I have several of the same books and must say I also love the New Ball preserving book, it finally allows FRESH lime juice as an approved acid. I like a good lime flavor esp in my salsa, enchilada, salsa verde etc. I also saw a few of these books and thought i'd like to look them over...so I popped over to the online library and found a few such as the Amish Canning and the Pam River Cottage book. You have a proper library there!

I absolutely love your channel. As a new preserver and canner I am learning so much. Thank you! I presently am reading “Mrs. Wheelbarrow’s Practical Pantry” and was dismayed to see her using fresh lemon juice not bottled in her recipes. Are these recipes safe? I so loved this book. The USDA stresses the importance of using bottled juices for safety.
@PrepperPotpourri Жыл бұрын
Yes, that book was written in 2015. I am not sure exactly when the recommendation to use only bottled lemon juice was issued. According to the Healthy Canning website: "For the record, respected home canning author Linda Ziedrich disputes the USDA’s view on the assured acidity of fresh lemon juice versus bottled. You may wish to review her analysis at : Real Lemon versus ReaLemon "

Thank you so much for sharing. I have several of these books and enjoyed seeing the others. My go to book for starting out was the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning. However, these other books certainly tell you how to use what you've canned. I'm very impressed with your choices.

You definitely have quite the collection of keening books. And I would say that is a fantastic resource to have on hand. You mentioned a lot of people just use the Internet but in any type of grid down or SHTF type situation you would not have the Internet and those guides could be worth their weight in gold. Thanks for sharing my friend.

Excellent, thank you! I just canned 16 pints of orange marmalade. I used combination of tangerine, navel and mandarin. Our trees are still full so I’ll can different recipes this weekend. And I’m thinking of Meyer lemon marmalade when I pick my lemons. I love your collection of canning books as I agree, each book has something specific and unique not in another one. My hope is to can some pesto for the freezer when my basil is ready. Oh my gosh, since I’m in SoCal produce and herbs are almost ready. Thank you again for your insight and inspiration and sharing your collection.

Thank you, but I wish you had reviewed each book a little more in depth. I mean, jams are one of the easiest things to can, if you like water bath canning and tons of sugar. I am more interested in pressure canning hearty recipes.

Making your own canning binder is a great idea. I have only been canning for a few years. I started with the “Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving” and over time I have purchased “So Easy to Preserve” by the Cooperative Extension/The University of Georgia, “Mrs. Wages Home Canning Guide & Recipes”, and most recently the ‘USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning”. Like you, I prefer to have a book on hand that I can reference as opposed to just using the Internet. I enjoyed you video and I am a first time viewer. I ordered “Blue Ribbon Preserves: Secrets to Award-Winning Jams, Jellies, Marmalades and More” as per your video. I am going to start on that binder. Thanks.

I only started canning in November 2018. Like you said, once you can something, what do you make with it... that's my problem. I saw your other video where you showed the Better Homes and Gardens Complete Canning book in the binder, and bought it straight away. I've done nothing with it though. :/ Thank you for your videos, they've certainly helped me learn the do's and more importantly don'ts of canning. I've a lot to learn still, which I'm looking forward to. :)

Thank you for sharing. Do you have any idea when the "New" Ball book will be available again? Or, are they planning to publish an updated one? I don't want an e-book version. Nor, paying $78+ for a $17.98 (Walmart) hardcover, if they had it in stock. FWIW... Have quite a few older canning books, including my Mother's 1957 Ball Blue Book. Always enjoy collecting how-to books whether they're for my shop, garden or our kitchen. Big Thumbs Up on a personal canning binder.
@lolajane14525 жыл бұрын
I have looked everywhere trying to find the the "New" Ball book too that everyone has been recommending. I even tried contacting Ball but for some odd reason they no longer have it. Like you I'm not paying an outrageous price for a 17.98 book. Hoping someday I'll find it at a yard sale.
