Hi friends! In this video I share with a really cool technique that I learned from Heather Tracy with ThicketWorks. She did a really cool (and quick) video showing how you can take ordinary printer paper and turn it into vellum to use in your crafting and art projects. I am obsessed with this new to me technique and I am definitely going to be incorporating this technique in my projects.
I will have lots of links below so be sure to scroll down for all of that information.
Thank you all so much for watching and for letting me share this awesome technique with all of you. I truly appreciate each and ever one of you and your constant support of me and my channel : )
Have a wonderful day!

This is a fun technique. I have been doing this for many years now. But this way is way to hard.I will tell you of a much simpler way Abby. All you will need is your paper, baby oil, a cotton ball, and some paper towels. Just put a few drops of baby oil on to your cotton ball and rub it into your paper. Keep repeating untill your paper is covered. Hold your paper up to the light to see if you missed any spots. You do not have to do both sides because the oil will soak into your paper to the other side. Pat dry with the paper towel or use your heat gun to dry. Let the paper lay on the paper towel overnight. i usually make a stack of them layering them between paper towels. Now you have vellum. You can run them threw your printer, stamp, spray ink or anything you would do with regular paper. I know you really like this technique, so I hope this way will be much easier for you.

would like to provide you with a tip for cheaper paint brushes....take a pair of pliers and squeeze the end of the metal. It helps to hold the bristles in place.

Hi Debbie : ) I did film and upload a follow up video for this if you'd like to check it out. I was worried the baby oil would seep onto my pages and it did (which is what I show in the second video). But...I'm pretty sure I used way too much baby oil so I'm going to give it another go and use less to see if that helps. How did yours turn out?

Awesome video tutorial. My dear Abby, we subscribe to your channel because we love you. We like your style, we love it when you chat with us, so even though it's in your nature to apologize, there is absolutely no need. I love process videos because even though I might have tried a certain technique, I ALWAYS learn something new. And there are so many crafters who have never tried what you are showing us how to do. And if you don't explain and show us, we will miss out on a great learning experience. So, hear, hear my dear ... we love you and we love your channel. I am so enjoying seeing you crafting and making videos. I'm so happy that you feel well enough to make them. Hugs!

The transparency is cool, but for me its the texture...how yummy and delicious!!! I can hear the papyrus sound and imagine the butteryness as I hold these pieces. To write on them has to be luxurious which is my primary motivation for creating some of these. I did see a utube from 2014 maybe, but she was simply making transparent paper. Heather just upped the ante with the inks and such, now you up it again with colors. How far can we go??? The possibilities are endless, the rewards are priceless. :-):-):-)

But the oil transfers to other things and I wouldn’t put in a journal UNLESS the oil is sealed with some other medium like mod podge. I ruined some envelopes by placing an oiled tag against them 😳🙁

Hi Abby! Girl, you totally ROCKED this technique! 😍I love the results...looking forward to seeing your experimentation - that will be super cool! Stefanie let me know about this video, and I'm so glad she did! BTW - I see that others have had problems with the oil leaching onto adjacent pages - this hasn't happened to me (probably because my DIY Vellum pages are glued down, and facing each other - not in direct contact with other pages)...I mention this because you indicate that this is for a commission piece, and I would hate it if you had oil transfer where you don't want it 😮...you might want to consider using either a spray sealer or even a thinned layer of white glue to seal the oils in, before clipping any of the small tags to other pages, etc. Thank you SO much for your incredibly generous shout out, my friend. Love your work!

With the paper oiled ,I’m surprised to see you put a water product on top. Oil and water not very blendable. I suppose letting it dry the sediments will sit on top but not really bonded.

Great tutorial but I have read that the oil will make the inks and colors run if the emphemera or paper is touching other pages. Can you research this, please?

Same here Terri...I actually experimented a little with this and I found that the oil will transfer to the adjacent pages eventually. Maybe I did something wrong but until I hear more I won't be using it in my books unfortunately :-/

Oh, no! So sorry to hear that this happened, Rosie! It is something I haven't encountered, so I didn't realize it might be happening for others. Thank you for the head's up - I will definitely be sealing my DIY Faux Vellum pages if they are going to come in contact with 'non-oiled' pages. xox

Oh another thing that might be worth trying for those whao haven't yet, is using glycerine pretty much in the same way. I haven't had much time to really experiment with this one but it looks promising :-)

Great Idea, you can do the antiquing before you put the oil on them, like a tea or coffee dye, you can also crinkle up your paper before the oil, flatten it, put some more texture on the crinkle lines, then once you get it the way you like, stamp pictures, words, whatever you want........then put on the oil, and watch your vellum piece come alive. This is so pretty, but way to hard if you're going to make a lot of them. TFS
