Back in the mid 80’s (when I was about 8) my dad brought home a used Suzuki 1100 and took me for a ride. I couldn’t even reach all the way around his waist and I had to grab his love handles to keep from flying off. 🤣. It’s one of those things I’ll never forget. Thanks dad.

Absolutely! Not only is there nothing wrong with a stock bike, for me it’s actually preferred!!!! I’ll leave the engineering up to the engineers and the people that spend millions of dollars figuring this stuff out. This is why I buy new motorcycles, because they’re not screwed with by people that have no idea what they’re doing LOL

I still haven't found an engine as involving as the CBR400RR's inline 4 redlining at 14500, but can still pull from 2k. Amazing raspy, bouncy idle exhaust note that builds to a crazy scream, hoots and howls from the airbox and the whine of the cam gears just makes it so engaging. Nothing better on a twisty road.

The main reason most modern bike owners don't tear down their motors to rebuild is because most modern bikes are fairly optimized. Older bikes have lots left in the taps so spending a few hundred bucks could make a big difference. Race teams spend 10's of thousands off doll hairs(and more)only to squeeze 10 or 20 extra herspers out of 1000cc motor that needs rebuild every time you turn it off.

Our dad had a Yamaha XS 400 from the 70's, it had a Inline two cylinder engine. Even though the bike wasn't fast, it had a great sound. As young teenagers, we beat the crap out of that bike, but the engine took the abuse well. The bike basically broke apart around the engine, like a Dodge truck. The engine was almost bullet proof, never left us walking.

Interesting, admittedly not Kevin Cameron level, discussion about motorcycle engines. Two things. First, it was interesting to see the metrics become explicit as the discussion evolved; well done. At least nobody simply pointed at their head and claimed that’s where the metrics resided. Second, while the metrics did become more explicit, aside from sound, looks and seat of the pants impressions, I’m far from clear as to what they are, or aren’t, or should be. That said, I never would have thought of modifiability as an important metric, and now I do. Great discussion, well worth the listen. Stay safe!

Great discussion. I will add one point - many people do not have access to the bike and engine when making a decision about buying one. Case in point - I bought a Ural Gear Up from a dealer in Massachusetts (I live in Utah) sight unseen. My first ride was taking it home from the place it got shipped to (a Ural service center). Needless to say, I bought this out of passion for the bike and then adapted to the bike.

My favorite motor in motorcycles that I’ve personally experience is the BMW k1600 in-line 6 engine that has power everywhere and is still fuel efficient (I get around 50 mpg), practical and smooth. My second favorite is bmw/Honda parallel twin, third is the Vrod/Indian scout modern liquid cooled short stroke vtwin. I also enjoyed my big air cooled vtwins from Harley and Indian but more so from the emotional point rather than a practical one. I would love to try a v4, triple, boxer twin, and L twin engine. The spec sheet for anything will always be important to me as it is the first thing I look at to determine whether I want to bother gathering more information or if I want to see it/experience it in person. If a motorcycle doesn’t have a modern engine with modern features but is asking modern prices it is no longer and option for me.

Oscar Bottazzi I think they are meant to be low center of gravity motors that have good power throughout and are smooth. Amazing engineering. That is what I found with mine, hardly noticed I was riding because it felt more like gliding. That said, I use that bike for touring 2 up, if I want fun I take my 80s 450 parallel and ring out the throttle because it is way more interesting of a ride at half the CCs.

