I am reading Little women to my daughter every night and we are just obsessed with this book. We visited Louisa's Alcott house in Concord, MA. I got fascinated seeing all her belongings and the place she lived and imagining her and her family living at that lovely city . We learned a lot about Louisa and her work during the visit.

As always, Lucy, it's great to hear from you! I hear that Pages and Co is coming to America in 2019; I'm thrilled to try it when it arrives! I'm also glad that you enjoyed Anne of Green Gables, which is one of my favorites--I highly recommend Montgomery's Jane of Lantern Hill if you can find it (it's very difficult to find anymore). I hope you have a happy new year!

I hate Charlotte Bronte. I will tell you why. The only major work we have from Emily is Wuthering Heights. But that is not the only thing she wrote, or even the longest. She spent a much greater amount of time writing a massive epic fantasy work which probably would have reached multiple volumes. She thought (or so I have read) that it was her greatest. After her death Charlotte burned all of it with the exception of a few poems. I don't see how anyone can forgive that.

I’m currently reading The Flight Of The Falcon by Daphne du Maurier and I’m LOVING it! I had never read any of her books before but picked this one up because a friend recommended it to me. Have you read "The Princess and Curdie" yet? I am taking a seminary now on Victorian Children's Fantasy and we have read: The Water-Babies, At the Back of the North Wind, Christmas Tree Land, The Cuckoo Clock, the above one, The Rose and the Ring, and both Alice books. I can actually recommend the above one and the first two ones, but because you mentioned you read quite a few children's classics, you might be interested in them if you haven't already read them. Wonderful video by the way!

Yes! Villette is fantastic! I'm so glad it made your favorite this year. I think I'd like to reread at least one Bronte book next year. Perhaps I'll choose Villette. I have never actually read The Professor. I've been told that it's simply a less polished version of Villette. I love the Brontes so much though that I really should read it, even if it's not the most exquisite of Charlotte's works. I love Anne of Green Gables too! I read it the year before last year I think for the first time, and I still think about it. I swear I had a beer the other week that tastes like raspberry cordial. I was telling everyone that it was just like in Anne of Green Gables, but not many people appreciated the reference. I've heard so many mixed reviews of The Essex Serpent, but now I really want to pick it up! I've been toying with the idea of going to the library and picking up The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock since it's finally out and in the library in the US! Rebecca is a favorite of mine from last year. I still think about it. I really want to read The Woodlanders. It's even sitting on my shelf. Little Women is an old favorite of mine, and yet I've never read Good Wives. I find it interesting to reread Little Women and find myself identifying with each of the sisters differently than I had in the past. Jo is almost always my favorite, but on my most recent reread I had a new appreciation for Amy and Meg. Apologies for the long paragraph. We have such similar taste that I have something to say about almost everything on this list!

Great list, it's so nice to see a mix between old & new. I also loved Pages & Co, and it made me want to read Anne Of Green Gables too! I listened to The Essex Serpent on audio last year & wasn't that enamoured, but there's a strong possibility that was due to the narrator so I need to read the book. I am from the place where the book is set, so wanted to love it! I read Guernsey a few years ago, and adored the film this year. If you want more war time recommendations, I'd highly recommend Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks, which is one of my favourite books of all time.

Hi Lucy! Gosh you got me with Pages & Co... I think I saw it on Instagram on the account of a bookstore in which the author was signing, but your review convinced me. Ordered! Thank you a lot! By the way, I keep thinking that you Brits do know how to make gorgeous book covers. I was amazed last time I was in London browsing and wandering in bookshops, that made me want to buy them all! ♡ My favourite book of 2018 and most incredible discovery was The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. I got it during this trip in London and devoured it. It opened me to the incredible world of gothic novels, and I bought some of them afterwards, hoping to dive into this genre a little bit more in 2019. I really loved Seven Deaths and I can't recommand it enough. I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and that your New Year will be full of joy and emotions (can't wait for your book to come out!). xo - Myriam

He writes dark humour in very very dark situations. I just finished watching your latest video. You are very ambitious! Shall we, your loyal fans, keep you accountable to read those “scary” classics?! I really want to read more classics to help my mind relax and escape. So, I follow you to hear your reviews of books that then might excite me to read those books. Of course I have seen some of these classics as movies, but I want to read the books. I love Anne of Grreen Gables! We have the movie with Megan Fellows as Anne. My wife and I don’t have children, and there are some scenes that put a lump in my throat. Like the one of Matthew and Anne in the barn after she try’s on the dress with “puffed sleeves.” If she were mine, she could have as many dresses with “puffed sleeves” as she liked! Orphan trope is like the love triangle trope: ban them. Lord of the Flies + Archie comics. Lucy try PEI seasons for a year. Sept.:hot then temperate. Oct.:temperate then decidedly cool. Nov.:too cold to rake leaves. Dec.:Winter, could feature 1.2 metres of snow & up to -40C windchill. Jan.:snowstorms tempered with cloudiness & wind. Feb.:more Jan. March: more snow with some rain (if u r lucky). April: the unkindest month of all...you want it to be Spring but it doesn't come. +2 to 6C & that wind. May: the joys of 6 to 9C. Cool. June: first half more cool. Jokingly called June-uary. 2ed half of June, July & Aug.:hot, 26-29C, & never-ending humidity. If u get something better than what I've described above, u've lucked out. PEI is capable of getting >18 feet of snow in 1 winter. Thank your Gulf Stream that more northerly UK is spared that. Fav book of '18: Silmarillion/Tolkien. WWII if u r interested: The Plague/Camus; Hiroshima/Hersey. If u've seen Chariots of Fire movie u might want to read Shantung Compound/Gilkey [warning: author gets preachy in the last chapter.] For more: The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich/Shirer and The Making of the Atomic Bomb/Rhodes.

I rather like the orphan trope! I keep meaning to make a video discussing fictional orphans. Maybe I should add it back to my list! I think that's why I liked reading *Anne of Green Gables* so much -- PEI is so different to the UK that every setting pops out of the page, yet there are enough similarities that it doesn't feel totally alien. Thank you for the recommendations! I'll take a look!

@@lucythereader Fictional orphans vid? There's more 'n a page of names of fic orphans on wikipedia & it leaves out eg. some of Dickens'. U r spoiled for choice. PEI WAS British colony till 1873. A of GG set c.1900. Only 27 yr gap so some things would be Brit, most assuredly. PEI suffered under a system of absentee landlords & tenant farmers in its history, & its economy suffered from it. UK was settled from prehistoric times whereas permanent year-round settlement didn't occur on PEI til 1720, & Brits didn't live there til the 1780s. Happy New Year to you too! Although I found The Castle of Otranto brilliant, I felt that it was for all the wrong reasons -- I found it more funny than Gothic! I appreciate it, but I tend to save the books I had more of a personal connection to for my end of year favourites. I'll be talking about The Castle of Otranto lots this year, though!

I hate the Essex Serpent. No offence, I there are just a couple of things I liked. The others annoyed me to death.

I wasn’t a fan of Rebecca. The ending was VERY lacklustre and anti-climactic, there was lots of underlying sexism and mistreatment of the main character by Maxim (in my opinion). It was also quite boring overall; I did, however, enjoy the descriptive parts of the book.
