omg, thank you soooo much for linking the Spencerian Compendium! I have the copy books, and a digital version of the original theory book, but I'd never seen this version. It's so helpful! I'm just starting on this, and it's so nice to find people like you doing the good work to help all of us along the way. Please keep it up! I love your videos!

Wow! Great review and a fantastic resource. I just got started with Spencerian and I love the exemplar letters. Most important to me though are the instructions on how to hold and approach the writing - something, come to find out, I have been doing wrong my entire life. Thanks.

Hi Nabeelah, thanks for this video! I found this exactly when I needed it, wanting a reference for capital letter practice. I am on workbook 3 of Spencerian System of Practical Penmanship and loving all of your videos. So well planned, concise, professionally executed and I notice great effort in the final editing. The audio is very good and love your music choices. I am inspired in Florida!

Hi, my penmanship is atrocious. I have depression, anxiety, panic attacks and PTSD. It has affected my writing terrible because of it. I have ordered the Spencerian books and plan to start working on my penmanship soon. I think it will help calm me down. One question I have is when do you use flourishes?

Me too for most of all that. The books and a decent flex dipper will be my February splurge. I can't wait! I have noticed a practice that really helps me right now, even tho I only have Palmer to work on as of yet. It's the "running hand". This forces me to relax my hand and use my arm. If I do it enuf, my body will eventually learn the movement. I hope you are healing. 🖐✍🖋📜☕

If you want to get the 52 degree angle, but don't have or want to get the special notebooks for practicing Spencerian penmanship, do this: On an ordinary quadruled paper, draw a forward slant which is the diagonal of a triangle, the base of which is 7 and the height of which is 9. That would give you an angle of 52.125 degrees and is close enough to practice with. You can draw parallel slants by moving one square to the right both on the bottom and the top of the diagonal. 9:7 is both an accurate and practical.

Hi Nibila ,nice work,I enjoyed watching your spencerian series here. I would like to ask a favour ,can you show in a video how you do the shade on "a" , "p" , "f" , "s" minuscule. Maybe you can explain how you put pressure on nib when you are doing those shades. I ask you because I'm a beginner and would be helpful for me to see how another person which learn this script figure or learned to apply this shade. Thank you !

Thank you so very much for directing me to this book and providing link to it! I'm struggling with Palmer method to which clues I try to poorly find on youtube. By the way, I'm a total beginner and I wonder what is the relation between Palmer and Spencerian method since they look so similar to me...
@margyb7469
@margyb7469 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Palmer is a derivative of Spencerian. I had also started with Palmer and found it lacking, also he focused so much on using the correct hand grip, after a bit of research I have found a big percentage of people don't use it. One of the reasons being that there is no variation on how to hold your hand, wrist etc, because every ones hands and fingers are of different sizes and lengths. The other issue is, that if you are an older person, after many years of writing and using your arms, wrist, fingers, muscles they become pretty molded to how you being using it over the years and that would take years to change.

Hey Kaye! I took an advanced class with Michael Sull in person and he handed out some sheets with his twister capitals exemplars, so I believe that's how some people on IG (including myself) have it. I'm not sure if they're anywhere else?

Not that I'm aware of Colby, unless you manage to acquire a vintage copy (but they're rare and highly coveted!). If you print out the instructional plates in the middle of the book that should suffice as reference; I only have those printed out so I can lay them flat on my workspace, and the text I've just read through.

I'm practicing Spencerian script and here is a video of my daily practice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6ndhXysasydhbM&spfreload=10 I have to rest my wrist very lightly on paper so my 3rd and 4th finger can glide on paper in a controlled fashion. If I don't use my wrist as an anchor, my nib will move too much, but I cannot write a lot of letters in a row with my wrist on paper. Do you rest your wrist on paper? How many letters can you write without lifting the nib?
@TinyOryx
@TinyOryx 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Shaw - thanks for asking. It's so neat how you're filming your daily practice, and so beautifully too! As I mentioned in this video, I don't hold my pen with the grip that many of the Spencerian books prescribe, rather I keep my wrist on the table for more control and usually write quite small, except when I'm doing large capitals that need whole arm movement, in which case both my wrist and elbow are off the table. I've studied with Michael Sull and he also doesn't use the 'proper' grip and keeps his wrist on the table. At the moment I do more penlifts than I'd like to - especially since I do a penlift after each shaded miniscule - you can see a video of my current writing on Instagram: instagram.com/tinyoryx/

I don't think books made in this period assumed someone was right handed. You were made to learn to write with your right hand whether you were left or right handed. Writing with your left hand was considered incorrect. You'd get your hand smacked with a ruler from what my grandmother ( who is left handed) would tell me.