Probably my favorite episode yet. I thought pretty much every point made had good valor. I particularly liked the question concerning modification friendly engines. Spurge makes a great point about getting a bike to ride, but I still find myself more in agreement with Lemmy and Joe. My current project is very similar to what you guys spoke of earlier. It's actually a bit insane, but I love it. It's a 1988 883 year sportster low end, with a buell xb 9 top end conversion. It has Andrew's 500 lift v6 grind cams, Jims roller rockers, Andrew's 4140 chromoly adjustable pushrods, accel 35496 ignition with accel stealth super coils. It has an S&S super E shorty carb, Kuryaken velociraptor breather, and exotic choppers fuelies exhaust. It's got 12:1 compression, and estimated 90 to 100 hp, on a super lightweight pauchgo rigid frame. That's a lot of power considering it's a 4 speed, but that's part of the fun in building these things. All in all, great content. Thanks
@thomasbarnardjr9657
@thomasbarnardjr9657 4 жыл бұрын
Joe, I couldn't agree more. My project kinda happened by accident. I new the xb9 pistons and heads were gonna be an upgrade, but I had no idea of the major compression increase. It's probably only gonna be good for that insane low end torque, but I just love everything about it. This bike has a lot of sentiment for me. It was my first Harley Davidson, and I was almost killed on it shortly after the purchase, when the hitch broke on an oncoming trailer, and I got hit by that trailer. Fortunately for me the guy pulling that trailer was a really good guy, who felt terrible about the accident. We made a deal, and settled the accident right there at the scene, to avoid dealing with insurance, so I could keep the bike. That's why it now sits on a Pauchgo 35° raked rigid frame. The engine blew about 2 years after the accident, and now is in the process of the Buell transition. The bike itself is a classic bobber style, with custom ribbed tank, and ribbed rear fender. I just fabricated the new tank mounts, and I'm getting ready to jump into next few items on the list soon. Like you, I also really love the parallel twin Triumphs from back in the day. I think the old British bikes make absolutely amazing bobbers, which are my favorite style bikes. Of course I still miss my second street bike which was a Kawasaki Zephyr 500. I loved that little bike. I hope you get to do the sporty build for Revzilla. That would be awesome to see. High side Low side has become a sort of an addiction for me.
@thomasbarnardjr9657
@thomasbarnardjr9657 4 жыл бұрын
Joe, man I love watching you guys. And as far as the accident goes, well I landed in the ditch head first, so that was good for me. There's not much up there to hurt after all. But in all seriousness, I wish I had a way to send you some pictures. I just finished mounting the new tank that's going on it, and drilling out 2 sheared bolts on the hub of the rear wheel that's replacing the spoke rear. I had a spoke pop on the front at over 70 mph, so I'm not big fan of spokes. I made a trade with my best friend for a sturgis chrome dish rear rim, and a black 9 spoke mag for the front which will be gloss black with the raw relief cuts lightly polished. I'm not a fan of flat black anymore. Too many people are doing it. All of the wiring is to be rerouted to a small compartment opposite the oil tank, and the battery will be a small sealed battery between the seat post and the rear fender. The bike will have no switches on the bars at all. The throttle assembly will be a slim line push pull, and I'll stick with the small rectangular mirrors it already has. The foot controls are going to be made from the TC bros kit, and it will also have their seat on it as well. The craziest part of this whole thing is that I don't even have a shop to build it in. Everything is being done right outside my door in my front yard. I actually put the engine together the first time to check fitment on my dining room table. My wife wasn't to thrilled about that one though. My best friend did the final engine assembly in his shop. Here's to all the poor boys that find a way to do it, without the nice shops, lifts, and high dollar tools that others have. And here's to everyone who lives on 2 wheels. We're all a brotherhood, and we need to remember that. Thanks for the great content, and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I greatly appreciate all you guys.

Big block 2V Guzzi. Triumph unit 650 with a 750 big bore kit. Evo with a cam and carb. Norton singles, OHV & OHC. BSA A10's with the main brg conversion done. Yamaha 500 single, XT or SR. Vincent v twin. Any air cooled 2T trials 250 ie Yamaha, Bultaco, Montesa et al. Laverda Jota. Note - no water cooled motors mentioned ( bar the original TL1000 v twin and the insane XSR900 triple). I could go on. And on.

This is mostly directed at spurg...I have a 1290 super adventure and I’m thinking about doing the Rottweiler intake. Any input on stage 3 vs stage 4? I have a wings exhaust so I might benefit more from the power commander but keeping budget and simplicity in mind will the fuel dongles work well enough with the exhaust and Rottweiler upgrade?

If anyone wants to see a Honda NR which they mention, the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum has one in Solvang, CA. I've been a few times, worth the visit. They have a ton of classic to modern motorcycles all in the owners private collection. Small entry fee and a great place to take a motorcycle ride. That valley is beautiful wine country.

How about the lowly Suzuki Intruder 1400? A plain looking air cooled V-twin that is actually air cooled up front and oil cooled in the back? Thats my first thought regarding engines that hide their tech.....

Nice discussion. I'm with Spurge: I buy a bike to ride it and not need with the internals of the motor. Result: Reliability. 50K miles on my 1971 CB750K1, 60K miles on my 2002 Connie, 100K miles on my 1994 FLHTCU ElectraGlide. Just change the oil and ride like Spurge!

Okay Revzilla, you have finally done it! With all the new mix of players with differing styles, added formats , you are without a doubt the best source for all the aspects of riding! The only problem is now there’s more of you to hate! Yeah ,yeah; call it envy, jealousy, bike lust, Or whatever! Good news is my fantasy garage now includes a bike that I would match each contributor: HD flathead, 60’s Brit, KTM adv, Versys 650, 600 ss, and a Triple! Keep up the good work

what's really interesting to me about this episode is that you the stuff you guys talked about was totally different from what i was expecting! you missed some of the more interesting points i honestly thought you would touch on: no mention at all of motus' baby block engine, boss hosses, or super vees, nothing on forced induction, engine orientation (transverse vs longitudinal), or rotary engines! something else that i thought you would touch on was that the VFR800 was the first internationally sold motorcycle to ever have VTEC, especially since spurgeon brought it up. it was even the model he personally owned, and he really seems to love to talk about his bikes, so i was like "what gives?"! but i can see how that would be a lot to cram into 40 minutes; i could spend 40 thousand minutes talking about each one of those points individually and still not have nearly enough time to get to everything i would want to say. but anyways, great episode as always!

