if you like A few Acres of Snow, play Hands in the Sea - it's a fantastic sequel that improves upon this design!

@7:12 "Age of Steam is probably the game Martin Wallace is best known for" Brass: "Am I a joke to you, Tom?"
@Straddllw2 жыл бұрын
My favourite is Brass: Birmingham. Which also happens to be my favourite Euro of all time. It’s the perfect blend of elegance and crunchiness for me, just can’t be beat. If you don’t mention Brass as a Martin Wallace fan, are you even a Martin Wallace fan?
@Jammonstrald2 жыл бұрын
Anno 1800 is my favorite, and made me realize that Martin Wallace is my favorite designer. Brass, Liberte, Auztralia... I really like every game of his I've played. They're all very different and interesting, and have themes that are actually well implemented by their mechanics.
@leksiewwee45382 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised Brass series, London, Auztralia and Anno 1800 did not make the list. As a fan of semi-coop, I find Auztralia to be one of the best i've played without all the clunky stuff.

My top 10: 1. Brass: Lancashire 2. A Study in Emerald (1st ed) 3. Brass: Birmingham 4. AuZtralia 5. Wildlands 6. Hit Z Road 7. A Few Acres of Snow 8. Railways of the World 9. Automobile 10. Steam From the comments, it sounds like I need to try Anno 1800 and London.

The 3 games in the Brass series (Brass Birmingham, Brass Lancashire and Age of Industry) are great. And lately Anno 1800 has become one of my favourites.

Mythotopia tops the list for me. I'd hesitate to play it with more than 2, but at 2 it is absolutely wonderful.

Great list! Have You played Auztralia?
@adilgeresu22962 жыл бұрын
As Tom mentioned, most MW fans would have one of the brass games and age of steam as their top 2. I also think London 2nd Edition doesn’t get the attention it deserves. But the man is a legend.
@aakashjain44982 жыл бұрын
London 2nd edition is actually my favourite MW game

London 1st Edition is also excellent. Not played 2nd though, to compare.

I'm a big fan of Martin Wallace as a designer, my favourite games of his are Brass (Birmingham and Lancashire), Rocketmen, Via Nebula, Wildlands, Nanty Narking, and Toledo.

Wildlands is really great! I wanted a miniature combat game that I could remember the rules to easily and had a lot of variety....Wildlands delivers on that big time!
@jaytee632362 жыл бұрын
Another choice for A Few Acres of Snow would be A Handful of Stars, which is a similar idea but set in space with 4 players.

I do love Brass: Birmingham, and enjoy London 2nd Edition, Wildlands I sold lol - didn't get good feedback from friends either

A Study in Emerald grows on me each time I play it. I have a first edition copy (signed by Mr. Wallace himself) but I incorporate a lot of the streamlined rules from the second edition. Really unique game. London second edition is beautiful and brilliant. AuZtralia is interesting and quirky. The Steam games are pretty good, and Brass is a masterpiece, though it's not my favourite.

Hit Z Road is a fun and simple survival game that is good for competitive play (2-3 players) and also solos very well. I also enjoy the retro/do it yourself, aesthetic/theme.

For us, Whether it's Talisman or Runebound, the key to making it shorter is just reducing the amount you need to trade in for level up.

Tom's list has barely changed, since the last time he did it!
@gavkenny2 жыл бұрын
Gosh my list wouldn't look anything like Tom's at all. Missing some really great games like Age of Steam, Brass Birmingham and Lancashire, Automobile, Princess of the Renaissance, Auztralia ...
@middleclassboardgamer2 жыл бұрын
The doom track moves Runebound along fairly quickly. I own every game on this list except A Few Acres of Snow (though I do own the reimplimentation Mythotopia) and A Study in Emerald. Brass:Birmingham is my favorite from MW, followed closely by Nanty Narking. London 2nd edition is way up there too.
@aloharay2 жыл бұрын
Love Wildlands. Played it twice last week, once with 2 p;ayers. once with four. Plays well and quick. But you are going to lose your guys, you have to get used to that.

Martin Wallace is the slugger in baseball that swings for the fence every at bat. Lots and lots of strikeouts and some real gems. I loved A Few Acres of Snow and never read up on the Halifax Hammer until I played someone who had, and it ruined the game. In actuality, in a real problem with F&I War games, as once the British figured out Halifax was the key to victory the war was basically over.

London second edition, AuZtralia, P.I., Discworld Ankh Morpork, A Study In Emerald second edition. Probably in that order.

Tom have you tried Anno 1800? I think you might like it due to your love of tech trees.

Wow only one of my top three mentioned. #1 Study in Emerald (1st Edition), #’s 2 and 3 could be argued are the same game with different skins, but I Love them: Mythotopia and Handful of Stars. These two games are rarely mentioned in reviews and I don’t understand why!?!?

Via Nebula! I can’t tell you how many people I’ve brought into the hobby with this game. Once people have played your normal gateway games, this is what I pull out to play. It gives people a sense of what a modern euro board game can really become once you get past the intro games. Also has one of the best inserts of any game I own.

Via Nebula is a great light game. Wish it got more love... and an expansion.

Auztralia? London? Brass? Anno? All much better games than almost all those on your list! But he is such a great designer with many great games so good enough list.

Steam, Brass, Automobile, Anno top for me but interesting to see some others here. Most underated is Rise of Empires IMO.

AuZtralia is the one that is missing. And, I only have a Top 3 from the designer... 1. Wildlands 2. AuZtralia 3. Discworld

Wait... that Conquest of the Empire isn't a remake of the old Milton Bradley Gamemaster series game of the same name? Larry Harris was the designer of the that one. I need to investigate this now. I used to love the old Conquest of the Empire game from the 80s, but it was a hair broken with the catapult strategy.
@ronrideout39692 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing...about the designer, not the catapult thing.

Good enough list on one of my top 10 designers though there are some games from MW I like better than the ones here. Glad to see Study in Emerald and Discworld made the list. I liked A Few Acres of Snow but feel Lincoln is a better design. Was underwhelmed by Wildlands but I did like the Judge Dredd one.
@VaultBoy132 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. Wildlands and Judge Dredd are like 98% the same game. They're similar enough that the games are cross-compatible.
