Per Martin's "first album I got" point, there are a few records that are my favourites because of this. Because that record (eg. Chinatown by Thin Lizzy), I listened to it over and over and fell in love with it as a whole that I was motivated to explore the rest of their discography. While sentimentality does play a role, my history is longest with that first purchase which I continued listening to along with the rest of the catalogue, so it holds a special place in my heart and remains my favorite record.
@Rextum

Chinatown was actually one of the last Thin Lizzy albums I heard, but it is a really good one, Black Rose is my favorite, then Chinatown and then Thunder & Lightning. So whether Chinatown is a first album or not, it is a cool choice for a favorite. Sugar Blues, We Will be Strong, Sweetheart… etc etc.
@matthewjachimiec

Not a bad first album! Was just listening to that album today ha. I like/love everything Lizzy did from Nightlife to Thunder and Lightning. I think Chinatown is underrated and is a good hard rock album, but I’m not sure it’s a great Lizzy album. It’s quite consistent top to bottom, but I don’t think the ‘highs’ (We Will Be Strong, Killer On The Loose, Genocide, etc.) stack up against the best material on Fighting through Black Rose. Personally, I think Renegade is a much more successful album with that lineup.

@@toddhill7483 I'm with ya on the first 2 Cars albums, and I would personally put Panorama and Shake it Up over Heartbeat City myself, but I've been in several fan forums for The Cars over the years and I've seen Heartbeat City beat Candy-O more times than not..surprising I know, but that album came out when Mtv was big and acquired a whole fan base soley from that one album. It sold more than Candy-0 too, and I think they both tied on platinum status, but I disagree with them being a 2-trick pony sorta speak with their entire fan base, and Nature of the Beast outsold Harder Faster by quite a bit, so wouldnt that one be the most popular? I just disagree with alot of their conclusions..hahahhaha.

Some bands where I have a hard time picking a favorite are: Uriah Heep, I lean towards Look At Yourself or Salisbury, but there are other Heep albums that I think are just as good. Queen, it's usually between Sheer Heart Attack and A Night At The Opera , however I can't deny the greatness of both Queen and Queen II. With ELO, it could be Face The Music, Eldorado, A New World Record or Out Of The Blue. ELP, Tarkus , Trilogy or Brain Salad Surgery. Mott The Hoople, their s/t debut, Brain Capers, All The Young Dudes or Mott. Cheap Trick, I have a hard time deciding between their debut, Heaven Tonight or Dream Police . Melvins are a good one for this. A lot of people site Bullhead as their favorite (the band Boris got their name from a song on this record). For me, Houdini is my favorite although Stoner Witch is a close second. They have a lot of weird experimental albums. There's Nude With Boots which is a lot more accessible. Then they had a fantastic "comeback" to form with (a) Senile Animal and Bride Screamed Murder where they added a second drummer and Jared Warren-both from the band Big Business. Those records went over extremely well. I saw them on both tours and I talked to people that said they like the newest albums the best but didn't really know their first couple of albums (most songs off of those-Ozma and Gluey Porch Treatments are slow, heavy and like 2 minutes long). There are are obvious filler songs on many albums in the 70's as well, I often wondered whether the bands knew they had a crappy song on there but couldn't come up with anything better, or seriously thought what they had recorded was a decent song. Sometimes the filler song becomes legendary though, like Paranoid and Tush - both recorded just because there was 3 minutes of room left on the tape that had to be used.

Mountain Climbing or Nantucket Sleighride? Deep Purple Machine Head or Burn? UFO Is tough, I'm going Force It but there's a few toss ups. Trower Bridge of Sigh though I might prefer Twice Temoved.

I truly don't care what the 'consensus' pick for any band is. I like what I like, and I find it ridiculous to feel you're wrong (or be told you're wrong) just because you prefer one album over another. No amount of consensus will ever make me think, for example, that Ozzy isn't the worst singer to ever become successful.

For me the perfect examples for category 4 are the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, I can neither choose a studio nor a live album, I can also not choose a specific era.i might also add Rory Gallagher, I like a lot of stuff throughout his career including the most recent live albums.

In my collection there are a few bands where I am unable to pick a favourite on the spot. The most prominent example would be Black Sabbath, Rush, Iron Maiden. Coincidentally they all have what (I believe) are exceptionally long runs of consecutive high-quality albums. Couldn't pick my favourite if my life depended on it.

So what are the 3-4 favorites for Priest? I am guessing Sad Wings or Stained Class or Screaming for Vengeance or Painkiller? But how about British Steel or Defenders of the Faith? Sin after Sin and Killing Machine/Hell Bent are great but usually somewhat forgotten, I guess.

Got a show idea for the Funhouse that came from the Prog Seat discussion the other night about wanting new studio material from King Crimson: Legacy Bands Where We Do (or Don't) Want New Albums. For example, me personally, I'm not even a big Billy Joel fan, but I think it's pretty cool that he hasn't released an album since 1993!

Magnum could fit in multiple categories, some will always say Storytellers Night/Chase The Dragon/Vigilante/Wings of Heaven, others may choose MagnumII/Kingdom of Madness, unlikely any will choose the post 2000 albums even though these are really good. Saxon Could also fit in multiple categories.

Man, picking a favourite album in hard to do with 14,000 plus in my collection. I thought about it for quite awhile and cane up with Deep Purples Fireball album from 1971. Tough decision.

As I'm currently sitting on 615 cd releases, the prospect of someone owning 14,000 is truly depressing. (But I do love the never ending pursuit of great albums)

@@toddhill7483 Just hit 19k last week...Others have said "what's the point" in owning that much music (since you can't listen to all of it all the time) but the point isn't to play all of it all the time and/or only owning as much as you can constantly listen to over & over - it's having variety. I basically host my own radio station (for myself)... And sure there's also that 'hoarding" mentality that kicked in where you just gotta own all albums by a given artist. I still try to stick to music I really actually like - I buy music as mp3 downloads a la carte so I only pay for 'good' tracks. And a while back when I made the jump to mp3-only I ripped all of the 'worthy' tracks from my cd's & vinyl LP's one-time to form the basis of my initial music database (maybe about 15,000 tracks to start from about 3.5k-4k albums - I'm now at 72,000 tracks & counting). It's amazing how many great albums came out of the 70's by either then-unknown or now-forgotten bands! From that decade alone I've got close to 20,000 tracks across maybe 4.5k+ albums

Has anyone else noticed that the shorter Pete's hair gets the shaggier Martin's hair is. Imagine a Hippy Martin and a skinhead Pete, Talk about role reversals!! As usual a great conversation between two smart music loving dudes! My disagreement is with The Doors. Yes that first is indeed great and one of the top firsts ever but so is their last LP a best ever send off. 'LA Woman' is my favorite with their 1st being my 2nd! Like Pete my favorite Dead LP is 'Blues for Allah' and Floyd's 'D.S.O.T.M'. 'Remain in Light' is peak Talking Heads, the 80's DSOTM for me. Slayer's 3rd to 5th, a peak trio IMHO! Thanks for another great video!

My favorite band in the whole wide world, Cheap Trick, easily has multiple 10s for me in their catalog (debut, Heaven Tonight, Dream Police, 1997, Special One, Rockford, The Latest) and the others are all in that 8-9 range (even their "bad albums"). Of course, they have their stinker songs, as with all bands. Also, Nature of the Beast is the best April Wine album

Lots of solo artists that were previously in bands are in the fourth category. When you don’t have another band member anymore to balance your ego there’s a greater chance of a bad song or three on the album. John Lennon as a solo artist Paul McCartney as a solo artist. Joe Walsh Peter Frampton Roger Waters Pete Townsend