my top bike engine’s are yamaha rd/rz 500cc 2 stroke v4. the current yamaha triple in the fz09. the cross plane R1 inline 4. and cos i’ve been told to pick one that isn’t a yamaha so i’ll go with the aprilia rsv4 if only for the sound it makes. ps the wild card choice is the 1700 v4 vmax gen 2

Folks tend to talk about the most unique and/or highest performing engines, and I get that. But I think that the engines that deserve even more respect are the ones that are cheap, simple, durabe, impossibly reliable, and very cheap and easy to repair and maintain. With that in mind, I think a couple hero engines would be the V-twin from the Shadow 750, and the original parallel twin from the pre-gen Ninja 250. Only 28HP, but a 14,000 redline, 0-60 in under 6 seconds and it'll happily go 75-80MPH all day long. Plus they're easy to repair and good for 80,000+ miles.

I love the current Moto Guzzi 1200 QuattroValvole engine. Beefy, torquey, shakes my teeth out, performance is spot on. I hated the Hongda CB450 twin, 'cause I got it almost in non working order. It drank more oil than fuel.

25:12 I am 100% with you. Take my 2021 Kawasaki Z 900 RS café. I love the in line four metric bike engines I always have. However it’s a 2021 with modern feel injection and modern emissions. The only thing this bike needs is to fatten up the tune a little bit. It’s a wonderful machine but the fueling absolutely needs to be fattened up a little bit. I get it, I would not do anything with the motorcycle as far as engine work or even exhaust work. I like it the way it is. It just needs a little bit of a tune to get past this BS strict emissions. And I’m OK with that because Kawasaki did what they had to do and I’m so happy that this bike does exist. All I have to do is find someone who can properly tune it to make it the bike that it should be and can be!!!!

Hey guys hope your all safe & doing good. Have a question. Im 27, Been riding for about three years after being off for a while. Rode dirtbikes as a kid. Came back with a grom for the first year, 2nd year got a 06 cbr600rr (subtle i know) sold it because of back and neck problems. Now riding a 03 sporty 1200. Super weird transition but got into these bikes because I dont have friends or family into bikes and these 3 choices were what I was familiar with and had available budget wise. Im 5'9 and 150lb so the sporty is actually comfortable. Just really wish I had an in between of Harleys ease of use and reliability and the cbr's power all though I dont need sportbike crazy speed. What could I transition to that offers me that comfort and performance balance? Ive looked at speed twins and the xsr700 But I havent test riden them and dont really have any dealers that offer test rides here in Puerto Rico. Are any of these good choices for what I want or do you have any suggestion? Sorry for the super long message

Hi everyone. I'm in the process of choosing my first bike, and in the country where I live, small-displacement bikes are very rare so I could really use some advice. Given my limited options, I could get a BMW G310R a KTM Duke 390, or a Pulsar 200, but I don't want a Pulsar, and the BMW G310R or KTM Duke 390 have absolutely zero reselling value here. Financially they are pretty much like disposable bikes. What I want is a commuter with fun potential but also a bike I can trade-in in the future. So I'm thinking of a BMW RnineT Pure as a tempting option. But that 1200 boxer engine is BIG. Do you guys think it would be too much for a first bike? Should I just get the R310R knowing I will have to sell it for nothing when I outgrow it? Sorry for any writing errors, English is not my main language. Thanks, guys. Any advice will be much appreciated.

I own a triumph scrambler 08 with a modified engine from tpusa in California one of the last if not the last before Carlos left there. It’s as spurgeon said big bore now 994cc fcr carbs and much more. I can tell you it’s totally reliable and this engine has tons of character and power. If you don’t ride it you can’t imagine how it rides. Only down side is fuel consumption 🤷🏻‍♂️

Chris Cha yes it is but the same time it’s really fun. I use it as a fun bike not for commuting or any big miles so it’s fine but if I wanted a daily bike I wouldn’t let the fcr on. I guess that’s why they are called racing use only carbs 😂

Really thought you guys were going to talk more great engines in General, Clearly as you can see from my pic.......i LOVE the Boxer 6 1832cc engine that comes in my Valkyrie (and other goldwings) the Goldwing flat boxer going back to the 1st 1000cc Wing, it's a Classic, Also on my list of Classic Motors, the Harley Panhead, the Harley Evo in the V-twin, Also longest running V-twin the Yamaha Virago/Vstar Motor, Other Classics in my day the 2 stroke Kawasaki H2, the Honda 750four that gave birth to almost all the Japanese bikes of today, and the BMW boxer and K motors, y'all skipped over all of these.

I buy the bike by the motor. That is the most expensive to modify vs suspension. I usually just place a slip on muffler and that’s it. V-2’s in Ducati, Ktm... power and Torque. V2 have character vs a smooth V4 or online 4.

I am with Spurgeon. I have a 2018 Indian Chieftain and a 2018 BMW 1600 GTL. Each bike is used for its purpose. There are people that will dump $$$ into an Indian motor to make it more performance oriented. My take is if you want performance buy a performance bike. If you want Americana cruiser buy an HD or an Indian and ride many happy miles.
