Hi friends! In this video I am testing the faux vellum I made to see if the baby oil transfers onto the papers or whatever material it may come in contact with. In case you read the description box before watching the video, I won't mention the results : )
I will for sure be doing a follow up video as mentioned so be sure to keep your eyes out for that sometime next week.
Thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful day : )

Hi Abby. Awhile ago I ran across Nik the Booksmith who, in her video, was so thrilled to have run across accidentally a wonderful DIY for vellum. She uses clear acrylic spray like Rustoleum. The results really were amazing. Type in her name and "DIY Vellum" and it will come up. I enjoy your personality and artistic flare. I wish for you better health and lots and lots and lots of monetary rewards!! YaY!

Great test .....As I am new to JJ ...I have been warned about this too and then been advised that once you have the right size you brush thin clear glue over the envelope or tag and once totally dried it will no longer bleed. But you must not cut it thereafter otherwise it will bleed through the cut edges again. ....love that awesome Tome you showed in the beginning...tfs 🤗👍

also.any material (including acid free ones) dyed with coffee, tea, treated with ModPodge, petroleum based products, most adhesives, or wrapped/kept in plastics are NOT acid free & will quickly deteriorate, fade, or discolor any textile (paper, photo fabric, document, artwork, etc,) stored with it. Always have garments like wedding dresses professionally cleaned & wrapped for preservation before storing long term. Papers, books, & photos(and herbs & spices) should be kept climate controlled with low light, temp, & humidity..i LOVE vellum so much & hesitate using my precious pieces...I wish they would make vellum in styles like your fakes...you do such beautiful work...just amazing. I want to have a long, close-up look at your Tome...WOW!

Thanks for showing this experiment. I wanted to try making faux vellum but now I’ll wait until I see if you found a way to make it usable. I’m working on an altered book and it was so inspiring to see your tome that is full to the brim! Do you have a video about the making of the well stuffed book or a flip through? I’d love to see what’s inside!!❤️ Thanks for sharing, love!❤️

I really commend you for doing this experiment. I saw the original video you referenced, and YT recommended this. I found the technique interesting, but puzzled over why anyone needed to do it when michaels and other chains sell a superthin vellum you could do the same effects on sans oil and all the hassle. Using glycerin is one way to get a faux leather look but I don't know if it leaves a residue. Joann's comments below about acid free materials and breakdown over time are really important things for paper crafters to read up on to understand the long term impacts of materials they use on anything u hope will be an heirloom. Just remember that artists have been pondering and experimenting for centuries and have many lessons to teach us on making our materials endure.

I was curious about how it felt when you made it, oil is oil, and quite slippery, I am grateful you did the experiment thank you can't wait for the next round. I was waiting to see if I would incorporate this in one of my journal classes but I will hold off until the next round. Thanks Abby🌹

Thanks for doing this test!! Makes me wonder though if leaving the vellum pieces pressed with other material for a few days, maybe the oil would soak up on the other materials and then the vellums could be used? Would be interesting to know how to get the vellum pieces not to leak the oil everywhere! Hope you are able to figure something out :)

Hi, new subby here 😁. I use wax now which doesn’t leach into adjacent paper. It’s a great technique and there are videos out there but I can’t remember which one I watched. You’d need to use your paints and sprays first and then use the wax. It leaves a beautiful texture and appearance. Great video. I like the longer process type with chat 😁❤️

This is what I would try. Taking half and spraying the way you spoke about and take the second half and put through a wash.. fill your sink with soapy water. Do not soak papers just run in and out a couple of times. Then have a clean container of warm water and rinse and lay out on paper dowel to dry. Paper towel will soak up the oil if there is any left.

Nice of you to test, but I'm wondering did you come up with a solution to stop the leaking. Please share if you have. Thanks for the great videos.

Joyce Lindner Linseed oil turns dark, almost black in 50 years. Many museums stopped using it as it ruins furniture and other surfaces.

Maybe press each piece in doubled up paper towels would work? But I would retest after you “think” oil has all been spent, to see if it still bleeds through...

I'd go with the powder, seems a sensible solution. Also, wouldn't a vintage item, from say the kitchen, have some oil spots to a certain extent anyway?

Just a side note: NEVER use anything but unadulterated acid free materials on any paper or fabric keepsake that you want to store or preserve for any amount of time. I would want the TOME hat you made to keep forever- so this is a BAD idea.

The fabric from the wedding dress is probably made from 100% polyester, and polyester won't even absorb sweat.
