How do i stop my paper clay from going mouldy as i like doing big projects so i need to store it for a while? Thanks

I did fill the plaster mold all the way. The material will shrink as the plaster pulls the water out of the Li Qua Che.

I'm currently working on a life size giraffe (calf) for my mother- I'm having issues with the weight of her head. I filled pvc pipe for her legs, used two pieces of rebar inside the pipe and then filled with sand. Her head is still too heavy.. so now I'm considering placing a sand bag in the belly. Any ideas?

Have you seen Atelier Arenas videos on making paper maché into plaster molds painted with a soap mixture for a mold release? It omits the expense of the silicone. She just pops out her layers when dry. I think this might work for paper maché clay, but you have to cut up the originals to get around undercuts then re-assemble when dry. Her originals are oil based clay.

I have seen her videos, and I think she has used a version of paper mache clay in them. My recipe sticks to plaster, but maybe she found a way to keep that from happening.

Does this recipe double or more easily? Any concerns? I love these videos. I'm taking on a new project today.

Yes, you can double the recipe. If your mixer has trouble mixing a large batch, you can use a paint mixing attachment on an electric drill.

Does this recipe work with Wurth Joint Compound or is that one still a bust? Thanks so much!!
@UltimatePaperMache4 күн бұрын
I haven't been able to test it with Wurth, but several people have tried it, and they say it works really well. When you leave out the PVA Elmer's glue, you don't get that weird stiffness or rubbery lumps - just nice paper mache clay. :)

Can you use polystyrene for parts of the armature?
@UltimatePaperMache8 күн бұрын
Sure you can, if you don't need it to be stiff enough to hold up the sculpture. It would make your finished project a lot lighter, so I think it's a great idea. :)

I made this amazing mix for some animal themed hats, though they turned out too heavy and I had to redo the bodies mostly with eva foam (but kept the clay for facial features). I'm going to try and reduce the % of the heavier items and increase the paper % next time. Thanks so much for the recipe.

Hi! This is amazing! Quick question: if you are using a balloon for your armature, would you apply paper mache clay directly to the balloon? Or should I make a paper strip layer first? Thanks! Beautiful work!!
@UltimatePaperMache10 күн бұрын
I almost never use a balloon for an armature, because they constantly change their shape, and that can cause either wrinkling or cracking of the paper mache. But if you really want to use one, you'd probably have better luck using a layer of paper strips first. The paper mache clay would probably just slip off the rubber, so you'd have to put it on just one fairly small area at a time, and let it dry.

So I've been watching your videos for awhile, and I've been working with paper mache for a few years. But today I kinda got an idea to add corn starch to my wheat paste to help strengthen the product. I haven't tried it yet and was wondering if you've ever experimented with it, and what your thoughts are.

I haven't tried it, and I don't know how it would affect the paste. It would be an interesting experiment, though. If you try it, let us know what you learn. :)

This is fabulous! Now I just need a granddaughter to make this for. I think I would have doubled up the eyelashes so make a thicker strand and I would use thicker or more wool for the hair perhaps it could be attached to some plain white dressmaking foundation/stiffening fabric and machine sewed into a long strip... But either way this is a beautiful mask.

@MiaLopezdevos13 күн бұрын
Hoe long does this paste keep? I was thinking of storing the cooked flour in a Tupperware for future use but now i don’t know
@UltimatePaperMache13 күн бұрын
You can keep it for a few days in the fridge, but whenever you mix water with flour, yeast will eventually make it go sour. It's really best to make a small batch that can be used in a day or two, and then make a new batch.

Great video. Let me ask you. I watched your method of putting the paper strips on the cup/mold. Have you ever tried to tear up the paper really small as a batch, then mix it completely with the flour paste to form “clay”, whereby you then shape the clay into three dimensional objects rather than use molds? I tried this method with my last diorama scene and wondered if you ever did this before.
@UltimatePaperMache15 күн бұрын
I haven't tried that particular method for making paper mache, although I do use my paper mache clay recipe often. I always use it in a fairly thin layer over an armature, though. If you mix your paper with glue and then use it as a solid mass, instead of putting it over something like a cup or armature, I'm not sure if it would ever dry completely on the inside. You might want to try it, though, to see if it works.

What other cement can I use if I don't have Portland cement? Thanks
@UltimatePaperMache17 күн бұрын
I don't know - I'm not an expert in concrete products, and I can't purchase everything in the store. (I can't even lift most of the bags! 🙂 But Portland cement is a very common product, so it shouldn't be difficult to find. If you have some other cement product, go ahead and experiment with it. And if it works, be sure to let us know!

Just curious if you've ever had a problem with bugs being attracted to your finished projects, or if your topcoat is enough to deter them? Thanks so much!♥️
@UltimatePaperMache17 күн бұрын
I haven't had that problem, but the kind of bugs that like paper mache don't seem to live in our climate. Not inside, anyway. I think the crickets would be happy to munch on a paper mache sculpture, but they stay outside. A lot of people who live in hotter, humid climates do have problems with bugs and rodents eating paper mache, no matter what kind of sealer they use.

How can I make the mask water resistant?
@UltimatePaperMache17 күн бұрын
Titebond III wood glue is water resistant. If you're going to wear a mask out in a rainstorm, don't dilute the glue. After you paint it, you might want to protect the paint with a spray varnish. But I find that paper mache will eventually soften if it's wet for very long, even if seal it.

Hi I just found you. Do you have any suggestions for making masks that can be used over eyeglasses? Thank you. Your masks are beautiful!
@UltimatePaperMache18 күн бұрын
If you're designing your masks with clay over a mask form or mannequin, you could fill out the shape of your glasses first, and then add all the mask details over it. Or make an oversized mask with a cap on the back, so the face of the mask can be held away from your face.
