Standalones usually end up being some of my favorite books, I really wish more fantasy, and retelling type books were standalones. I feel like now everything is a series, and I CAN'T KEEP UP! XD

neverlandbooks You should read 'The Night Circus' It is an absolutely beautifully written fantasy stand alone. I'm not even a huge fan of fantasy, but this was wonderfully, yet maturely whimsical and I adored every word of it.

I agree completely with your thoughts on The Martian. I just filmed a wrap up, and I said a lot of the same things. The humor added so much to the story, and it helped me like Mark Wattney even more. And I also love the Book Thief! The fact that it's narrated by Death gives the book a totally new and different perspective, and makes for an interesting read

My own MOST favorite standalone titles are, oddly, NOT Urban Fantasy, which is mostly what I love to read. *gasp* I know, right?! But I really just LOVE these six stories: 1) Absolutely, Positively by Jayne Ann Krentz. This is romantic suspense title (sort of paranormal, as Harry - male lead - has a psychic ability) by my most favorite author ever. :-) 2-3) Getting Rid of Bradley *and* Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie. These are non-paranormal Romantic Comedies and I just really-really love them. :-) 4-5) A Little Fate *and* A Little Magic by Nora Roberts. Both of these books each have three fantasy-romance short stories in them. ("Winter Rose" in A Little Fate is my FAVORITE!) :-) 6) Ravished by Amanda Quick (also known as Jayne Ann Krentz writing historicals). This is an historical romantic suspense, not paranormal in any way, but I really just love it. Harriet and Gideon are a to-die-for couple. :-) Most of my other reread-a-LOT stand-alone titles are also by Jayne Ann Krentz. Books like Falling Awake *and* All Night Long (contemporaries written as JAK); and Lie by Moonlight (technically book #4 in her Vanza series, but I read it most often as a stand-alone *and* Wait Until Midnight (historicals written as Amanda Quick). :-) Apart from the above-named books, the books I most often read and reread *are* Urban Fantasy series books. I'll go add a reply to my comment on your "favorite series" video to name my own favorite series. :-)

One of my favorite stand alones I actually read in high school, called Girl in Blue. Its a historical fiction by Ann Rinaldi, that is somewhat based on the life of Sarah Emma Edmonds who disguised herself as a man so she could serve in the army during the civil war. Its a fast read, but really good especially for middle grade/teens. ~ C

The one book I always recommend is Made You Up by Francesca Zappia. It came out two years ago, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's the only book I consistently re-read, and is my go to for when I'm in a reading slump. It's about a girl named Alex, who has paranoid schizophrenia. She moves to a new school at the beginning of the book, and there meets a gut who she thought she made up when she was a kid. It takes off from there, and it honest to god, my all time favorite book. Ever. I could talk about it for hours and hours. The writing is excellent, the characters are fantastic, and it just is extremely good.
