick. I don't think it would come off a brick wall unless you put plastic over the wall, or coated it in some kind of oil. But try it - it might work.

You may be right. I'd never heard of the hachas until I started this project, and all the articles I found about the hachas from Veracruz included a reference to the Mayans. But maybe both cultures made them. Here's one article: collections.dma.org/artwork/5099692

Ultimate Paper Mache / Hacha means ax the article refers to the artifact depiction and it analogy with an ax And not like a name of an ancient people ethnicity Hacha is the name in Spanish of how the artifact looks like The flowering of the Totonaca culture in the Gulf of Mexico basin dates back to periods well before the Mayan culture

Excuse me Ms Jonni, is it possible to make a paper clay liquid enough (probably a consistency of PVA glue/cement mix) so you can pour it into a resin mould and let it harden? I've tried several combination by changing the portion of glue/compound/paper, but still cant find the right mix. Thanks in advance
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried anything like that, but I doubt it would work. If you pour it in, it will get hard on the outside first, then crack as it dried further down. It's really intended to be used in thin layers. You might be able to think it enough to brush it into your mold. Be sure to test it to make sure it doesn't get stuck onto your mold and ruin it. I did do some experiments using paper, glue and plaster. You can find the video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4aqnX-sidOGf68

Oh Good Jonny! Amazing piece of art. I love archaeology and have some real pieces at home. Sometimes friends ask me to give it as a gift, but I won't because they are unique. But now you gave me a good idea of how to make good replicas of the some more suitable to be copied, and these will be great gifts. And above all, I will enjoy doing it, because I am really learning the art you taught me. Thanks a lot ! ! !

Thanks for the video Jonni ..Ive made 'stone' sculptures often. With huge ones theres the issue of warping so u have to do another round of clay+grout to fill the cracks. Two humble suggestions-Ash from burnt leaves could be sprinkled on the clay to get the colour right without having to paint it. And florets of broccoli or cauliflower could be used to give texture. Whats nice abt them is tht u could hold them by the stem like thing and press them lightly..theres grip.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Trolika - the ashes are a great idea. And I would never think to use broccoli or cauliflower as a texture stamp. Wonderful ideas. 😀

A mix of kerosene and candlewax should work as an aislant for the clay before you use the plastercloth. We use it in my sculpture class when going from cast to cement. I think it might work, if you don't have the spray can thing
